COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF ANTI-AGING COSMETIC PRODUCTS2
Introduction
Cosmetic products are facing a huge surge of demand globally. Increasing desire for
youth and innovation of various anti-aging ingredients are contributing greatly in this field.
Anti-oxidants are the principal compounds that are utilized widely in different combinations
to achieve expected results that slow the normal aging process in humans. Global
Cosmeceuticals Market Outlook (2016) found that an astonishing amount of 31.84 billion
dollars in US, was generated from cosmetic industry by 2016, where anti-aging products
were responsible for obtaining the highest revenue amount.
Aim
This research focuses on evaluating cost-effectiveness and efficiency of various anti-
aging products marketed by parent companies.
Background
A study by Suter et al. (2016) has unraveled, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN)
comprised of a heptapeptide derived from shea butter, as a potent ingredient of skin aging
treatment. Application of this synthetic nanoparticle among participants had enhanced the
expression of protective enzymes like NADPH quinone oxidoreductase, peroxiredoxin 1,
heme oxygenase 1 and showed additional capability of protecting epidermial layers from UV
irradiation, compared to chemical anti-oxidants used for manufacturing anti-aging
cosmeceuticals. However, production of these nanoparticles in an industrial scale is highly
expensive due to critical steps involving lipid emulsification and use of microfluidizer for
preparing heptapeptides-containing solid nanoparticles.
