Journal 1: Maly, I., & Varis, P. (2016). The 21st-century hipster: On micro-populations
in times of superdiversity. European Journal of Cultural Studies, 19(6), 637-653.
The article is chiefly based on the hipster culture which is a popular culture became famous
in the early 21st century. The study is completed by initiating secondary data collection
method. By reviewing several journals and gathering information from online resources, the
journal provides effective information regarding the “hipster culture”. However, the
discussion has not remained limited in defining the concept of the “hipster culture”. This
study analysis the accompanying identifies discourses on the follower of the mentioned
culture. Along with that it provides information regarding the reoccurring markers of hipster
identity. The study finally identifies the hipersters as “micro population”. The journal also
provides effective information regarding the “Hipster dilemma”.
This study also provides an outline of how the hipster culture is connected with the concept
of feminism in fashion industry and how both of these practices have sometimes followed a
wrong dimension of sexism and woman objectification. In this way the research paper has
briefly outlined the place or influence of feminism in fashion industry.
The journal is beneficial for having a critical understanding on the popular hipster culture. It
elaborates globalised indexes of the hipsters, hipster as a trans-local phenomenon, identity
discourse of hipster and some other aspects associated with the concept of the culture. By
using some images and graphics, and reviewing popular journals, the study provides a quite
comprehensive understanding regarding 21st century hipsters.

In this journal, Karen de Perthuis, has thrown light on a completely different aspect of the
fashion industry. She has effectively portrayer the darker side of the fashion industry whose’
apparent luster and grandeur belies its hidden gloomy face. From this study I have come to
know how the way women are being objectified in the works of eminent personalities and
how they are being overlooked by millions of audiences. The journal provides vivid and clear
understanding regarding the photographic manipulation. By using examples like the “It’s a
Jungle Out There”, the study has elaborated how sometimes art fails to connect with reality
and creates a new world “nearer to the heart’s desire”. This study provides a beneficial
understating of the gap between the real life woman and the portrayal of woman in the

fashion society. This journal also is competed by initiating secondary data analysis. Several
journals and articles are used for gathering information. The entire journal is enriched with
information that is quite beneficial for having an inside look at the fashion industry and for
developing critical thinking. The study shows how dress has become the symbol of sex and
gender. The study has provided several illustration such as illustration of Grandville,
“Fashionable people represented in public by their accoutrements,” 1844, Un Autre Monde, a

understanding regarding how the apparent fuss with feminism in this industry has failed to
remove and identify such major anti-feministic act in the fashion and film industry. This
forms another idea that the women oriented endeavor of the fashion society is ultimately
leading towards objectifying women. Thus, with the help of secondary research method the
journal provides huge information regarding the gap between reality and the fashion world
and the negative side of feminism in the fashion and film industry.
Journal 3: Keller, J. (2015). Girl power's last chance? Tavi Gevinson, feminism, and
popular media culture. Continuum, 29(2), 274-285.
This study is mainly about a teenage fashion blogger turned editor Tavi Gevinson. She is the
editor in chief of the online magazine “Rookie”. This magazine mainly focuses on the
product and circulation on women centric news, contents and feministic politics. The journal
has provided a ideological, textual and discursive analysis regarding the self produced media
of the female editor. The author has done this analysis by using theories of performativity.
The authror has stated that Gevinson skillfully uses the opportunities provided by digital
media for the purpose of articulating narratives of girl power. She uses the platform of digital
media also for the purpose of performing feministic girlhood subjectivity.
However, the author has provided a critical analysis of the endeavor of Gevinson. His
discussion has not remained limited in the mere portray of how the woman is using the digital
platforms. It has effectively analyzed the porous nature of post feministic media culture. The
author has provided a critical analysis of the way the self brand of Gevinson has reproduced
feminism. This analysis provides a clear glimpse of the way feminism has become a brand
and trend.

