persons, who deserve my deepest gratitude. As the completion of this assignment gave me
much pleasure, I would like to show my gratitude ENG A.A. Dilsath, Lecturer, on British
Council of Applied Studies for giving me a good guideline for assignment throughout numerous
consultations. I would also like to expand my gratitude to all those who have directly and
indirectly guided me in writing this assignment.
In addition, a thank you to Mrs. R. Tharshiha, Lecturer (BCAS), Coordinator of this Course.
Many people, especially my classmates have made valuable comment suggestions on my
assignment which gave me an inspiration to improve the quality of the assignment.

Introduction
This assignment is the mandatory requirement to successfully complete the unit 02 module:
Construction Technology which is part of BTEC HND in Quantity Surveying. This is first
semester Module, and which includes to Construction of substructure, superstructure,
infrastructure and building service. To access the knowledge on the subject module, this
assignment given to cover four learning outcomes.
In the first learning out come we were required to review the terminology used in construction
technology, in second learning outcome we discussed the different techniques used to
contract a range of substructure and superstructure and their function and design criteria. In
third outcome we discussed different types of civil engineering used in support of buildings.
And last outcome is supply and distribution of a range of building and building services.

1 Explain the terminology used in construction Technology
1.1 differences between residential, commercial, and industrial buildings
Residential building
Residential housing construction is the first type of construction and it entails the construction,
repair and remodeling of structures for the purpose of housing people, suppliers or equipment.
Apartments, townhomes, condos, nursing homes and dormitories are all included. Garages
and outbuildings such as utility sheds, are also considered, as previously stated, also entails
the repair and installation of utilities such as water and electricity throughout structure.
Engineers and architects typically design residential housing projects with construction
companies hiring subcontractors to complete the mechanical, structural and electrical work.
Builders typically handle all phases of construction, including design and construction, for
single family homes.
Commercial buildings
Schools, sports arenas, shopping centers, hospitals, stadiums, retail stores and skyscrapers
are all examples of this type of construction. Like residential housing construction, entails the
construction of new structures as well as the repair and maintenance of existing structures. A
company or a private owner usually commissions a project like a retail store. Other
infrastructure projects such as stadiums, schools and medical facilities are frequently funded
and managed by both the local and national government.
Industrial buildings
The third type of construction is specialized industrial construction which entails erecting
structures that necessitate a high level of specialization as well as technical planning,
construction and design skills. Typically for profit or industrial corporations are responsible for
this type of construction. A chemical industry, for example can construct oil refineries while a
power generation industry can construct nuclear power plants and hydroelectric power plants,
both of which are specialized industrial structures.

1.2 The functional characteristic and design selection criteria are informed by
proposal building used.
A good building’s design and performance should meet the following basic functional
requirements,
• The building’s structural system should be solid and reliable.
• Its should be stiff enough that deterioration does not impair the structure’s ability to
perform its intended function.
• In terms of performance the building should be well planned in order to provide comfort
and convenience to the building’s occupants.
A building’s design and construction must meet the following requirements in order tomeet
three important fundamental requirements listed above
1.Comfort and convenience
2.Durability
3.Heat or thermal insulation
4.Moisture or damp prevention
5.Security against burglary
6.Sound insulation
7.Strength and stability
8.Dimensional stability
9.Economy
10.Fire protection
11.Light and ventilation
1.3 Apply theterminology used inconstruction technologyto a given
buildingconstruction project
1.3.1 Objective the building
he primary objectives of a building code are to make sure that new construction and renovated
buildings provide a minimum level of safety, health, and welfare to the occupants and the
public. These objectives are addressed in the codes by imposing minimum requirements that
the designer has to satisfy or even exceed these minimums.

Building codes are only interested in issues associated by the performance of buildings. In
other words, aspects such as building aesthetics, color, etc.. are outside the scope of the
codes.
More Specifically, a building code aims at achieving the following purposes:
• Life safety
• Structural safety
• Fire safety
.
1.3.2 Health and safety
Health and Safety is a term that generally covers the legal requirements that fall under the
Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974. The term Health and Safety is generally used to
describe Occupational Health and Safety, and relates to the prevention of accidents and ill
health to employees and those who may be affected by their work. The standard dictionary
definition for Health and Safety is:‘regulations and procedures intended to prevent accident or
injury in workplaces or public environments.’The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 is a
piece of statutory legislation that came into being following the Robens Report*. It is from this
piece of legislation that the term came into more popular use. Prior to the Health and Safety
at Work Act, which is 40 years old in 2014, occupational safety was covered under the
Factories Act 1961 and the Office, Shops and Railways Premises Act 1963. These pieces of
legislation have been largely replaced and repealed over time by the HASAW and subsequent
legislation.Employers and employees both have responsibilities under the Health and Safety
at Work etc. Act 1974 and other pieces of Health and Safety legislation that that have been
made under it.If you would like further information on Health and Safety and your
responsibilities under Health and Safety law, please contact us to discuss with one of our
qualified and registered Health and Safety Consultants
1.3.3 Construction lifecycle
An in-depth review of the construction life cycle examines the 5 stages of a project: initiation,
planning, implementation, performance and monitoring, and closing.
INITIATION
If you are a project manager and aren’t sure where to begin, start by evaluating the work ahead
and conduct a feasibility test. A feasibility test examines whether the proposed solutions align
with the main objectives. Is the project worth undertaking? From a broad perspective, define
the project and write down possible solutions to specific needs.
