Reflection on Cultural Safety and Nursing Practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

MAIN BODY
I am from Indian cultural background and my culture helped me in learning that everyone
should be treated equally whether they are from lower class background or from upper class
background. I have learned from my culture that no one should be discriminated on the basis of
their class, culture etc. when I started working in Hospital, I had observed that most of the
Aboriginal people do not enjoy equal rights and access to primary health care. From my culture I
have learnt that everyone should be treated equally and provided equal rights. I will use this
learning within hospital and will try to provide equal treatment and primary care. According to
my opinion, everyone should have equal rights and there should be no discrimination among
people on the basis of culture, colour, tradition, religion or any other basis. It is important to treat
everyone with respect and give proper rights.
Culture, life experiences, dominant cultural beliefs has positive as well as negative
impact on my perception of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples. These strait islander
people are living on mainland Australia and these are of Melanesian origin who are having
different culture and tradition (Bnads, Orr and Clements, 2021). Culture has negative impact
like, lack of medical care, little education, high unemployment, poverty, broken families and
many other. These are some reason due to which people are not able to live their life properly
and they face many problems. My culture has taught me how to behave with others and treat
people. People are following their culture and tradition because it shows equality and unity
among people.
From my life experience I have learnt that mostly people are recognized by their culture,
background, socioeconomic status etc. and are provided with products, services, respect etc.
accordingly. Not only this it has also learnt that it is important to treat people equally because
impact of these differences upon people, their thinking and health is negative. My perception
helps nursing practice with aboriginal and Torres strait islander people as other staff members
are giving respect to these people and giving proper treatment to them.
I will try to use this learning within hospital and try to fulfil my roles and responsibilities
towards my patients including Aboriginal people so that they can gain access to primary health
care equally. My culture has taught me to provide high quality services to people especially in

terms of health and wellness regardless of their culture, background etc. I will use this teaching
to provide high quality primary care to Aboriginal people.
It is important to provide safe and healthy environment to islander people so that they can
stay safely and proper care can be given to them (Salmon et.al., 2019). I will give my best in
providing good treatment to people and try to reduce unemployment. It is my responsibility to
provide islander people proper care and facilities so that they did not face any problem. In future
for adopting culturally safe nursing care I will try to be open, honest, engage with all people as
individuals in a culturally safe and respectful way, focus upon developing health and positive
professional relationship with all kinds of patients regardless of their cultural background.
The podcast is connected with the principles of cultural safety and Aboriginal & Torres
Strait Islander people as according to principles respect should be given to people, there must be
no discrimination among people on the basis of colour, race, religion. People should get safe and
healthy working environment & proper care should be given to people. Yes, podcast is connected
with principles of safety because it aims at providing healthy environment to islander people.
Aboriginal and Torres islander people face many problems and they are not getting
proper care which is not good for their health (Day and et.al., 2021). I will provide them proper
care and good facilities s that they can get well soon and did not face any problem. I will provide
them good facilities and treatment so that they can recover soon and live their life safely. It is
important to provide proper care to strait islander people to improve their health and they are
having right to live life happily. I will give my best and provide good care to islander people and
good treatment will be given. It is important to take care of aboriginal and Torres strait islander
people so that they do not have to live on mainland and they can do job when they are fit and
healthy (Dudgeon, Watson and Holland, 2017). I will treat patients with respect and dignity,
create a safe and healthy environment for people to stay safely and live life easily. I will allocate
extra time for complex health and social needs.
