This article discusses the experience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people when accessing culturally incompetent services and the importance of cultural safety in nursing. It also provides ways to support the delivery of culturally safe services and programs. The legislative context for cultural safety of Aboriginal children and adults is explained, along with the Early Learning Framework that supports these legislative rights. The article also covers self-determination and how to encourage it in childcare activities or programs. Lastly, it discusses the importance of reflecting on one's own biases and ways to promote awareness of own and other cultures in work practices.
