CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE FILM TRAITOR OR PATRIOT

CRITICAL REVIEW
Introduction
The Traitor or Patriot is a French-language film Traitre ou Patriote (Godbout). It is a
documentary film produced in Quebec by the National Film Board (NFB) Canada in the year
2000. It is directed by Jacques Godbout and he also is a star in the film. The style of the cinema
belongs to the Quebec cinema direct school of film making. The current analysis includes a
critical review of the film.
Critical Review
The film starts by analyzing of the Quebec Premier Adelard Godbout place in the history.
Godbout has not been considered well in the Quebec historians and citizens. Godbout was
considered important from 1939 to 1944. When Godbout held office, he laid the groundwork for
the Quiet Revolution of the 1950s and 1960s. The movement was seen to institute compulsory
education of people, providing women the right to vote, creation of Hydro-Quebec and also
freeing the province from the dominant clergy. The production, similar to documentaries depicts
Jacques Godbout's style with the inclusion of himself in the narrative thread. Each scene set up,
he is seen depicting his research of the subject and way it interacts with others for pushing the
documentary forward. The documentary film can be criticized to include only a single dimension
or point of view of Godbout. The film does not effectively evaluate the contributions or the
failures of Godbout. However, the various movements that were started by Godbout can place
him as a patriot. With the introduction of several movements, there was seen several benefits that
change the ways, rights of people in Quebec.
