INTRODUCTION
Project management is the basis on which construction project is founded. It is the
responsibility of construction manager to have variety of skills so that project can be
successful. To make the construction successful, it requires effective management which
includes planning, organising, directing and controlling. To better understand this concept
Thomas Sinden Ltd has been chosen which is a construction company and established in
London. In this project, there are following topics are covered such as: demonstrate the scope
and linkage between all parties within a construction organisation, different types of
constructions companies within the market & their relationship with the tendering process
and the key stages in a constructions project & how building information modelling informs
the different stages. Apart from this it also discuss about how the construction industry has
developed suitable collaboration strategies in support of greater recognition of health &
safety.
TASK 1
(a) Explain how the construction industry has developed
Construction industry has been developed over a period of time and the construction
is continuous to develop because innovative technologies coming into play in the industry
which involves crusher machinery that is beneficial to keep in line with green construction
practices. As the UK is developed country so that the demand of construction practices are
huge and construction industry has contributes around 90 billion GBP to the nation and more
than 2.9 million people are employed in this field. As the largest construction project has
been made in United Kingdom which is known as Crossrail. As industries, factories, hotels,
corrporations are increasing continuously so that construction industries has developed.
Thomas Sinden Ltd is dealing in different construction projects such as: projects related to
public & private organisations, local authorities, commercial and household buildings,
schools, colleges & charitable trust. It encompassed professionalism within its structures so
that demands of clients can be fulfil (Phua, 2013).
(b) Demonstrate the scope and linkage between all parties
A construction organisation have to link with the different parties in order to
successfully conduct the requirements of project. A construction contract is generally

concluded among contractor & the client. As Thomas Sinden Ltd is always emphasis to fulfil
the demands of its clients so in future it gets more projects. The parties involved in a
construction project are: owner, the person who procuring the work or it is known as
developer. The constructor is the person who is engaged by the owner to carry out &
complete the works. This contractor will usually, in turn, engage sub- contractor to carry out
& complete separate parts of the works. The design of building is suggested by the
contractor. The other party is designer or architect who makes the blue print of construction
project and provide specification for the implementation of the development. The company
will make the construction project for 20 industrial buildings, factories manufacturing baby
foods, soaps, perfumes (Meng, 2012).
(c) Identify different types of contractual work tendered by contractors
A tender is a submission made by a prospective supplier in response to an invitation
to tender. There are different types of contractual work tendered by contractors such as: open
tendering which allows anyone to submit a tender to supply the goods or services which are
required. Suppliers are allow to submit the tender by invitation in selective tendering. Where
as in negotiating tendering a single supplier is suitable for highly specialist contracts and it is
helpful to reduce the tendering cost. In serial tendering the preparation of tenders based on
schedule of work. As per the scenario, selective tendering is suitable for this type of tender
and Thomas Sinden Ltd can effectively fulfil the requirement of tender.
(d) Analyse how the construction industry has developed overall in terms of company
structures, its employees and contracted work
The structure of company has developed as per the requirement and suitability. As the
current structure of Thomas Sinden Ltd , the chain of command is horizontal so that work can
be perform as per the requirement of organisation. Due to the absence of proper information
and guidance the employees are not able to perform according to the expectations which can
hamper the productivity also. As a result contracted work cannot be completed as per the
specification. So it is important for the company to develop a appropriate structure so
effective relationship can be develop between management, employees and contracted work.
It is helpful for the corporation to satisfy the desires of clients.

To develop a structure is important so that work can be done effectively. In the
structure of company three persons are most important which are employees, contracted work

and client. To develop a healthy structure it is necessary for Thomas Sinden Ltd to develop a
healthy working environment in which staffs can perform their roles and duties effectively
and it is fulfil the needs of contracted work and clients because construction project can be
develop as per the specific requirement. It has great impact because it is helpful to create
effective relationship with all the parties who engage in the construction work and
management can be improve (Lixin and Changming, 2012).

of different types. Suggest the type of Construction Company for the given scenario and
justify its suitability
There are different types of construction companies in the market which have key
features of different types such as: small renovation contractors and the features is, it
performs home alterations or small commercial & office work. General contractors are those
who experts in new buildings or alteration work. Whereas owner-builder constructor
companies are those who builds buildings only for its own ownership and sell the buildings
completely or either for rent perspective. Professional construction companies are those who
perform the functions required in building a project as a owner or agent. The construction
company for the given scenario is professional construction company because it have to
complete to complete the construction project of 20 industrial buildings and factories
manufacturing baby foods, soaps, perfumes amongst several other commodities.
(b) Explain the relationship that may exist between the companies working on the
construction project.
There are various companies who is doing the construction project and earning the
good profit and emphasis to capture high market share so that it can survive in the market for
a long time. As Thomas Sinden Ltd is always focuses to build healthy relationship with
corporations who working on the construction project. It trust the companies who provide
raw material and other ancillary things which are helpful to complete the project within
stipulated time frame. Organisation make payment time to time as per the contract so that
chances of conflicts can be resolve. It make healthy relationship with those companies who
provide contract workers so that work can be done effectively.

