This report examines corporate regulation and looks at the merits and demerits of regulating accounting and financial reporting. It examines the role of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) and the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) and the exemption of member countries from being tied down by the standards. The report also examines the fluctuations of the elements of equity of four companies found that are publicly traded in the Australian Stock Exchange retailing segment, namely, include Bapcor Limited, Harvey Norman Holdings Limited, Nick Scali Limited, and The Pas Group Limited. A comparative analysis of the debt-equity position of the firms is also examined.
