how organisations move towards digital in order to maintain its performance but it lacks data
about Impact of COVID-19 global pandemic on the productivity and performance. In order to
fulfil this gap, some of the research questions were develop that is given below:
Impact of COVID-19 global pandemic on the productivity and performance of Asda
As per the view point Craven et. al., 2022, the COVID-19 put a profound impact on the
productivity of the companies. It has a direct impact on the level of production by affecting the
availability of resources and equipment. During the pandemic, it was quite difficult to get
suitable number of employees to get the work done. Due to lack of labour, companies often faced

pandemic time. It directly affected their overall level of production and productivity. The
company faced deep decline in sales from physical stores. Additionally, they were not able to
procure necessary amount of raw material, resources and equipment for the purpose of
production. Apart from this, sales and profit margin of ASDA got highly affected through global
pandemic. In addition, supply chain of ASDA got highly affected during the pandemic time due
to shortage of labour, transportation and supply facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic caused
stressed on food systems and created several challengers. It was required for the companies to
make sure the continued availability of food to address the demand of public. However, it was
difficult for the organization to offer timely delivery of goods to final consumers. Here,
company needs to have sufficient number of employees to address the needs of customers in
timely manner. Therefore, the global pandemic profoundly affected the overall productivity and

Challenges faced by Asda due to COVID-19 global pandemic
As per the view point of Halan, 2021, the COVID-19 caused several challenges that will
put a direct impact on effective functioning of the business entities. To control the transmission
of virus, lockdown was imposed within different countries across the world. Due to the
lockdown, people were not able to move from one place to other that directly affected the sales
and revenue of the organizations. In addition to this, companies were not able to find necessary
human resources to handle the production process. Shortage of labour is one of the most
effective challenges which were faced by the companies throughout the global pandemic. The
shortage of labour put a tremendous impact on the overall production and productivity of the
companies. Disruption of supply chain also caused major issue during the pandemic. Due to the
lockdown, it was quite difficult to exchange goods or services. Therefore, the companies face
difficulty in terms of addressing the market demand in timely manner. In context of ASDA, they
also faced tremendous challenge during the pandemic time. Additionally, the pandemic also
affected the working conditions of the company. Majority of the people were working remotely.
It was quite difficult for the company to implement technology to conduct the meetings virtually
during the initial time. Additionally, the employees were not familiar with advanced technology
hence, the company had to spend amount on training & development of workforce. Due to the
high dependency on technologies, it was quite difficult to take prompt decisions. In the
respective organization, decisions are often made by consent of all the employees. During the
virtual meeting, it is quite difficult to maintain the consent that also caused delay in the overall
decision-making. In addition, the COVID-19 also minimized the interaction between managers
and employees. They used to interact through online mediums which minimized the personal
interaction. As people were not able move out from their house that put a direct impact on the
sales of the company. Gross profit and operating income of ASDA also reduced down due to the
severe impact of COVID-19. The operating profit of the respective company reduced down by
16.7% to 486.5 million in 2020 (ASDA profits tumble as COVID costs bite, 2021). Additional
cost of maintenance enhanced the overall operating cost of the respective company. Supply chain
and logistic facilities of the organization also got affected during the global pandemic. Hence, the
company faced tremendous challenges during the pandemic time that will affect their future
performance as well.

As per the point of view of Andy Garner, 2020, there are various challenges that an
organization has to encounter due to the situation of COVID – 19 pandemic. These challenges
have negatively impacted the operation's of the retail organizations and reduced their overall
productivity. One of the major impact of COVID – 19 situation has been disruption within the
supply chain which has caused retail organizations to loose their efficiency as well as
effectiveness within the market. This has also caused retail business to see reduction in customer
base due to lack of product availability. In addition to this, the pandemic situation has
contributed towards the challenge of decline in sales and profitability due to reduced marking
and supply chain operations. Furthermore, there have been various restriction placed by the
government which has restricted the movement of labour. This has caused a shortage of labour
within the retail organizations and have rendered them unproductive. This has influenced the
overall operations of retail organizations and stunned their growth as well (Andy.,2020). The
situation of COVID – 19 has also influenced the demand of customers which has become a
challenge for retail organisation in the market. The customers are now more oriented towards
purchasing products at lower cost due to their reduced purchasing power in the market. This has
made it difficult for retail organization to offer products at lower price as other challenges such
as constricted supply chain have a major impact.
Strategies adopted by Asda for dealing with the challenges arise due to COVID-19 global
pandemic
As per the viewpoint of Wade and Bjerkan, (2020), in order to deal with the covid
pandemic, there are various strategies which are adopted by ASDA. In reference to managers and
leaders, the organisation focused on implementing necessary rules and regulations implementing
by the government which comprises of maintaining social distancing, reducing the strength of
employees and allowing employees to work from home. The major strategies adopted were using
the same infrastructure but with different products. The organisation majorly focused on using
different channels and products in order to meet the requirements of the customers. In addition to
that the major strategy followed by ASDA is continuously facilitate innovations and keeping
consumers well informed about the products and services. In order to deal with the pandemic
situation, it is very important to take all the necessary precautions and worry less about the
outcomes. Moreover, the leaders and managers of ASDA implemented various changes which
were needed in order to deal with the outburst and making strategic cuts. The organisation ensure

