Continuous Professional Development
By definition patients’ safety refers to the process of optimizing patient’s outcomes
through best practices that reduce and mitigate unsafe acts within the healthcare system
(World Health organization, 2019). Continuous professional development, especially of
nurses, will ensure patient’s safety by first, improving the competency of nurses. This is so
because, through professional development, nurses will be equipped with skills of providing
patient-centered care. For example, nurses will be informed on how to involve patients in
care delivery. This will make nurses competent since it will enable them to provide care that
improves patient’s outcomes. Also, continuous professional development ensures patients
safety by improving the decision making of healthcare professionals. From the definition of
patient safety above its evident that it entails avoidance of errors in the care delivery. For
nurses to be able to avoid errors in the process of care delivery, they have to make sound
decisions about the health of the patients. Through continuous professional development,
nurses will be equipped with sound decision-making skills that are necessary for patient
safety.
One of the main principles of patient safety provides that healthcare systems should
focus on preventing medical errors rather than creating “goof-proof” individual providers.
Medical errors are the main threat to the patient’s safety (Singapore Nursing Board,
2018). That is why this is principle prioritizes the prevention of medical errors by putting
necessary measures in place in the healthcare system since by doing that, patient safety will
be guaranteed. Another patient’s safety principle emphasizes the need for communication in
the healthcare system to be improved. Effective communication between healthcare
professionals and patients is very key to the safety of patients. This is so because, through
effective communication, the healthcare providers will be able to understand the needs of the
patients and what medications will respond to those needs.
