Proposed Title: The effects of Domestic Violence among the Intimate
Partners
Thesis Statement: Intimate Partner Violence is the act of violence by a current or former
partner or spouse in any kind of intimate relation. Although intimate partner violence is
significant yet it is claimed to be preventable. The paper will discuss about the validity of the
claim. The theories associated with such violent and abusive behaviours among the partners
would also be discussed.
Introduction
Topic sentence: What is intimate partner violence?
Research evidence: Intimate partner violence can be defined as the act of physical violence
which include violence that is sexual in nature, psychological harm or stalking done by the
former or current spouse or partner of the victim with whom an intimate relationship exists
(Devries et al., 2013).
Prevalence in Australia
Topic sentence: The prevalence and consequences of intimate partner violence in Australia
Research evidence: The prevalence and consequences of domestic violence cannot be
considered to be a new occurrence. However, the growing recognition of the fact that the
conducts of domestic violence are not isolated but are rather behavioural patterns that are
violating towards the rights of people and in furtherance limit the participation of the
individuals in the society and is damaging to the health of the people, is considered as new
(García-Moreno et al, 2013).
In Australia intimate partner violence is most often than not can be seen as going unreported
and therefore the true extent of this problem is not known (Aph.gov.au, 2019).
Sociological theories
Topic sentence: According to the sociological theories violent behaviour has been explained
as structural functions of the society.

2CRIMINOLOGY
Research evidence: In the family violence theories, such as the resource theory, subculture
of violence theory, social control theory, systems theory, and ecological theory intimate
partner violence has been described as the manifestation of confliction in the family best
assumed by way of examining the social structures which contribute towards using violence
(Lawson 2012).
Psychological Perspective
Topic sentence: The negative effects that are found about the intimate partner violence
towards the mental and physical health, and the development of the victim is observed to be
deep and lasting for a long time.
Research evidence: It is observed in many studies that not only the direct victims of the
intimate partner violence suffer from the negative effects, but also the people associated with
the victims including their children are also seen as suffering the negative effects of the
intimate partner violence (Miller-Graff 2016).
Policy
Topic sentence: There have been proposals of strategies for the improvement of the health of
the victims of the intimate partner violence.
Research evidence: Many strategies have been proposed to the ambulance services in
Australia the improvement of the health of the victims of the intimate partner violence. These
strategies can be observed as including proper education of the related people, collecting
data, collaborating with the external agencies and supporting the zero tolerance of any kind of
violence towards any person. Prompt actions from the ambulance services towards IPV are
also undertaken (Sawyer et al. 2015).
