PART A.
1. In the short story A & P, the main character Sammy is described by the tone he uses, the
things that he says and how uses them. I have also been able to tell the characteristics of
Sammy with evidence quotes from the short story.
Sammy uses an informal tone so as to enable the readers to connect with him in a
comprehensive manner to acknowledge what his intentions are in the short story and everything
that he believes in. How Sammy expresses himself is of great significance because it brings out
the picture of a teenager and makes the story more interesting by creating a scene.
In response to what Sammy thinks and says in the story, he takes his position and supports
what he believes in without letting anyone to change the aspect of what he believes in. At the end
of the story he walks out of A &P a changed man with lots of rooms for more improvement in
his future life. Sammy refers to the people in the store as “sheep” because he is not able to tell
the difference between them as individuals but views them to be alike in every aspect. Sammy
decides thinks that he responsible for what happens in his life. This is revealed when he quits his
job, he knows very well that his parents will be disappointed in him but he decides to make his
own choices without fearing what his parents will think of him (wheeler 2011).

SURNAME 2
One of the character traits that Sammy portrays in the short story is being sarcastic. His
desires for Queen leads him to do things for the sake of being noticed. He then says aloud that he
wants to quit his job so that he could be overheard but it turns out to be a disappointment because
none of the ladies noticed him. His immaturity is revealed in the way he lusts for the girls and
dismisses the clients of A & P. Sammy also has an observational character that makes him go
beyond limits to garner interest on the individuals that he notices.
2. In characterizing Louise Mallard for the second question, the narrator has two characters
in her that she displays at given instances in the story. First she is an intellectual woman
who seems to comprehend how women are supposed carry out themselves in the society
or even in their marriages. It is ironical how she is overwhelmed with joy when she
receives the news of her spouses’ death. The second character of Louise Mallard is that
she is a dramatic and sensitive woman. This is revealed when her husband dies because
she is happy but later when she realizes that her husband is not dead, she gets heart attack
due to the shock (Cunningham 2009).
3. In answering the third question, Miss Brill is a middle-aged woman. It is revealed that
she is always a lonely woman because of the close observation in daily lives. First is
because she is unmarried and second is how she admires the fantasies of other people’s
lives that she gets to come into contact with. Her nature of observing other people’s lives
earns her the character trait of being an observant woman. Miss Brill is an optimistic
woman in that she is positive and hopeful about the future. She uses her knowledge in
English to tutor so as to earn her a living. She is also sensitive in that she notices the

people around her and after observing the kind of lives they live, she only returns home
sad and lonely (Kimber 2015).
PART B.
RESPONSE TO THE DISCUSSION BOARDS
In response to page 350 of the “Good Country People”, I support the idea that a good
man is very hard to find given that the world has totally changed and people are using
various tricks to achieve what they want. The salesman of the bible pretends be selling
bibles whilst in real sense he uses that means as a way of covering up for his evil
intentions, (Gurney, pg. 350-352). He fools the family of Hopewell and they view him as
a good man. He asks joy to go on a date with him just in order to steal her prostheses for
his personal gains. This should just teach us a lesson that we should not trust strangers
because most of them pretend to be good people which is exactly opposite. We should at
no time judge people for who they are by their appearance, what they sell or carry. The
current world is s corrupt and that makes it hard for people to be able to tell who is good
or not. I strongly support the statement that good people are hard to find and we should
be careful not to trust strangers.
In response to page 196 of A & P, Sammy tries to favor the three ladies because of his
profound interest in them. He wants the ladies to see him as a good man which is a bit of
immaturity on his side. He does not realize that people are different and each girl has
their own way of being attracted to a man. He tries to shout at the top of his voices so that
the girls can be able to notice him but he gets disappointed when none of them even
