2CONCEPTS THAT AFFECT THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
Introduction.
Communication is the natural human process described as ‘the imparting or
exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium’(Oxford
Dictionary,2012). Communication can be facilitated or hindered by various concepts.
Depending on their use, these concepts can either ease or worsen communication.
Below is a conversation of an observed communication event detailing two
communication concepts.
Kelly and Agatha share an apartment downtown. Kelly walks to the fridge to get her
juice when she discovers Agatha drank it already.
Kelly : (shaking her head in disbelief) Not again Agatha! Did you drink my juice?
Agatha : (Rolling her eyes) I’ll get you a box when I go to the store.
Kelly : (tapping her empty glass) I want it now though!
Agatha : (motioning with her hand) It was this little...
Kelly : (lifting her hand)We need to re-discuss our boundary talk. You're being
unfair. (her phone rings)
Agatha : (Lifting her hands in defeat) You won't even let me explain myself.
Whatever!
Kelly: You do not need a label to know what is yours, Agatha!

3CONCEPTS THAT AFFECT THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
From this event, we can dissect the concept of non-verbal communication - kinesics
(WITSEL, M. 2014) and Listening (West, Richard L.; Turner, Lynn H, 2015,11) and
their impact on the communication process.
Non-verbal communication.
Non-verbal communication can be described as communication without words
(DeVito, Joseph A., 2014, 139). Non verbal cues are used to either
emphasize ,contradict, substitute or complement a message (Afifi, 2007; Burgoon &
Bacue,2003; Burgoon & Hoobler, 2002). Examples of non-verbal cues include;
Kinesics such as emblems which are used to substitute the message, illustrators
physically complement the verbal message, affect displays are used to bring out
emotions, regulators can control what the other party is saying while adapters are
unintentional movements during communication.
From our event above, we could see Kelly starts by shaking her head as soon as she
opens the fridge. The act of shaking her head is an internationally acknowledged
emblem that means no, a cue one could understand even without her vocally saying it.
Agatha, on the other hand, rolls her eyes, this can be interpreted as an affect display as
she tries to show her emotions probably of how ‘bored' or unhappy she is for being
confronted. Through Kelly's tapping of glass, it is quite clear that she is uneasy or she
possesses a negative emotion during this conversation hence the unintentional
tapping. When Agatha motions with her hand, she tries to illustrate the amount of
juice left hence emphasizing on her message on how little the juice was. By lifting her
hand, Kelly tries to control the conversation by asking Agatha (who is trying to
explain herself) to stop. The conversation was drawn to an end by Kelly's act on
raising her hand.
