TASK 1

1. Explain the role of computer systems in different environments [1.1]

Consider: Banks, Hospitals, Educational Institutions, Departmental stores.

1. Introduction.

Computer is an electronic programmable device which performs mathematical calculation, logical
calculations and many other varieties of tasks. Oxford Advanced Dictionary (A.S. Hornby, 2014;
308) defines Computer as an electronic machine that can store, organize and find information, do
calculations and control other machines. Computer has various features which includes speed,
accuracy, storage, diligence, versatility, automatic, storage, etc. These features have made computer
useful and helpful for humans in various sectors such as Banks, Hospitals, Educational Institutions,
Departmental stores. The roles of computers in these sectors are described briefly below:

1.1 Bank:-

Banks are the financial institutions that facilitate both depositor and loan taker. They also provides
facilities globally for this they need to keep the records of various things, managing the financial
sectors, calculation, information storing and many more. So, Banks cannot run efficiently without the
use of computers. Dr. H.L. Hart (2014) claims that computer in bank is like one of the important
organ in human body. Computer helps to increase productivity, enhance customer service, data
storage, calculation, automating the management of the customer accounts with less involvement of
manpower. Some of the purposes in bank are given below:

1.1.1 Administration:

Computers in banks keep the record of different customers and also provide effective services by
keeping the records of their Name, Address, Phone number, Date of birth and other records. They also
can keep the records of the banks profit or loss, expenditure, income and many more to make a better
planning for the future.

1.1.2 E-banking:

Computer in banks helps to perform various banking task through internet without the use of more
number of manpower. Customers can login their accounts and perform their required transactions
such as paying the bills, loans, transfer cash, cards facilities, ATM services, etc. through their
accounts. People can check their amount deposited current balance, transfer amount, withdraw cash,
etc.

1.1.3 Cards Facilities:

Credit cards and debit cards are being used worldwide now a day. These cards are getting popularity
day by day. People do not need to carry money these cards can be swiped over a machine which is
linked with computers at any shops, hotels and other places and the payment procedure becomes
completed.

1.1.4 Mobile banking:

Mobile networks have become one of the widely used technologies which are now a days even
available in remote places that man takes number of days to reach. This connectivity has made people
much easier to perform their banking transaction easily. They can get notification of their account
details in their own mobile which includes various services such as view their account, pay bills,
recharge their mobile top ups, transfer cash, pay their landline bills, internet bills and many more.

Computers have reduced all the paper works, costing; reduce in manpower, calculation of
interest easily, providing financial status of the organization, etc.

1.2 Hospitals:-

Medical fields have been more accurate, more precise and powerful now a day with the use of
computers. Dr. Amit Verma (2015) claims that computers have made the medical system more
precise and to figure out the disorder in the human body. Medical fields plays a crucial role for the
patients either life or death so, for this a crucial decision is required to be made.

1.2.1 Administration:

Computers in hospitals help to keep the records of the patient Name, age, gender, contact and their
medical reports. This information can help them to know the disease, its stage, vulnerability,
condition of the patients easily. Not only have these computers also helped to keep the records of its
staffs, arrival of the staffs, daily staffs schedule, etc.

1.2.2 Accounting and Billing:

Computer helps to perform their monetary calculation with speed and accuracy. It helps in billing of
patients, pharmaceutical billing, equipment resources consumed, total period of stay of patient,
Medicare taken, etc. Computers have also reduced human efforts and produced accurate results.

1.2.3 Diagnosis:

Regular examination of patient is necessary in hospitals for improvement and to know situation of
patients too. Computers can easily perform these tasks with more precise and accuracy. Computers
can also produce the diagnosis results which doctors can give their judgment as per the result
produced. Various diagnosis such as MRI, CT scan, Ultra sound, ECG, EEG and further more can be
done with the use of computers.

1.2.4 Monitoring Purpose:

Some patients require medical attention 24 hours this might not be possible with the help of human
but it is possible with the help of computers. Computers can also be used to check the glucose
amount, blood pressure, pulse rate and can also produce alarms to alert the patient’s condition.

1.2.5 Research:

More and more research is required to be done in medical sectors. Even small mistakes can bring
dangerous outcomes due to human carelessness. Therefore, frequent test should be done with the help
of various references, information and etc. gathered in a single place, this is possible with help of
computers. Hence, computers have been a boon in medical field.

1.3 Educational Institutions:-

Computers have played an integral role in gaining various knowledge to students in effective way.

People can browse for more and more information in internet through computers. Priti Sinha (2012)
highlights that computer in education has made teaching and learning process much easier and
interesting. Multimedia and e-classes have been widely used now days because children show more
interest and get more idea through them.

1.3.1 Administration:

Educational institutions also require computers to store various information of the students, staffs and
others to run their administration smoothly. Computers help to make magazines, notices, exam
questionnaires, schedules and others. It also helps to make billing system more effective and authentic
by providing printed form of bills. Computers also provide platforms for different faculty members to
store their required data’s and minimize the paper works.

1.3.2 Evaluation:

Different student’s information is necessary to be recorded. Computers help to store the records and
performance of the students. These records can help the teachers to evaluate the students accordingly
and create as per their necessary record details.

1.3.3 Easy Mode of Education:

At present world students do not need to go to schools or colleges to complete their academic
qualifications. The students can make their students accounts which are given by the educational
institution and also view the academic syllabus, give exam and the assignments. The examinations are
also online based so students can stay far from the institutions and gain their degrees.

1.3.4 Library

Education is a vast process, this cannot be limited within a book, a page or a journals. Therefore,
education requires frequent research as it is a dynamic field. Libraries are the only place where vast
information is stored. Students do not need to search any other places for further more information.
Libraries also provide online magazine, journals, e-books, books, etc.

1.4 Departmental stores:-

Computers and other devices help to sort, label, arrange, and calculate the goods. Due to use of
computers for these factors departmental stores has been effective. The workers do not have to go

through the prices of various products. Therefore, workers do not need to put all their efforts to view
every item and calculate them.

1.4.1 Billing and Accounting:

In departmental stores there is always need for fast and accurate record as well as calculations. They
use bar code reader to function under computer and read the items; get the details of the items, etc.
This helps the store to function appropriately.

1.4.2 Keeping Record of Products:

Departmental store requires keeping records of lots of things. This is not easier and possible without
the use of computers. Computer system can keep the record of various products that they have, that
are going to finish, etc. This has helped the store to inspect, keep the records of each and every goods
that they have in adequate, going to be finished, finished in every shelves.

1.4.3 Security

Departmental stores need to make their security system tight as much as possible because there is
more likely to be theft, robbed, damage of products. For this they use CC camera which are attached
to the computers so they can monitor each and every products. They can also use soft tag and hard tag
to create alarm when goods are being carried away without making payment.

1.4.3 Use of Debit or Credit cards:

In present world people rather prefer to carry debit or credit cards than carrying cash. So,
departmental stores should facilitate their customer by the use of cards. The machine that is connected
to computer gives access to the card holder to swipe their card and make their payment.

1.5 Conclusion:-

In nut shell computers have helped a lot of people in different sectors. They have made the human life
easier, faster, more secure, accurate and precise in most of the activities to perform the tasks. Their
performance have reduced the human efforts and helped to get control in administration, monitoring,
security, storing record, research and other various activities.