For a construction company it is necessary to create link so that it can get more

that work can be done effectively. The designs are unique and innovative which attract the
people. As an example, buildings are made on 3D printing and smart buildings are developed
by the constructions companies in which building operations including heating, air
conditioning, heating, security, lighting & other systems are controlled automatically. As per
the scenario it is important for Thomas Sinden Ltd to use innovation and creativity while

developing 20 industrial buildings and factories so that sustainability can develop and it can
capture more market share.
(b) Explain contract planning techniques used within micro and macro projects
In macro projects contract planning techniques are based on priorities & schedule for
the tasks require to complete the operations goals. In this planning technique projects can be
organised in different ways such as: sequential, parallel and staggered. Whereas micro
planning technique is based on the single task which is needed to be accomplish and there are
more chances that project is qualitative as well as cost effective. For the chosen scenario most
suitable contract technique is macro project planning technique because company have to
make twenty industrial buildings and factories manufacturing baby foods, soaps, perfumes
amongst several other commodities. So for Thomas Sinden Ltd macro projects are helpful

check and if any improvement is needed than it can be done. In the current scenario it will be
benefited because construction project will be innovative with unique design so that blue can
be prepare which has to show the client that after the completion project will look like this.
So it is very beneficial in the current scenario.

process
Health and safety is becoming an integrated part of the construction process because it
is not easy for a company to successfully complete the construction project. There are
hundreds of workers are engaged in the work and they use heavy machinery and other tools.
If they are not use properly than health can be affected. So it is important for the organisation
to take care of safety of its employees. Thomas Sinden Ltd is always emphasis towards the
health & safety of its employees and provide healthy working environment with safety tools
so that their health and safety does not get affected. As a result productivity does not get
hamper (Chen and Luo, 2014).
(b) Describe the government legislation which has benchmarked health & safety within
construction
To protect the health and safety of workers government has introduced legislations. In
United Kingdom there is a legislation which is known as Health and Safety at Work Act
1974. As per this act it is the responsibility of employer to protect the health of its employees.
As Thomas Sinden Ltd has follow the legislation of government in order to take care of
health & safety of its workers. According to the scenario it is important to take safety
measures while developing the twenty buildings and factories so that an employees does not
get injure and work can be completed within stipulated time frame as per the need of client.

The role of collaboration and communication in ensuring safe working practices are
very helpful. It is the responsibility of employer to make collaboration with the employees
and communicate relevant information that how they have to use the machinery and other
equipments so that their health does not get affected. Thomas Sinden Ltd is always focuses to
provide healthy and safe working environment so that workers can work safely. As per the
current scenario factory buildings are made of both steel, concrete and other materials so it the
duty of owner to provide appropriate information that how workers have to perform in order to
successfully complete the construction project.

because it have to follow all the norms and regulations which are associated with health and
safety law. As company have to provide health working environment to the workers so that
they can work effectively as a result they can perform the task as per the requirement. With
the help of proper safety measures and tools, accidents at work place has been reduce so that
employees does not get injure and continue its work. As Thomas Sinden Ltd has also
benefitted because it follow all health and safety legislation so that work can be done as per
the requirement.

advantages or weaknesses within construction
The health and safety legislation has impact the construction industry and it is the
advantage for it. By following the laws and regulations related to health and safety, now
companies does not much worry about the contingencies which are arises at workplace. If
any contingency has arise than insurance is helpful and the amount can be spent for the
wellness of workers if they meet any accident while doing the work. As companies take care
about the health of employees and provide safety equipments so that chances of injury can be
minimize. For Thomas Sinden Ltd it is advantage because it follow the legislation related to
health and safety (AlSehaimi and Tzortzopoulos, 2012).

As from the above project, it has been concluded that construction practice and
management plays an important role for the construction companies. There are different
parties are involve and it necessary to build effective structure which support the growth of
business. It is needed to create links with constructions companies. In tenders it is require to
put an effective bid. Construction has developed in terms of innovation, designs, and within
contracts for micro and macro projects. Health & safety legislations are needed to be follow in
construction projects.
