1CYBER BULLYING“Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.”The above quoted lines of Theodore Roosevelt clearly indicates the stance which thepeople should take against the various instances of bullying which has become a commonpart of modern society. Bullying can be defined as the unwanted as well as the aggressive useof superior force or power in order to suppress or intimidate an individual or to stop themfrom doing a particular thing (Kowalski et al., 2012). A new form of bullying which isinflicting the world at the present moment is the form of cyber bullying (Hinduja & Patchin,2014). This essay intents to shed light on the concept of cyber bullying, the various causes ofit, its effects and the steps which can be taken to minimize the menace of cyber bullying.Cyber harassment or cyber bullying can be defined as the form of bullying orharassment which entails with the use of the electronic media (Kowalski et al., 2012). It is tobe noted that the present generation depends on the various kinds of electronic media fordiverse purposes like communicating, socializing and others (StopBullying.gov, 2018). It isto be noted that the victims of cyber bullying are not only the teenagers but also the variousadults. In addition to bullying at schools, colleges and various electronic platforms workplacebullying is also a common phenomenon which the majority of the people face. It is to benoted that with the rise in the use of the various social platforms the incidents of cyberbullying is on the rise (Hinduja & Patchin, 2014). According to an estimate around 33% ofthe kids in the age bracket of 13-18 are subjected to incidents of cyber and among themaround 71% of these kids are victims of repeated incidents of cyber bullying (ForbesWelcome, 2018). It is to be noted around 62% of the people in the workplace are subjected toincidents of workplace bullying over the various electronic media channels (ForbesWelcome, 2018). According to a statistics provided by the “2014 General Social Survey onCanadians' Safety”, in Canada “17% of Internet users in this age group said they had beenvictims of cyberstalking or cyberbullying in the previous five years. Nearly 100% of youth

2CYBER BULLYINGaged 15 to 29 were Internet users during that period” (Statcan.gc.ca, 2018). Anotherinteresting fact to note is that “More than one-third were cyberbullied or cyberstalked,compared with 15% of the heterosexual population” (Statcan.gc.ca, 2018). There are severalfactors which have given rise to the various incidents of cyber bullying in the recent times.The primary reason is the desire of the individuals to assert their power as well as influenceover others (Cyberbullying Research Center - How to Identify, Prevent, and Respond, 2018).It is to be noted that the researchers believe that the various perpetrator of cyber bullying arelooking to get rid of their boredom by indulging in incidents of bullying which gives a feelingof pseudo-power over the other individuals. Another cause for the various incidents of cyberbullying is the revenge factor (Cyberbullying Research Center - How to Identify, Prevent,and Respond, 2018). It is to be noted that the majority of the incidents of cyber bullying aremotivated by the factor of revenge. It is normally seen that a common mentality of theperpetrators of the incidents of cyber bullying is the fact that the others are indulging in thevarious incidents of cyber bullying so they also need to indulge in those instances and thusthey resort to such activities. Another common reason is the fact that the various perpetratorsof the incidents of cyber bullying believe that the victims deserve the kind of treatment whichthey are getting at the hands of the perpetrators (Hinduja & Patchin, 2014). It is to be noted that the perpetrators of the various incidents of bullying consider theactivities of theirs to be funny and as a means to pass their boredom (Schneider et al., 2012).However, as the real life instances and the various researches suggest the various acts ofcyber bullying can have severe consequences on the victims. The various acts of bullying notonly impact the confidence level of the victims but also affect the psychology of thepsychology of the victims (Weale, 2018). In severe cases, the victims even become suicidaland develop various kinds of phobias (Weale, 2018). In some cases, the victims even becomeabsent minded and the incidents start taking a toll on the psychology as well as the physical
