CULTURAL SAFETY3 Part 2: Written Reflection Australia is a cosmopolitan nation. There are many different clans, people born from differentplaces,peoplecomingfromdifferentreligionsandpossessingdifferentbeliefs, socioeconomic difference and people speaking different languages. This makes Australia have a diverse culture (Rickard, 2018). As a health care practitioner, I need to understand this diversity and work towards offering a culturally safe environment to the patients. This is a journey am in. This writes up discusses what is cultural safety, cultural competency and goes on to reflect on the various behaviours, beliefs, and values which I possess. Cultural Safety Cultural safety is marked by an environment that is safe for people, where people are treated with respect. Knowledge, experience, and respect is shared with dignity. Considering everyone as an equal partner (Antonsen, 2017). Cultural competence is whereby we bring together the different behaviours, attitudes and along with the set policies we create an environment where different cultures are appreciated (Garneau & Pepin, 2015). Therefore with this understanding, it’s important to evaluate my journey to becoming a competent practitioner. Values Values are a wide range of choices appropriate for an expected outcome. Values show one's understanding of what is right and wrong( Boer & Boehnke, 2016). The values one have influences their behaviours and attitudes. Therefore they in a big way determines one's responses to patients and workmates. Calmness is one of the values I own; this is an inborn value within me. The value has helped me to face harsh and violent people in soberness, reason when there are urgent issues to be attended to especially when there is a patient who is in critical condition. This has helped me deal with different people who need particular attention due to their beliefs or culture. Faith is the value that was introduced to me by my parents. They later took me to the church where I have grown in my Christian faith. The value has helped me stand during tough moments because of the trust I have in God. The value needs to be evaluated time to time to ensure that I don’t judge people according to their faith since we have different religions and we all have a right to whichever religion one wishes to associate with (Pritchard, 2017). CULTURAL SAFETY4 I am confident. This value was cultivated in me by my parents. We were always taught to carry out my duties with confidence. Overconfidence is a vice associated with this value, if one is not conscious, when a case which is severe and beyond my capability comes I sometimes find myself risking to handle it, and this sometimes turns out to be insensitive according to our practising ethics. Openmindedness is the other value that has made me grow very fast in my carrier; this is because am always open to new ideas. Behaviours This the way one conducts themselves (King, Dawson, Rothberg & Batmaz, 2016). Adaptability has helped me make decisions when there are some severe cases to be attended. I am flexible, and when a change comes, I like accepting the change and learning to live with the change as fast as possible. This behaviour has helped me work in different places with different people across the different cultures. I am remorseful, should I do something wrong am left feeling so regretful, this causes me to underperform that day due to fear that the same mistake may reoccur, am working on the understanding that a mistake is a mistake after one repeats. I need to get my emotions to balance so that when things don’t go as I expected my other duties are still appropriately accomplished. Cordial is a behaviour that has helped me cope with many different people. Am very friendly, heartfelt, and always relaxed even when situations are alarming. This helps me have a moment to think on the solution when matters are out of balance. This nature though has though fixed me in one or two circumstances since sometimes I get to compromise my issues since I cannot leave a patient unattended to just because it’s someone else duty, my nature makes me feel like I have committed the worst sin. I need to strike a balance between job and my family life (Armstrong, Atkin- Plunk & wells, 2015).Desire, my longing is to see the patients get better this motivates me to work hard and to do the best I can. The other longing is to know that I have improved in my career regarding gaining more knowledge and developing my skills further. Beliefs Beliefs are all things that we hold on our lives to be true. They are set in such a way that they make a reality of our lives since you live what you believe in, this determines the way one will perform even at an area of duty (Hopkins, 2016). CULTURAL SAFETY5 and my religion taught us that whenever we invested in others, then this investment will bounce back. This has given me strength and reason to help others whenever they need me and also do my best in my area of duty. I believe in accepting accountability. Most are the times when people desire that they were not caught after they make a mistake, I am different, my wish is to do things the right way. Should by any chance things go wrong, and the outcomes are undesired. I like taking responsibility rather than place blame on others. I have found difficulty when dealing with people who are not liberated. This is because they are always in search of ways to cover up, which results in disagreement. Successful for me is not an option, it is a must. Henrich, (2015) states that success cannot come from what is within me alone but through my social interactions can gain more knowledge and succeed. I have found challenges when dealing with people from different cultures, but this has been a learning ground. Therefore I have taught myself to face the obstacles positively so that with time I will be able to work anywhere without any difficulty. Finally, I believe that I can always learn new skills, whatever I have is not sufficient enough.I have room to learn from my colleagues and also advance knowledge from the school to make sure that my performance improves for better every time a chance arises (Durey et al., 2017). Conclusion The success of delivery of health care to patients depends to a great extent in the environment in which such a service is given. When patients visit the health centre, they expect that such a centre will offer the best atmosphere which can be a catalyst for the healing process. Beyondthephysicalenvironmentinthehealthcentre,thereisalsotheemotionaland psychologicalenvironment.Such an environmentcan only be offered by the caregivers. Therefore, there is a need for a functional interaction with my values, beliefs and behaviours to guarantee a viable environment within the health care centre. Mind Map and Written Reflection
