Power Development in Rural Australia
Introduction
The journal is a critical review of the journal written by (Clifton & Boruff, 2010), based on
assessing recent solar power development within the rural field of the Australia. A specific
topic of the Engineering Research Challenge (ERC), which has been chosen, is the evaluation
and assessment of recent solar energy conversion and storage in Australia.
Critical Review
The selected journal (Clifton & Boruff, 2010), has identified the prospective for concentrated
solar power (herein after referred as CSP) for generating electrical power within a rural field
of Western Australia (referred as WA). Most importantly, the journal has identified the need
of addressing the recent contest of increasing demand of electrical power, attached with a
decreasing fossil fuel base. The authors of the paper have focused over the implications of
greenhouse gases emission, which has enthused energies worldwide for developing low-cost
as well as reliable deliveries of electricity through renewable energy sources.
To find the potential of CSP, a detailed review of policies intended for stimulating the
contribution of renewable energy resources has been highlighted. In this context, paper has
focused upon the constant reliance on fossil fuels for supplying present as well as future
electricity demands of Australia so that readers can get the idea about the extent of global
energy dependence over fossil fuels (Baig et al., 2015). Moreover, a detailed discussion over
the characteristics of major CSP solar electricity generation techniques took place within the
research of the selected study. A critical review of this paper is suggesting that, this paper’s
methodology utilised data of greenhouse gases emissions per KWH related with the several
electricity production methods. For an instance, author has highlighted greenhouse gases
intensity as 30 g CO2-eq. KWH for the solar tower CSP electricity generation method.
Likewise, the paper has provided the greenhouse gases intensity for several electricity
generation methods like tidal, wind, coal, oil and solar.

Hence, potential CSP spots have been defined within the Wheatbelt area of WA by
superimposing ecological variables as well as electricity substructure over a great resolution
power grid by utilising extensively available datasets as well as GIS software. The research
analysis conducted in this paper confirmed that CSP facilities are easily be located over huge
fields of the Wheatbelt. In this way, the paper’s research underlined the need of developing a
policy rule that can actively add as well as stimulates CSP.
Discussion
In this way, the journal has successfully defined the aspects, which are influencing CSP
development in the Australian region. Besides, the research study has also utilised quickly
available datasets for identifying optimal destinations for CSP positioning at satisfactory
scale of perseverance within the Wheatbelt area of WA. However, the limitation of this
journal was that it was mainly focused on Wheatbelt region of WA, which is restricting the
datasets and results to this particular region only. Hence, it could be extended all over the
WA region (Baig et al., 2015).
Conclusion
In conclusion, a critical review of the chosen journal article (Clifton & Boruff, 2010), has
been done successfully. Results of the research conducted in the paper suggests that CSP
power generation services can easily be located on extended fields of the Wheatbelt, WA that
is also able to tailored to regional patterns of electricity supply as well as demand of future
Australia.
