Statistics, which is a numerical data is the study and interpretation of data in various ways
such as collecting the data set, analysing it, review and even drawing conclusions from that
numerical data (Savage, M.J., and et.al., 2020). It is primarily a crucial process which assists to
draw conclusions from data and make decisions on the basis of that data. This report provides an
overview of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of the impact that it had on the healthcare,
economy and social lives of people living in UK. It provides various statistics regarding the
pandemic and its situation in UK along with the measure he UK government too to reduce the
impact of COVID-19. Various graphs, pie charts and numerical statistics have been used in the
process to depict a better picture of the same.
TASK 1
Covid-19 in UK.
Covid-19 had a devastating impact on the entire world with lacs and lacs of people who
lost their lives or someone in their family due to the coronavirus. The governments around the
globe were constantly working upon policies and strategies to save the lives of their people in the
critical times of the pandemic and slow down the spread of the virus. The UK government was
also seeking to save the lives of people by implementing dramatic measures along with measures
economic, social and healthcare activities. The entire process was very tough for countries round
the world but especially for a proactive country like UK as it constitutes for a massive mixed
population of people globally.
After the first outbreak of the virus in the end of February 2020, UK imposed a
nationwide lockdown in March 2020 to control the outbreak of the virus. This helped to control
the spread of the virus in the country but took a high toll on the economy of the UK. Different
sectors were hit differently during the pandemic with health care and economy being the worst
hit sectors. The health care in UK was burdened with patients which was hugely exceeding the
capacity which the UK hospitals had to effectively deal with. Although the healthcare in UK was
built strong enough to be prepare for a medical emergency even in national or global terms, but
the intensity at which COVID arrived was not at all predictable to the world hence leading to
massive deaths (Nundy, S., and et.al., 2021). The government in UK, in the entire time period
focussed upon informing people more about the virus and effectively maintain social distancing

and less physical interactions. It also worked along with their healthcare and R&D departments
to find the cure and vaccines for the treatment of the virus or at least reduce the intensity of it so
that the number of deaths in the country could be controlled. As the major impact the virus had
was the loss of millions of lives in the entire world including UK which created a havoc in the
country and countries around the globe. The deaths in UK from the March of 2020 till July 2022
has been depicted below with the help of a graph (Ng, J.J., and et.al., 2020).

Impact of COVID-19 on healthcare in the UK.
The COVID-19 pandemic as a health crisis had almost closed down the economy
globally. Extensively showcasing how economy and healthcare are interrelated. In the entire
world, there was no healthcare systems which was designed strong enough to handle such a crisis
with an unforeseeable and massive heath care challenges. With an effect on economies, the
decline in the jobs, employment and the earning of people severely affected the healthcare
facilities they were receiving along with the treatments and medicines (Adam, D., 2020). During
the times of the pandemic, only people with high income levels were able to effectively maintain
regular healthcare expenses and doctor visits. In the peak times, people with low income levels
suffered to recover treatments and visit the hospitals when faced the disease. After realising the
intensity of the pandemic, NHS came forward to assist and provide almost all the residents with
its healthcare services despite the immense level of health facilities demands as they saw the
healthcare system in UK collapse due to the pandemic. The UK government planned upon an
extensive plan of action to effectively handle the crisis and help the healthcare system in these
crucial times. In the coming years, the health care staff in UK especially will suffer with two
major additional issues: the physical as well as mental exhaustion of the healthcare staff along
with an extensively overused hospital infrastructure. The second one being the increasing
accumulation of the healthcare procedures. Even the healthcare workers faced numerous
challenges pertaining to emotional breakdowns, serious exhaustion, overload work burdens with
high number of patients. The graph below depicts the number of cases which were occurring in
the times of the pandemic (Coccia, M., 2021).

Impact of COVID-19 on economy of the UK.
Covid-19 had a major impact on UK as a nation and affected all aspects of the nations
along with the lives of people living there. Economy remained the most hit in these times as the
job & employment of around 7.6 million people or approximately 24% of the entire workforce
residing in UK was at a risk in the times of Covid-19 and the following lockdowns. Due to such
massive impact on all economic aspects, people who were earning lower incomes or were from
low income households suffered extensively. According to the report of Office of National
Statistics, in a two weeks’ time from April 6 to April 19, 2020, UK faced a 23% pause in its
trading or closing of businesses and 60% of those which continued faced massive losses in this
time period (Cogan, N., and et.al., 2021). This fall in output and economic failure resulted in loss
of employments in the UK with more than 7 million jobs which were measured to be at risk. This
resulted in seriously affected productions and outputs in the country which impacted the incomes
and revenues of the companies in different industries leading to many enterprises to shut their
operations during these times. The GDP started to decline and was 25% less in February 2020,
further declining in the next 4 months following the next waves of the pandemic. The graph
below shows the GDP in UK was affected in the times of COVID-19.

Impact of COVID-19 on social life of the UK.
The social life in UK was extensively affected with numerous lockdowns, social
distancing which massively affected the social relations and life of people in comparison with
previous situations. People living in UK were shut in their houses due to lockdowns so as to
control the spread of the virus. The physical meetings and interactions almost got zeroed down
due to this situation. Although this gave rise to a new concept of digital interactions which
increased in high numbers as people started to communicate through internet as a medium to
continue their social aspects in their lives. These also helped to provide mental assistance and
stability to those who lost their loved ones or were suffering exhaustion due to the intense
situation of the pandemic and lockdowns (Plummer, N.R., and et.al., 2020).