According to Edinger, (2020), various business organisations has suffered a lot due to
pandemic and which resulted in implementing new changes in the organisation such as
establishing face to face meeting, handling queries of customers and establishing communication
with each and every individual according to the new guidelines of pandemic. The major focus of
the organisation is to establish communication to remote working, dealing with the new laws and
regulations of the pandemic and maintaining social distancing. In context to organisation, the
managers and leaders initiated new policies and regulations in order to meet the pandemic
protocols. In context to managers, they implemented policies and plans to work remotely and
also creating a work from home strategy and avoiding glitch in the productivity. The
organisation's leaders should ensure that everyone has the capability to work from home when it
comes to access to online servers, internet connections, laptops and spending time to have access
to the remote tools. The major strategy implemented also involves future proof sales channels. In
context to ASDA, the organisation has adopted by encouraging virtual interactions and adapting
by moving sales online. The organisations need to break out the inflexible and rigid ways of
thinking and embracing the past lessons. In addition to that, it involves proper optimization of
future proof channels and embracing remote working, digital marketing, virtual learning and
online sales. With the help of implementing all these strategies it will help in increasing the
productivity and sales revenue resulting in more profits for the organisation. The major strategy

safety and sanitization and following the rules and regulations guided by the government.
As per the point of view of Sarah Nagem, 2020, there are various strategies that can be
adopted by retail organisations in order to overcome the challenges introduced by the situation of
COVID – 19 pandemic. The organizations can use the strategy of remote working which will
allow the business to not only keep its employees safe but ensure that maintain its efficiency
within their business operations. In addition to this, it can allow the organizations to keep their
employees motived in the pandemic situation. Furthermore, the organizations can focus of
offering hybrid working patterns in order to ensure that the businesses are able to maintain a
high level of productivity and overcome the challenge of decline sales as well as profitability.
The hybrid working pattern provide a systematic as well as structured framework which will
in the entire organisation.

that are placed by the government the strategy to shift business operation on digital platforms
can be used as well. This will allow the retail organisations to reach customers in an efficient
manner along with the ability to generate high level of profitability. In addition to this, in order

ensure both growth as well as profitability.
Chapter 3- Research methodology
Research methodology
It is basically the process that is used to gather, identify and used data on the specific topic.
In addition to this, it is significant for researcher to select an appropriate method of research as
the overall result is based on it. Research method is categorised into two forms that is qualitative
and quantitative (Bairagi and Munot eds., 2019). In relation to the present study, quantitative
method is appropriate as it assist to gather data with high objectivity and accuracy that has
positive impact on the results. Moreover, it also assists investigator to gather numerical data
which is based on facts and figures and ensure valid information. On contrary, quantitative data
consumes high time and cost of researcher and is consider as its disadvantage of using it.
Sampling
It is the procedure that is mainly used to choose sample size out of the total population for
conducting the study. It is mainly of two forms that is non-probability and probability sampling
but as per the research topic, probability sampling method is effective and appropriate. In this,
random sampling which is a form of probability sampling is used and the reason to select it is
assist to choose large sample due to which researcher collect appropriate and accurate data. the
disadvantage of using it is it arise cost to researcher. The respondents selected for present study
is 30 and is the employees of Asda who provide appropriate data to researcher.
Data collection
It is referred as the process to collect data by mean of primary as well as secondary data
