CRITIQUE OF A CORRELATIONAL STUDY 2
Introduction
The study purposed to establish a prognostic association between STBs and
connectedness among adolescents’ adults. The method used in this study is considered
appropriate since it determines whether there is a direct relationship between connectedness and
adolescent STB which was later used to update suicide prevention policies in different schools.
The target population of the study was adolescents of ages between 18 and 20 years who are still
studying in a post-secondary institute in the Pennsylvania state. The sample used comprised of
adolescent students studying in two college institutions across the Washington County and
Fayette county located in southwestern Pennsylvania. The study also aimed to answer questions
like how are connectedness and STB related as well as how are STB scores predicted by the
level of connectedness among adolescents?
The study employed a correlational design where a questionnaire was used as a data
collection instrument deemed appropriate. The questionnaire was published and validated before
used to collect data. The independent factor, connectedness, was gaged using the Hemingway -
Measure of Adolescent Connectedness while the response variable, suicidal behaviors, and
thoughts, was calibrated using the Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R).
Both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were computed using the data
collected. Inferential statistics included linear regression analyses and Pearson product moment
correlation. The study data collection tool contained 57 questions of the independent variable
connectedness and four questions regarding the response variable suicidal behaviors
questionnaire, all questions estimated to take around 15-20 minutes to complete. The
questionnaires were administered at the participants appropriate time during college class,
ensuring the study do not interfere with participants daily routine.
