1CONFLICT RESOLUTION/MEDIATION
Part 1
Introduction
As the Irish playwright and literary figure George Bernard Shaw has rightly stated,
“No Conflict, No Drama”. A dramatic outburst or event as and when it occurs, is one that is
always rooted in deep-seated conflict. Soap operas on television are always quite dramatic in
nature with drama arising out of the conflict that exists between or among leading characters
(Singer, 2018). This assignment analyses conflict resolution as witnessed in the American
ABC soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful. The assignment outlines the cause of the
conflict, the type of the conflict that is involved and the progressive stages of escalation.
1. Cause of the Conflict
The Bold and the Beautiful is a soap opera that is centered round the Forrester
Family, which runs Forrester Creations, a leading international fashion house based in the
city of Los Angeles. Conflict arose recently in one of the episodes of The Bold and the
Beautiful between protagonist Ridge Forrester and his wife Brooke Logan. This was when
the former chose his biological daughter’s campaign promoting a new brand of inner
garments known as “Intimates” to be launched internationally, while the campaign designed
by Hope Logan who is Brooke’s daughter and which promotes affordably priced garments
for middle income persons, known as “Hope for the Future”, was relegated to the back
burner.
2. Type of Conflict Involved
The type of conflict involved in this particular episode is familial in nature. Brooke
and Ridge are at conflict with each other because of the fact that Ridge has chosen to promote
his own daughter’s fashion line instead of the line designed and conceived by Hope Logan,
who is his step-daughter. Brooke believes deeply in her own daughter’s abilities to be a
successful designer and is crushed by the decision that is taken by Ridge to cancel funding for
Hope for the Future and to promote Intimates. While Ridge believes that he is doing right
by his daughter, by supporting her desires and her wishes, Brooke feels that she and her
daughter are being neglected by Ridge and are being treated shabbily at best.
