CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Overview of the research
Corporate strategy introduces as a hierarchically highest strategic plan of an enterprise,
which defines the international goals and ways of their accomplishing within strategic
management. (Badal and Harter, 2014). In simple word, corporate strategy refers as a long term
strategy which shows the direction which an organisation intents to proceeds. In terms of
marketing, this strategy would consist long term branding of an enterprise. It would consist the
number of resource allocation for each product in the marketing mix. Therefore, the overall
direction and scope of an organisation and the way in which its different operations work with
each other to accomplish particular goals and objectives, is called corporate strategy. Along with
this, workforce diversity means differences and similarities among workers in terms of cultural
background, age, physical disabilities and abilities, religion, gender, race and sexual orientation.
Workplace diversity is vital for workers because it manifests itself in making a strong reputation
for the organisation, leading to enhanced opportunities and probability for employees. Along
with this, ASDA is a chosen organisation for this project because they face such type of issue in
their workplace. It is a British supermarket retailer in Leeds, West Yorkshire and founded by
Peter and Fred Asquith in 1949.
Background of the study
For this report, ASDA is a chosen British supermarket organisation in Leeds, West
Yorkshire. Company mainly specialise in selling of Grocery, general merchandise and financial
services. For this research, corporate Strategy and workforce diversity is one of the main issues
that impact on organisation by reducing its high labour turnover. In order to reduce workforce
diversity, company should used different analytical techniques such as SWOT, PESTLE and
VRIO. All these are essential methods applied by an organisation to overcome impact of
workforce diversity on reducing high labour turnover of company that reduce high labour
turnover of an enterprise.

Purpose of the study
Main purpose of this study is to explore the main issue of workforce diversity in an
organisation. ASDA is facing a mass legal action by women employees who work in their stores.
In this women claim that an organisation not paid same salary as compare to male workers.
Therefore, in order to overcome such issues, ASDA should follow analytical tools which will
help them in retaining workers for long time. Apart from this, with the help of research,
researcher can easily identify opinion of employees about business (Boehm, Kunze and Bruch,
2014).
Rationale of the research:
Main reason behind selecting this topic or research is to analysis impact of Corporate
Strategy and workforce diversity on reducing high labour turnover of ASDA. Corporate Strategy
and workforce diversity is a main issue in this organisation that highly impact on its performance
and profitability. Workforce diversity is highly impact on reducing high labour turnover of a
company. Thus, it is a major issue that effect on profitability and productivity of an organisation.
With the help of research, company can easily know different strategies for reducing staff
turnover issues easily.
Issue Of Corporate strategy and workforce diversity Is Important
Workforce diversity is biggest issue of corporate strategy faced by ASDA at their
workplace. Corporate strategy is important because it reflect the company's values and also help
them in retaining employees for long duration. (Croucher and et. al., 2012). It has been
emphasized in recent time period because it has been described in different companies
worldwide, the corporate strategy mechanism at times have failed to adequately control and
monitor top-level managers' decisions. Apart from this, workforce diversity is essential within
the company as well as outside. Corporate strategy has different benefits which will help an
organisation to retain employees for long time and achieve better results within given time
duration. It will support an organisation by providing clarity for execution, makes decision
making simpler and allows concentration of resources in the field that will be more supportive.

Conceptual framework of report
This framework mainly related with entire detail of report. In this framework, detail of
each chapter is clarity define, which will help an investigator to do each activities in
appropriative and systematic manner. All chapter with accurate details are determine as under:
Chapter 1: Introduction: It introduces as a first chapter which includes of entire detail
about the topic. In this part, background and overview of research, aims and objectives and
questions of research, rationale and importance of study are included. All these are major
elements which will assist a researcher to do each activities of study in more appropriate and
systematic manner.
Chapter 2: Literature review: It is another important chapter which has different purpose
such as; identification of gaps and conflicts in previous study, addressing all objectives and
questions of study in more accurate manner (Croucher and et. al., 2012). Thus, in this chapter,
opinion of writers or authors about the study is much more important.
Chapter 3: Methodology: In this chapter, different methods and approaches for collecting
accurate information about the topic will be included. Research strategy, research approach,

research instrument, data analysis, data sources and so on . All these are identify one of the best
methods which will support a research to gather proper and in-depth information about the study.
Chapter 4: Results of research: In this chapter, results are based on primary and
secondary research which will help an investigator to gather better outputs for the study. In case
of primary research, results will be obtain through questionnaire whereas for collecting outputs
on the basis of secondary research, literature review is consider best method.
Chapter 5: Recommendation and action plan: In this chapter, some recommendation are
provided to an organisation about how to overcome issues related to workforce diversity and
corporate strategies. Apart from this, action plan is also best way for an organisation to make
different stages and reduce high turnover of employees (Flick, 2015).

