Introduction
Canadian art is usually referred to to the visual and plastic arts which have it's
foundation on the geographical area of modern Canada. Concept of art in Canada candy
stressed from several decades from now, since habitation of first Nations people which have
been followed by significant rate of immigration that involved diverse range of artists of
European regions and eventually by artists with legacy from Nations all across the world
(Wells, 2015). The characteristic of Canadian art forms exhibit these diverse origins since
artists have taken the culture as well as familiarised with these influencers in order to exhibit
the realism of their existence in Canada. One of the greatest influential of contemporary
Canadian art is Jeffrey Wall who has gained substantial level of attention for his noteworthy
photographic shots backlit in fluorescent light boxes (Wells, 2015). By questioning prevailing
period of abstract art, Wall eventually developed an interest amongst art lovers with his
alternative conceptual expression. Wall has been renowned for re-introducing narrative as
well as subject matter into the domain of art. The thesis of the essay is "The artistic
characteristic of Wall although focuses on using a camera and recording images, his artistic
practice cannot be claimed as photography.”
Discussion
Recognised as an artist and art historian, Wall has been known for his work which
concurrently illustrates and encounters some of the most prevailing assumptions about arts
well as art making. Since the end of the 1970s, contemporary Canadian artist Jeffrey Wall has
been creating noteworthy photographs which intend to recall the imagery, content of the
subject, construction as well as the presentation methods of pop culture marketing and
cinema along with the celebrated masterpieces of art history (Young, 2018). According to
Wells (2015), from the beginning, Jeff Wall has felt that fine art photography which by the
1960s developed as a major category of small black and white prints which could be revived

with colour as well as scale. Concurrently, the background of conceptual and performance art
has been restating photography as a hint of an action considered as documented.
Comprehensive studies have claimed that these concepts eventually stimulated Wall in
creating art as a new form that is colour transparency in a light box. Such art form had been
combined with unassuming but revelatory proposition which exhibited the modern lifestyles
in Vancouver (Young, 2018).
Wall initiated his artistic profession by advancing his thought regarding ways of
seizing an emotion, appearance, recollection and association in the photograph. All these
aspects have been essential for his artistry nature in order to develop an image of a distinctive
temporal moment or an evidentiary record of an incident which had been recollected or things
which have been remembered by people but have never occurred in reality. Wall’s artistic
approach relates to object which is contrary to concept of photography. Such contradiction is
different to such an extent that viewers often refer to his utilization of camera as anti-
photography. According to Modigliani (2018), although Jeff Wall has made certain
documentary photographs like the Bridge in 1980 and the Diagonal Compositions during the
1990s, majority of the work did not receive any recognition for his photography skills but for
the underlying aspects linked to the images.
According to Jackson (2015) Jeffrey Wall's initial art piece has shared the excellence
and themes with conceptual art and aspects of appropriation art of the 1970s and 1980s. He
has reflected his ideas by exploring the supposed, essential elements of fine art and borrowed
narrative as well as visual insights from the external realm of the established art world. As
per the studies of Michaels (2015), Wall in his wall-sized and with photographs have
incorporated contradictory ideas in the same image along with confronting viewers with
queries regarding the fabrication and truthfulness, spontaneity and artistic development.
Major proportion of his subject content has been derived from the movements which have
