Depression and Obesity
Abstract
Depression and obesity are the health conditions among the individuals termed as a
bidirectional condition where one condition increases the chances of causing the other. The two
conditions have a relationship where the development of one condition increases the risk of
another. However, the psychologists have worked to understand the existing mechanisms
between the two conditions depression and obesity (Hiles et al., 2016). Research study has
shown alterations in explaining the genetically background, homeostatic regulations,
neuroendocrine metabolism and mental conditions linking depression and obesity. The study
focuses on addressing future questions by targeting the psychological and medical field
researchers concerning the biological association between depression and obesity (Faith et al.,
2011).
Objectives
The objective of the research study was based on investigating the association between
depression and obesity.
Design
The meta-analysis study design will be used in the statistical analysis and process by
combining various findings from the study.
Participants- A sample of 300 out 500 participants aged between 18-60- years with 100
obese patients with estimate of 35 Body Mass Index (BMI) and 100 participants with
normal estimate weight with BMI approximated from 20-25 and the Beck depression
inventory system measure (BMI) for 100 participants suffering from depression.

Results
Statistical data analysis was done through variance analysis, regression, and correlation.
However, the study findings showed obesity does not cause the development risk for
depression.
Conclusion
In general other research shows the link existing between mental health
depression and obesity condition, but the recent research does not obey the existing
relationship. Therefore, the relationships existing between these mental disorders is not
just an influence of the other but a combination of several facts such as psychosocial,
eating habits, diet, and socio-demographic factors.
Introduction
Obesity is considered as chronic body health illness recording a higher rate of
public health issues in our current society comparing with depression that is preventable
through psychological counselling. Arguably, the research conducted showed that there
is a higher rate of overweight among the adults resulting in alarm on public health
concern (Pan, 2012). The investigation by the research was to determine the existing
associations among depression mental condition and obesity condition of the affected
individuals. Several factors such as health activities, somatic factors and socio-
demographic were explored in the effect of determining the relationship among the
mental depression disorder and obesity condition. However, many discoveries have been
worked upon to come up with the relationship existing in the two conditions arguably;
other health conditions have been linked with complications such as high blood pressure,

higher mortality, and even heart attack diseases
(Faith et al., 2011) asserts that depression is attributed to psychological brain
conditions, while obesity is strongly attributed to poor diet higher level of alcohol
consumption, smoking activities and even the kind of physical activities on the body.
However, it has not been discovered that relationship existing among depression mental
condition and obesity condition prove to show the cause of the other. The study shows
that depression affects both the youth and the adults regardless of their gender.
Consequently, for over 20 years ago obesity is rampantly growing and the development
starts right from the young age associating obesity with other conditions such depression
though not scientifically proven (Marmorstein, Lacono & Legrand, 2014).
Methods
I. Data collection
The data for the analysis was obtained from the sample of 500 participants through a
survey that targeted the adolescents, middle and older age patients from the various
public and home health centres (Lasserre et al., 2014). Longitudinal study for depression
and obesity was conducted by medical schools. 300 patients were randomly chosen to
respond to the survey questions, where 100 patients were affected by depression, 150
suffered from obesity and 50 suffered from obesity and depression. Face to face method
was used for a personal interview for gathering the data. Medical equipment used such as
stadiometer and soft tape measure was used for measuring the physical heights, the
weight of the patients (Elboudwares, 2016).
II. Measures- The following measures were taken in collection of data; demographic
