Week 1
Here, tutor has discussed about the subject that is design lab experience in which large
scale design projects. The course is not related to only one discipline but to all disciplines.
Moreover, tutor is telling about some wicked problem. It refers to a problem that exists in society
but does not have any particular solution. So, topic discussed in it will be “The city” of Brisbane
or Gold Coast. It is the first week in which tutor has described about different types of
assessment that has to be done. The tutor has mentioned that there are three parts of assignment.
So, initially I only got insight on what type of assessment will be and what we have to do in it.
Assignment 1 is individual mid point presentation during week 6, assignment 2 is process journal
in week 12 and last is group design project during week 11.
So, week 1 was only overview about subject and what we are going to learn in class.
Hence, there was nothing mentioned about further studies and topics.
Week 2
In this week it has been described about a global view of cities designed as a system. It is
necessary to design a city in such a way that it shape our lives. So, ARUP is global consultancy
firm that design cities and shape our future (Albiol and et.al., 2017). There are many experienced
scientist, anthropologist, architects, etc. are working and has designed large urban projects. There
are three types of systems which are commonly used such as natural, socio technical and in large
complex systems. These systems are integrate both system and results in developing wicked
problems. It may be related to design of loop holes of pollution.
In report of IPCC urban policy there is rise in 1.5 degree Celsius on global warming in
urban cities. So, it requires rapid advancement in society to navigate system such as land, energy,
etc. Urbanisation is multi sector project in which designer play a crucial role. Basically, there are
five systems in cities that are waste, food, energy water and transport. The first socio technical
system was designed through artefacts and processes. This have an insight on things related to
how systems are built. Furthermore, complex system is to be designed in such a way that
outcomes are attained.
From above lecture I learned about how a city is designed and what processes or system
is followed. Also, I was able to identify various consultancies who are engaged in developing
cities system. Moreover, I came to conclusion that it is necessary to design cities in such a way
that system such as land, energy, etc. integrate with one another. I gained knowledge about

various system required in project. In cities system as well process are included. They may be
related to reducing waste, utilising energy, etc. At initial level it was difficult for me to
understand things but with practical example I got to know things easily. The lecture enabled me
to learn things and apply it in future. However, I was able to explore cities urban project in wide
area. At initial stage it becomes crucial to evaluate design of city so that proper system can be
formed. However, I analyzed that sometimes design can be made easy. I got to know what local
and national issues Australian cities are facing. Also, how our lives is shaped through system
design.
Week 3
In this week it has been discussed about Australian city in general. Here, it is described
about certain challenges that Australia is facing (Malik and et.al., 2017). In future country will
have to rapidly adapt as compared to past in order to keep pace up. Furthermore, advancement in
technology such as AI, automation, etc. will change economic context of country. Beside this,
biodiversity loss across globe is also a major concern for Australia. Alongside it, nation is facing
domestic concern as well such as economic dependence on natural resources, growing in old age
people, economic benefits are unequal, etc. Moreover, many educational universities are not
performing in effective way as compared to other countries. The outlook vision 2019 described
vision of different sector like land, energy, culture, etc. In this there are 3 main goals mentioned
to be accomplish. They are planning for multi centre cities, creating capital hubs and diversify
housing and land dues in both capital lands. In addition nation is require to improve their
transport infrastructure. They must promote walking and cycling option to people. Here, city lab
refers to working with society to understand future challenge and work with them to resolve it.
In this lecture I learned about various challenges Australia is facing and how their socio
and economic landscape will modify in near future. Also, I was able to know about other things
such as loss of biodiversity due to which nation is facing problems. They have to face both
global and local issues such as rise in old age, use of natural resources, etc which I think is main
issue for country biodiversity. I learned about my assessment course of Australian outlook
vision. It was easy for me to learn and gain knowledge on various aspects (Pinto, Maria Rita, and
Serena Viola 2016). At last I got to know about what city lab means and how it can be support in
engaging with community and finding out future issues. So, with help of it issue can be identified
ad solved. Thus, each city is required to have city lab which analyzes problem and take measures

