INTRODUCTIONCountries around the world are deriving the different sources of Income. One of thefastest growing industry in the world is Travel and tourism. It has been widened to the significantextent due to the movement of people at different places for many purposes such as forrecreational activities, business purpose, education, medical and many others. Countries arecontinuously developing their places to attract visitors from around the globe. UK has been therecognized as the prominent destination due to the plethora of spectacular places, range ofactivities to offer, blending festivals, culture, majestic history and scenic beauty of coastalregions (Abu and et.al, 2012). Present report is prepared to elucidate the travel and tourism inUnited Kingdom and South England. Report throws light on different components of UK traveland tourism sector such as historical developments, structure and impact of government andinternal organisations. Further, it discusses factors affecting demand and supply of tourism inLondon and the environmental, social and economic impact of tourism.TASK 11.1 Historical development of travel and tourism sectorTravel and tourism sector first got flourished in European region with the beginning ofinformal tours and trips. The major transition came in the travel and tourism sector due to thestarting of Grand Tour. It was the first formal tour which has facilitated the elite people of UnitedKingdom to provide holiday tours. Industrial revolution took place in 19th centuary has made themovement of people easier and faster (Bălan, Balaure and Vegheş, 2009). Gradual developmenthas made the recognition of the industry as the prominent one by the time of 20th century with theadvancement of many components such as travel agencies and tour operators such as cox andkings, TUI, Thomas cook and many others. Significant changes have been seen in differentcomponents of travel and tourism sector such as in technology, social conditions, infrastructure,future possibilities, freedom of movement and many others.Freedom of movement: Earlier confined to the movement for the purpose of holy visits, themovement was occurred on foot to the places (Barrett, 2012). Hence, the tour were about 2-3months long and time consuming. But at present the movement has become easy with thedevelopment of transport system and trips became more frequent and faster.

Technology: Technological advancement has made dwindled the boundaries between places andhas made the people closer and connected (Beggs, Ross and Goodwin, 2008). Development incommunication has been the reason of increased networking. Availability of facilities under oneroof and on internet has changed the scenario and working style. Such as customers and visitorsare facilitated to perform all the required functions within the fraction of time like ticket booking,surveying about the places and the related information, seeking financial services, interactingwith service providers and many others.Social conditions: There has been changed seen in the perception of people about travel andtourism. Earlier people's visits were confined to the sacred places which was for religiousreasons but at present purposes of visits increased such as for medical, business, education andrecreation.Infrastructure: Infrastructural development has made the places more attractive and safe. Suchas in UK people from around the world come to see the master piece of infrastructure built in theform of majestic buildings and monuments (Bell and Parker, 2009).Future possibilities: In UK, there are some future growth possibilities which can foster thedevelopment of industry such as better promotion, greater involvement of government andlegislation, imbibing sustainability in the process adopted and making it more environmentfriendly.1.2 Structure of travel and tourism sectorUK being the recognised destination for travellers, travel and tourism sector work in thecomprehensive manner with the inculcation of several components and groups. The majordivision is done as the government, tour operators and travel agencies; transportation andattractions.Government: With the share of significant amount in the GDP(Gross Domestic Product) of thecountry, Government is involved in this sector in the prominent manner. There is the departmentfor culture, media and sports (DCMS) and Ministry of tourism which is responsible to enhancethe productivity and profitability of the sector (Dwyer and Forsyth, 2008). On the basis ofcustomer's demand and present market scenario they frame strategies and policies to attractleisure and business visitors at the place and also secure the hosting of major events.Tour operators and travel agents: the private organisations such as tour operators play vital rolein promoting the place to the people living in different corners of the world.
