Explain the ideologies behind modernism and postmodernism through a discussion on two
artists’ work, one of whom you would categorize as a modernist and the other as a
postmodernist.
Modernism, Post Modernism and Meta modernism are the three
unremitting literary movements. Architecture presents a visual concept of
the ideas. Therefore, architecture ha a major role in every individuals for its
advantages and efficiency. Modernism is considered as an “enlightenment”
in English. The development of modern art is completely based on the form
and shape. This art is combined with the formalism, alienation and anti
familiarism1. The modern society excluded the mythological and traditional
factors from the knowledge domain. These factors are excluded through
depending on the intellectual logic, human resource and the social
recognitions. The main features of modern art are self-stability,
independence and unity. Unity is considered as linking the discontinuous
factors and integrating them together. Self – stability and Independence are
referred to the self-awareness in the modern society2. A modernist
movement is described as the list of cultural practices and the set of related
cultural movements raised from far reaching and wide scale Western society.
This movement was seen in late 19th century and early 20th century3. The
major components of modernism are the modern character, practice and
thought. Many modern artists described modernism as the revolt among the
traditional standards of realism. In their argument, it was presented that
modern is the paradigmatic move to reject the old tradition form the society.
Modernism excluded the lingering faith of Enlightenment think as well as
omitted the presence of God4.

Europe was graded as the land of revolutions and war in the initial half
of 19th century. In this phase, the romanticism was seen as the revolt against
various values of Industrial Revolution which put emphasis on the individual
subjective experience, supremacy of Nature, individual liberty and sublime.
In the middle century, ideas romanticism is assisted with various governing
standards5. This was exemplified by Otto Von Bismarck’s
Realpolitik. The
cultural critics and various historians structure the list of the doctrines
realism. The modernist landmarks comprise of atonal ending of the Arnold
Schoenberg's Second String Quartet in the year of 1908. The span between
1900 and 1910 had multiple modernism artist who explored their art in vast
manner. The artists including
Wassily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso, Henri
Matisse, Georges Braque and so on.
In the ancient era, modernist presented their art elaborately where
they always tried to present innovative forms of art, utilize new materials in
their art, used color in an expressive manner and so on. All these features
allowed them to attract the people of their society. Various art forms were
used by them like kinetic art, land art, performance art, animation art and
collage art. The modernists fixed their arts in their canvas like newspaper
and so on. They used multiple techniques to showcase their skills.
Chromolithography was developed in this period by
Jules Cheret. In late
1960, modernism was overshadowed by contemporary art when the mass
pop culture coincided with the anti – authoritarian challenges. The year 1968
was remarkable for the modernists as this year witnessed multiple social
reforms like shooting of Martin Luther King, street demonstration all over the
Europe and Tet offensive6. All these overshadowed the modernism factor at
that time and gave rise to the contemporary art. The popular movement of