The analysis is mainly based on the portrayal of woman in the most prolific age in the
Hollywood industry. The era of 1930 was the golden period in the history of Hollywood. The
era portrayed the social transformation in the field of Hollywood and the various characters
that were being portrayed in the silver screen. The era portrayed the image of the women
through the films that were being released during that stage. The era highlighted the
transformation in the film industry of Hollywood. Various leaps and bounds are seen during
the era. Feminist theory, gender theory, film studies, communications were the trending terms
during that period. There was transformation in the field of onscreen and of screen scenario
of the actors at that time.
Fame of the Hollywood stars was at the hike during that stage. Film became an influential
instrument during that time to portray the image of the women. Various female characters in
film gained immense popularity at that stage. There was immense transformation in the field
of performing arts at that stage. The actors during that time especially the women actors
gained tremendous fame and respect due to the influential roles they portrayed in the screen.
The roles portrayed a vital effect on the society during that time. There was immense growth
in the film industry, and this made the industry a popular career option. Moreover, women
empowerment enriched tremendously during that time. The status of the film industry
changed tremendously. The reel life effect could be seen in the real life simultaneously.
Women empowerment saw a major hike during that phase and the gender inequality
prevailing during that time was totally overturned after the trendsetter by the women in the
field of performing arts.
Employment of women in various industries saw a major hike during that time. At one point
of time, there was human capital theory and the discrimination theory prevailing in the
society where women were completely disrespected by the society and male dominated
society prevailed during that period. Education in the society provided to the women was
much less in number as compared to the male in the society. However, after the advent of the
feminism in the reel world the concept of feminism diversified enormously. The trend setter
at that time was the concept of feminism, gender inequality, gender communication and the
communication at different levels in the society. Earlier women empowerment was not the
not talked about concept but after the reincarnation of the feminism the topic was being
discussed at every public platform be it newspaper, TV shows, news channels.

seemed as the authority in the society. Moreover, the male dominated society crushed and
equality started prevailing in the society thereafter. The equality could be seen in the society
and the free flow of communication started thereafter in the society. Two major female
characters of the Hollywood industry Grusinskaya and Flaemmchen were the brand
ambassadors of the women empowerment in the society. Women empowerment prevailed in
the society thereafter. The hike in the feminism was the tremendous persona during that time.

The purpose of this study is to focus on the how the male dominated movie industry has
gradually shifted from its previous stance and how the modern cinema industry has started
developing woman centric movies. The journal states that, previously, the fashion and film
industry was highly dominated by patriarchal attitude. Over the last few decades, a huge
number of woman centric movies are being developed both in Hollywood and outside
industries. However, the journal has identified that, the portrayal of woman does not convey
the real idea of feminism. The study also provides beneficial understanding regarding how to
understand if a film is able to highlight on the core aspects of feminism. Thus this journal
provides a beneficial understanding regarding the way feminism has influenced fashion
industry and how fashion industry in turn has influenced society to a significant extent.
The concept of gender inequality is the most discussed concept of modern society. The
concept of gender inequality is also reflected hugely in the film industry. The outlook of the
society completely bifurcated the feminism factor. Criticism prevailed in the society on the
concept of gender inequality. Even the Hollywood industry saw a drift in providing roles to
the women as the vital aspect in the society. The social structure is immensely dominated by
patriarchal desires and regulations.
The perceptions of critics regarding Hollywood saw a major denial in the field of encroaching
upon the concept of gender equality. There was tremendous turbulence prevailing in the
female society, which resulted in the ignorance in the female workers. The social scenario
that is chiefly characterized by male domination has a core influence in the film industry. Due
to the over emphasize on male characters, women did get a little chance of dreaming about a
prosperous career in the film industry.
The influence of woman in major decision making process used to be considerably low and
this was also evident in the old movies. As woman during the old era used be more
submissive and docile than what they are now, the female characters also used to be
submissive and docile in nature. However, with the flow of time the stories of young girls
waiting for prince charming are becoming meaningless. The roles in the Hollywood went for
the male in the lead roles and the female of the industry were completely bifurcated from the

society. There was tremendous change in the work culture of the society as women
empowerment in the industry was eliminated in the society. The approach of the society
towards the women was completely ignorant which disturbed their lifestyle in the society.
The reason that can be configured from the discussion is of the mindset of the people
prevailing in the society.
The concept of male dominated society was prevalent in Hollywood movies due to the
approach they configured towards the women in the society. The ignorance in the society led
to formation of this gloomy portal of woman in the movies. These are the podium in the field
of shifting the trend from the male dominated to the society of equality and respect in the
society towards the women.
However despite this fast change in the fashion industry as well as in the social scenario, it is
observed that sometimes fashion and films get shifted from the real motto of feminism. The
journal provides a beneficial and critical understanding of this and thus helps in knowing the
other side of the trend of feminism in the fashion society, particularly on film industry.
