Bramhall, M. D., Gray, L., Corker, C., Garnett, K., & Hill, R. (2012). Analysis of Critical
Thinking Skills in an International, Cross-Institutional Group of Engineering Master's
Students. Industry and Higher Education, 26(4), 323-327.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the underlying causes behind the lack of critical
thinking skills of engineering master’s students in UK course, who are from another cultural or
national background. This report followed the primary data collection by interviewing Master’s
engineering students from two universities in the UK to assess their conceptualization of critical
thinking. The study found that, due to their previous learning experience and procedure, the
conceptual and international ability of international students are lower. The study has also found
that foreign students prefer to guide by the supervisors instead of finding the solution which
critical thinking. According to Bramhall et al. (2012), the students from different culture or
nationality collect the required information from conventional search engine rather than their
educational search engine or provided search engine by their universities.
The report is very helpful to analyse the learning practices of Engineering Masters
students from different cultural or national background. The report has successfully presented the
data regarding the learning process and understanding strategy, the learning preference of the
targeted sample size with evidence and explanations.
There are some major limitations in this report concerning the data analysis and the
interpretation. The report was aimed to find the original cause behind the dilemma. However, the
report focused more on the outcomes rather than focusing on the underlying causes behind these
issues. The research did not execute a detailed exploration on the impact of cultural background
on the learning practice and the consequences of the existing learning practices they have.
