Question 1
The answer to this question is based on the book “The Conflict Resolution Toolbox:
Models and Maps for Analyzing, Diagnosing and Resolving Conflict” by Gary Furlong.
Disputes cannot be resolved by any magical formula. First of all, the conflict situations are so
diverse in nature and secondly, the models do not exclusively represent the truth, so one single
model would not be enough in order to make sense of world’s every conflict. The conflicts need
to be diagnosed through a vast range of models in a circumstance that is vastly different and with
many different peoples. There are eight models laid down in the book in order to diagnose and
intervene the conflict situations, which are, the conflict circle; the satisfaction triangle; the model
of boundary; the model of interest/power/rights; the trust dynamics; the model of dimension; the
model of social style; the conflict of moving beyond. In words of Bernard Mayer, the models are
considered essential for practitioners. The conflict understanding framework is the organizing
lens which helps in focusing to the conflict better. There are several lenses which will help in
looking at a conflict, such as, communication lens, interest lens; structural lens; personality lens;
dynamic conflict lens (Mayer, 2010). Thus, it can be concluded that every conflict can never be
resolved by using the same model every time.

circle of conflict attempts in categorizing the causes underlying or the driver of conflict situation
which is faced by the practitioner; offers the diagnosis framework and the factor understanding
