This document is a critical reflection on the Autobiographical Narrative activity and a learning plan for various skills required in the human service profession. Part I: Reflect on the Autobiographical Narrative activity
As an individual who has always been passionate about service to humanity, I feel quite good
as a read about my experimental history. My learning has been in both practical experiences
working under NGO’s and for community organization together with my experience in the
human service program has been quite amazing. Serving humanity gives me a sense of
satisfaction and motivates me to keep doing more to help the people around me. I feel convinced
that seeking to pursue a career in human service was the best decision that I have ever made in
my life.
I am particularly surprised at how my passion for service to humanity came about. Back in
the small part of India where I come from, the concept of human service is not largely advocated
for. In most cases, people are more aligned with medical and management courses. In addition,
no member of my family has previously had an interest in a human service career. Trying to
understand how my passion for human service developed to the point of abandoning my business
degree for a course in human services. Finally, the fact that I have served humanity for my entire
life and the satisfaction I get while engaging in such endeavors has always fascinated me.
As an individual committed to service to humanity, I will be responsible for helping
individuals within the community and organizational levels to perform at optimal levels.
Becoming a successful human service professional will require me to be a very flexible person.
This is so particularly because I will be faced with new demands work in challenging situations
and work during odd hours. Without some level of flexibility, as a professional, I would not
succeed in performing these duties and responsibilities. In addition, working in the community
settings requires empathy which entails being compassionate towards others. While working
with my clients therefore, it will be my obligation to equip them with the necessary skills and

teach them strategies to help them move from their present situations. Thirdly, I will also require
me to be competent in my profession in order to meet the requirements of various services
involved in human services. Competence will, therefore, help me as well as my clients. Finally,
trustworthiness is also a major requirement. The person I want to become must be a trustworthy
person. This will be important in making my clients more relaxed and open.
My choice for this profession was necessitated by various reasons. The first reason is the fact
the I have been passionate about human services from my childhood days. Secondly, although I
have worked in a non-governmental organization and under various community-based projects,
may not be well conversant with the rules and regulations, governing human service. My
enrollment in a human service course will, therefore, equip me with the skills required by
professionals working in the human service field. Some of these skills include communication
skills, critical thinking skills, emotional intelligence, and active listening skills. These skills are a
mandatory requirement for human service provision. In addition, by undertaking this program, I
will learn about the rules and regulations governing human services. This will, therefore,
improve my professionalism in the human services field and ability to deliver.
Part II. Learning Plan
1. Professionalism
Professionalism and ethics are important areas in the human services profession. In
particular, human service professionals are required to adhere to the professional ethical code of
conduct protecting the dignity and rights of their clients. Ethical standards require human service
practitioners to be objective, genuine and honest. I have acquired this skill through the
community-based projects I have taken part in as well as through class activities. I have

demonstrated the skill by acting with integrity, honoring the cultural diversity and promote social
justice of the clients I have worked with.
In order to strengthen my professionalism, I will first enroll for a course in
professionalism to acquire the necessary professional skills. Secondly, I will also liaise with
professionals in the field of human services to obtain key lessons about professionalism and
ethical practice. I will also attend professional workshops focused on these areas in order to learn
and acquire the necessary skills. On top of this, I will also take part in various classroom and
workplace activities focused on professionalism and ethical practice in human services. With
these skills, I will be able to maintain professionalism an observe ethical obligations in my
practice.
2. Critical thinking
The ability to think critically, make effective decisions, and solve problems is an essential
requirement in the human service profession. Taking part in solving complex community
problems in my Former non-governmental organization has played a major role in improving my
critical thinking skills
In order to achieve this learning outcome, I will enroll in online decision-making and
critical thinking courses. In addition, taking part in course group activities and completing
various assessments related to the course will equip me with the necessary skills needed to
achieve this outcome. Taking part in in-group projects will enhance my ability to think critically
and improve my problem-solving skills. I will also engage in intensive personal study to enhance
my ability to frame and solve problems, think critically and make effective decisions.
3. Communication skills

Effective communication skills are an important skill in the human service profession. First,
human service professionals deal with a wide range of individuals within their operational areas.
These individuals may possess different traits, which may hamper or facilitate communication. I
have improved my ability to communicate effectively by interacting with colleagues and
community members in my previous community-based projects
In order to improve and strengthen my communication skills, I will also enroll for a course in
communication skills in order to improve my verbal and non-verbal communication skills. In
addition, I will also take part in individual and group presentations in both classroom and
workplace context to improve my level of confidence and ability to communicate effectively in
various settings.
4. Breadth and depth of knowledge
The acquisition of knowledge relevant to the profession is critical in helping human service
professionals to become outstanding in their profession. My engagement in practical work-based
and classroom projects has helped me to broaden my knowledge in human services
I intend to achieve this learning outcome by doing personal studies in and outside the
classroom. In addition, I will also achieve the outcome by competing all the assessments related
to this program on my own through consultation of multiple learning materials. I also intend to
engage in discussions with peers and colleagues on pertinent issues related to the human service
program. Such engagements will provide an opportunity for the acquisition of insights relevant
to the program. Finally, upon completing my degree program I will also enroll for a master’s
degree program, to acquire more knowledge on human services
5. Leadership skills

As a human service professional, I have taken up leadership and supervisory roles in various
community projects and the classroom context. Successful completion of these roles has played a
major role in equipping me with leadership skills.
In order to achieve this learning outcome, I will present myself as a leader in various group
projects to achieve the requisite skills. Additionally, I will also enroll in a short leadership course
to learn the essentials of leadership and supervision in the human service profession. Finally, I
consult various leadership materials to enhance my understanding of the roles of leadership and
the aspects that need to be considered in successful leadership and supervisory roles
