ROMANTIC IMAGINATION RESEARCH PAPER TOPIC - DEBUSSY LA MER La mer is masterpieces and innovative art that is composed by French Composer ClaudeDebussy. This master work has been prepared during the years 1903 and 1905. This work hasinitially not received more admiration but with time it has changed. The work for thiscomposition in the 1903 and overall work completed in year 1905. This composition was createdat Grand Hotel Eastbourne on the English Channel cost.La mer is neither a complete departure nor normal symphony but is appealed to largenumber of audiences across globe. Initially this composition was not positively appreciated butwith time mass appeal was gained by it. Inspiration for this master work was gained from rollingwaves of Atlantic and pacific ocean. Along with this idea for this concept was also received fromlocale of Eastbourne on the south coast of great England. Work for this innovative compositionwas completed in year 1905 (Herlin & Bloom, 2014). Paintings that were made on sea alsoinspired Debussy and views and presence near the sea itself inspired him to create this greatmusical work. La mer is considered as most brilliant music work created by him and it is alsoconsidered as supreme achievement in the symphonic literature. Music in Lamer reflects thegreat beauty of ocean and also its delicacy and savagery. Musical languageDebussy has taken the idea for this composition during his visits to the sea. During his childhooddays he used to visit Cannes and later he traveled to Italy. La mer is subtitled as Threesymphonic sketches and it takes the imagination of listener towards this composition. With this,“From dawn to Midday on the sea ” is one of the most admired symphony and it explores thedramatic changes and alterations in lightening and atmosphere that accompany for progression ofthe morning on the water. Likewise, “Dialog of the wind and The sea” reflects urgent andOminous note and through this a person feels close to danger of sea.

(Source- Murai, 2016)The sound of orchestra reflects about triumph, stormy and dazzling elemental forces ofnature. Before a complete build up a moment of calm is reached and the sounds of orchestraheaves and swell in great washes of sound. Along with this “Play of waves” depicts about drawsthe imagination to the sphere of light and motion. It produces sounds of rocking waves and withthis unexpected shift of currents are also mentioned (Murai, 2016). Play of waves also definesabout unexpected shifts in the currents and glint of sunlight on the surfaces of water. Numerousrepresentation of sea have been described in the work of Debussy he has represented the wonderof sea and its magical powers. Sea has played a significant character in final composition of Lamer. First movement is for 9 Minutes and second movement is for 6.30 minutes and lastmovement exists for 8 minutes. Three movements in the masterpiece La mer comprise of :- I.De l’aube à midi sur la mer It reflects (―From dawn to midday on the ocean‖),II.Jeux de vagues It reflects (―Wave play‖) III.Dialogue du vent et de la mer It reflects (―Dialogue of the wind and the sea‖)Illustration 1: La mer
