CULTURE AND HEALTH CARE CASE STUDIES
Introduction:
Culture has a strong relation with the health status and living condition of the individuals,
it is intricately associated with the living conditions and hence has a huge impact on how people
think, feel and belief. The impact of culture is also intricately linked with the socio-economic
determinants of health which is also a key facilitator of health status and health care accessibility
among the social strata (Ang, 2014). For the first case scenario, the selected culturally and
ethnically diverse group is the aboriginals, the first people of Australia. And the second cultural
groups chosen are the Chinese migrants living in Australia.
Case study 1:
Social determinants of health for aboriginals:
Social determinants for health can be defined as the close relationship between the health
outcomes and the quality of living that reflects the social environment of the individuals. There
are various social or socio-economic determinants of health and each of the components has a
significant impact on the health of the individual. Now the impact of the cultural identity plays a
deciding role in defining the impact of these determinants on the living and health status of
individual along with the community (Social determinants of Indigenous health, 2016). As
mentioned by Social determinants and the health of Indigenous peoples in Australia (2018), these
socioeconomic determinants act as a fundamental contributing factor for the huge gap in the
health status and life expectancy of the indigenous population as compared to the non-indigenous
populations. The first socio-economic determinant that is needed to be discussed in this context
is the socio-economic position and the early life. It has to be mentioned that both of the
determinants of health are interlinked with each other; the lack of enough financial stability and

respectable social position has a significant impact on the living condition. The socio-economic
position of the aboriginal communities is considerably low due to the lack of employment
opportunities and education which leads the aboriginals towards the higher rates of smoking,
substance use and dietary behaviour.
The next determinants is early life, where the lack of education, employment and social
privileges restrict the children from having better health for aboriginal communities. The third
determinant which has a huge impact on the health of the aboriginal groups is the social
exclusion resulting from unemployment, lack of education, stigmatization, and poverty which
not only affects their living condition or health status, also reduces the help seeking behaviours.
Considering employment and education, the impact of racial discrimination is also still prevalent
which lowers their employment opportunities, and along with that the language barrier for the
aboriginals is also delimiting (Aihw.gov.au, 2018). Housing and residential environment is the
next socioeconomic determinant to be discussed and for the aboriginals it is also scanty and
devoid of the amenities that the nonindigenous or non-native population enjoys. The residential
enviorone4mnty o the aboriginals is also less than comforting for most cases which impacts their
health and well-being status. Health choices and health promotional behaviour coupled with food
security is undoubtedly the last socioeconomic determinant group, that is needed to be discussed
the social isolation coupled with lack of health literacy makes the indigenous population devoid
of any marked health promotional behaviours as compared to the non-native mainstream society,
the lack of food security also plays a fundamental part in it (Social and Cultural Determinants of
Indigenous Health, 2018).
