Recently demographics have changed exceptionally all over the world. The United States has
also experienced these changes. Quality clinical services and better living conditions are evident
improvements which in turn lead to an increased lifespan among individuals. This results in a
shift in demographics since it consequently leads to increased number of older persons in the
society. These changes have significant effects on the demand and supply of healthcare services
which consequently affects the required size of healthcare workforce in the States.
(I) Introduction
Thesis: In the United States, quality clinical services and better living conditions are
evident improvements which in turn lead to an increased lifespan among individuals. This leads
to a shift in demographics leading to great number of an aged population in general and also a
higher percentage of old persons in the workforce. These changes pose significant impacts on the
demand and supply of healthcare services which consequently affects the size of healthcare
workforce in the States.
(II) Effects of the increased lifespan and disease patterns on healthcare system
The increased lifespan among the population means a higher number of aged persons,
whose demand for healthcare services is relevantly high. This is attributed to mainly their
prevalence to contract various chronic diseases and hence a growing disease burden