A literature review is introduce as a comprehensive summary or detail of previous
research on a specific topic. It includes books, scholarly articles and many other sources related
to a specific field of study (Kwon and Rupp, 2013). In this section, all objectives and questions
of research are address systematically which are determine as under:
Concept of corporate strategy, especially workforce diversity
According to the Vicki A. Benge, 2017, corporate strategy refers a wide plan of company
to select and create specific markets in which to compete while enhancing different unites and
division of an organisation. Corporate strategy of an organisation entails a clearly outlined, long
term vision that a company set, seeking to develop corporate vale and encourage the employees
to implement the accurate actions to accomplish customer satisfaction. In simple word, corporate
strategy is a continue or effective process that needs the continual effort to engage all investors in
trusting the business with their money, thereby maximising the organisation's equity. Therefore,
Corporate Strategy makes on upper of business strategy, which is mainly related with the
strategic decision making for a single business.
According to the Boehm, Kunze and Bruch, (2014) The term diversification or diversity
is way beyond gender, race, ethnicity, colour, sex, sexual orientation. Diverse workplace means
any organization where the employees are composed with distinct characteristics, but they are
not limited to religion, sex colour, gender,background and geographical location. Workplace
diversity is done or studied for creating an environment that accepts individual's differences,
uplift their strengths and weaknesses to provide them opportunity to fulfil their potential. There
are different types of workplace diversities like in terms of gender in which every organization
has both male and female employees working. The diversity occurs when the time comes for the
payment. A huge gap can be seen in the organization on the basis of their pay. Same shifts , same
timings, same work , same environment etc. but then also women are paid less as compared to
male staff in the organization. To be a successful organization in the market they need to look at
the obstacles faced by both the genders and how they can be alleviated.
In terms of religion: In the diverse workplace the company or the organization should be
aware about the biases practices held while conducting hiring or selection of employees.
Allowing the employees to carry their prayers or observe religious holiday can also help to create

a diverse environment. Employees should be allowed to wear their religious symbol like
necklace, hijab etc. shows acceptance for diversity.
Impact of workforce diversity on reducing high labour turnover of ASDA
According to the Aanya Rose, (2018), workplace discrimination is identify as a type of
diversity and biggest issue of corporate strategy. ASDA faces mass legal action over equal pay
for women, it is a largest problem in organisation that highly impact on its productivity and
performance of company in negative manner. It is also influence of business reputation and
image of ASDA in market. ASDA has three type of corporate strategies such as stability, growth
and renewal. All these are main corporate strategies which is highly impacted by high turnover
of employees.
According to the Kimberlee Leonard, 2019, workforce diversity is more essential and
important for an organisation to enhance their productivity and profitability by retaining long
lasting relation with employees. In order to develop growth strategy of an organisation, there are
different advantages of workforce diversity in which some are determine as under:
Innovative ideas for improvement: Each and every organisation requires to be
perpetually looking at procedures, process and products to determine effective ways of doing
day-to-day activities, processes and fulfilment procedures. Along with this, most innovation
comes from brainstorming and feedback. When an organisation have workplace diversity, they
have employees who look at effective things from various viewpoints. In ASDA, innovative
ideas is more important for growth and stability of an organisation.
High company moral: A diverse workplace in which variations are celebrated and
embraced is a place where workers enjoy coming to work. When an employees are happy at
work, the entire morale automatically enhances. There is less misunderstanding, and employees
of ASDA are more likely to create team priorities. As it move the organisation forward, rather
than emphasising only on personal goal.
Therefore, all these are consider main strategies to overcome impact of workforce
diversity of ASDA. Innovative idea and high moral externally support an organisation to
improve their corporate strategy and retain long lasting relation with employees and in the
marketplace.
