Part one: Reflective CPD
Continuous Professional Development is the unremitting procedure of documenting,
developing and maintaining the professional skills (Nasreen, and Odhiambo, 2018). As
guided by (Brisard, et al., 2016), the CPD is a crucial aspect in the professional courses. The
students or professional project managers are required to keep track of the professional and
personal skills to utilize and develop the same in professional practices. According to
Nasreen, and Odhiambo, (2017), the skills associated with CPD could be gained through the
training or courses formally or informally, through the job experiences. The most significant
benefit of maintaining CPD is it keeps knowledge and skills updated (Simpson, et al., 2017).
Moreover, it enables to find out own strength and weakness through self-evaluation and self-
enhancement (Hamilton, 2018). Through the paper, I will critically reflect on my professional
development through the course. I will record my past achievements and experiences and my
current experiences to develop my future career path.
Past and Present Experiences
The first thing that I have learnt in due course is project management is based on the
knowledge, experiences, soft and hard skills of the people in charge of the project.
Preliminarily, I did not have a profound idea regarding project management and a PM and
used to think that Project Managers usually manage a project. With each day passing by, I
learnt that the PMs are liable to plan, initiate, monitor, execute and hand over a project. The
effectiveness of the project is highly dependent on the professional skills and capabilities of a
Project manager. When I started to understand and perceive the roles and responsibilities of
the project managers, I started to identify the crucial skills of the project manager. I learnt
prior to being a licensed project manager; it is to develop the mindset and personal attribute
like a project manager. As per the guidance of the professor, I started to conduct a personal
assessment and record the strengths that foster my skills as a project manager and find out the
weakness that would create a barrier in my future carrier. Through my self-evaluation of 30
days, I found that I am bad at decision making skills and struggle to make instant decisions.
While working with the peers, I used to hesitate to voice my decisions and perspectives
among my team.
Once, in our team assignment, we were struggling to decide the proper strategy which leads
the project to be accomplished within the allocated time. The struggle to make the

appropriate decision of time management and strategy development made me feel that
decision-making skills and time management are the indispensable aspects of effective
project management. Time is one of the project constraints (Lin, Huang, Yeng, and Cho,
2017). If a project is not delivered within the allocated time, the efficiency of the project
outcomes diminishes, project cost increases and it brings adverse impact on the reliability and
image of the project management team (Dhir, Kumar, and Singh, 2019). I started to work on
my time management through prioritizing the tasks, making work schedules and setting up
the deadline of works. The continuous practice of time management made me able to break
the tasks and get each part accomplished with the set deadlines. Communication skills are
crucial in team management and working with peers (Fetters, Guetterman, Scerbo, and Kron,
2018). As per my professor’s guidance, I started to communicate with my peers and share
knowledge and views with the team, which also fostered my rational thinking. Throughout
the course, I learnt the effective way of leading a team, predicting the risks and mitigating the
same through the decision making skills. One of the biggest strength of mine is I am able to
develop the achievable, specific and manageable project goals following the SAMRT
framework. The setting of a SMART goal defines the success of project success (Moore,
2017). Based on the SMART goals, I could easily precede the project and achieve the project
objectives.
Apart from the skills required for project management, I have gained experiences regarding
the present scopes and career opportunities in project management. According to Fasbender,
Wang, Wöhrmann, and Klehe, (2018), career planning is the set of activities conducted with
the aim to achieve the career objectives. The concept of career development has changed over
the years, career development renders to avail a multitude of skills and exercises them in
actual practices. I have experienced that a successful career development involves four key
activities: knowing own strength and weakness, explore career options, focusing on career
scopes and taking actions to utilize the job opportunities.
