Creating Inclusive School Environment
Numerous children go to school and experience harassment and bullying, feel
uncomfortable about discussions in classroom about their families and hear homophobic epithets.
For those children, families of whose don’t fit father-mother-child prototype, the schools could
be place where they would feel ignored and marginalized. Sexual minority parents would have
right in expressing concern as well as taking significant efforts for preventing unsupportive an
unwelcoming climate of school for the children. While it is expected from the teachers to accept
diversity as well as able in instructing with cultural competency’s certain degree. Safe Schools
Programs mandate similar educator training that is related with anti-discrimination and training
school-wide for prevention of suicide and violence (Church et al. 270). Extra exercise that is
utilized in training of leadership training involves uses of role-play and vignettes. The school
personnel are instructed first in equality’s various principles and proper interactions with the
individuals from various background.
The training staff must recognize as well as respond properly to the harassments
depending on the sexual orientation. Additional step which could be taken by school personnel
and classroom teachers is facilitating harassment free environment for the school. Many agencies
give training for harassment of sexual orientation, which targets specially school personnel and
teachers. Involving programs and school clubs for awareness of diversity is additional strategy to
ensure that positive message of school is conveyed by extracurricular activities. Gay-Straight
Alliance (GSA) is offered by several schools (Goldberg et al. 695). Schools might wish in
participating in several diversity celebrations.
