The criminal law provides provisions for a wide range of crimes which are punishable under the law. Corruption is related to counter-terrorism because corrupt people help terrorist organisations for personal gain which assist them in fulfilling their motives.

Crime is referred to an unlawful act which is punishable by a state or other authorities. The
criminal law provides provisions for a wide range of crimes which are punishable under the law
(Quinney and Shelden, 2018). The legal effects of crime are that the person who commits the
crime is held liable under the criminal law in order to punish for his/her crimes. A legal
obligation is imposed after committed and reporting of a crime on the state or other authorities
to investigate such crime in order to find out its root cause to determine who the culprit is and
who are affected by the crime, both mentally and physically. Crimes and their legal effects are
affected politically because the government has the authority to make laws under which people
can hold liable for committing a crime (Ashworth and Horder, 2013). For example, the
government can pass a bill to make trading of a specific item a crime in the country which
shows how crimes are affected by politics. Similarly, the government has the power to propose
and pass a bill in it which it can consider an activity illegal to protect the interest of public. The
legal effect of different crimes which has categorised into a wide range of classes with the
popularity of the internet and other technological advancements has changed across the globe.
The political authorities also deal with this problem while forming strategies in order to govern
and eliminate crimes in their respective countries (Quinney and Shelden, 2018).
Corruption is referred to dishonest or illegal behaviour, especially by a person who is misusing
public power for personal gain. When a person abuses his/her power in order to gain personal
benefits, it is considered as corruption (Rose-Ackerman and Palifka, 2016). Corruption is related
to counter terrorism because corrupt people help terrorist organisations for personal gain
which assist them in fulfilling their motives. Terrorist groups get help from corrupt officers
operating in key positions who are willing to abuse their powers in order to gain personal
benefits. They are willing to help terrorists to succeed in their goals which have a disastrous
impact on many people for personal benefits. For example, the corruption in the defence sector
assists terrorist in getting access to weapons which they use to conduct mass murders and
spread terror among common people. Therefore, corruption makes it difficult for the
government to effectively formulate and implement counter terrorism policies (Herik, van der
Herik and Schrijver, 2013). Corruption is also affected politically because a person who operates
in high political positions abuses their positions to help terrorists. They get support from

terrorist groups to get votes after which they misuse their position and trust of the public by
helping and supporting terrorist groups which create challenges for counter terrorism policies
(Rose-Ackerman, 2013). High rate of corruption leads to high rate of crimes because it becomes
easier for criminal to avoid the law which punishes them for their actions.