to solve it. In my view it also provide report regarding what changes can be done. The current
issues are determined in society and solved. Here, I also got to know that Australian cities needs
to make huge improvements in their system.
Week 4
Here, two of Australia cities are focused on that is Brisbane and gold coast. For both the
reports are formed that is Gayle report and go beyond horizon. Yen gayle developed gayle report
and is inter disciplinary design practice of many other cities. He stated that Brisbane is having
high urban development with fast growing cities in world. The report summarise some of
findings given by gayle is that less focus on driving and alternatives related to it. He asked for
people oriented city and improved connectivity with smart technologies. Also, to link public
transport with quality public round, improved condition for walking cycling, etc.
For gold coast go beyond horizon report it state to look back what city looks like in 21st
century. There were several aspects taken into consideration that are population, economic social
and cultural change, etc. So, on that basis design friction of Gold coast was developed.
Therefore, a complete explanation was provided with help of diagram.
I found that in this week it is describe about two cities of Australia. On both of them
reports are formed based on design fictions. So, I was able to know difference between two city
reports and how their design varies from one another (Isik, Hakan, and Muhammet Mustafa
Alpaslan 2018). However, I identified how both Australian cities are rapidly developing in future
and what changes are required in system and processes. I gained knowledge on design of smart
city and urbanisation which as useful for me to explore it and find out outcomes. Furthermore,
the lecture taught me that why it is vital to have different in design of cities so that proper
outcomes are attained. The tutor also described about major changes that has occurred in 21st
century in cities of Brisbane and gold coast. It gave me insight on 10 years change of two cities
and their urbanisation. This enabled me to get understanding about findings of both cities and
changes that has occurred. I analyzed reports in critical way to compare results with one another.
I understood how by looking back at past years cities future design is developed. It enables in
finding out issues and solving it. Also, on basis of that projects can be developed.

Week 5
The week starts by providing information about design brief. It is intent to start project
between client and consultant in efficient manner. With help of it, a conversation occurs
regarding project and client.
Also, there are different elements of design brief which are to be considered before starting a
project. By this it becomes easy to communicate about goals of project mentioned in brief. It
enables in providing an attractive and unique design of project. Moreover, the importance of
design brief is it serves as suggestion during project. Usually, design brief emphasis on style and
sustainability (Lundmark, Sofia 2019). The stylists’ point of view must be taken into
consideration during design brief. However, it is important to have an attractive design. There
are two ways of design brief that are brief to you and second is brief from you. In brief to you it
can be either from client side, design contest, open tender brief, etc. Whereas in brief from you
the design brief can be self driven, return brief or participation.
Here, annotated bibliography plays vital role. It shows how references are been used in
project.
Here, I learned in depth about design brief and its purpose. Also, I got to know why it is
important to consult with client regarding design brief. So, it was easy for me to understand
components of brief. Beside this, I got to know ways of design brief that is one to you and other
is from you. They contain various types of design briefs that differ from one another.
Furthermore, I gained information that how design briefs are used and a sample of design brief.
It included certain things such as project title, team, background, etc. Also, at last there is
annotated bibliography which is reference of overall project. So, I learned use of bibliography
and how it is used in large paragraph of project. Apart from it, what sources are used as reference
in bibliography. I was shown an example of design brief report as cities play children. Here, I got
to know how brief report is designed by designers. It contained visuals, diagrams, images, etc.
communicate about report. Therefore, things were described in detail in report. In this way I
learned in lecture about several new things of design brief.
Week 7
The lecture is all about understanding everyday life design through observation. By
understanding or observing behaviour of people we draw attention of needs, wants of people.
The observation is of as much as user as of you (Donetto and et.al., 2015). So, anthropology is

field related to observing people behaviour. In past anthropology was much more objective field
but now it is subjective one. Designers use fnography to design products, services, etc. within
community and culture. In book written by Jan chipchase it is written about planning required n
fieldwork, managing risk, mapping methods, etc. In waste there is a point of tension which is
good. Furthermore, psychogeological mapping is used to map a city. In book image of the city
the man emotional response to physical environment. There is difference between situationist
and urban geographers. The situationist mapped in highly subjective way using rigid and
scientific approach. In present times designers use psychogeographic mapping to understand how
people perceive environment in which they live in. The four ways of experiencing space enabled
to observe other people experience.
So, I learned a lot of branch of science that is anthropology. I know that in what way social
behaviour of people in past and present including cultural norms, beliefs, ethics, etc. are studied.
I evaluated that there are many things we need to observe such as workers, design of parking
systems, shelters, information, etc. I learned 4 ways of experiencing space in field trip that are
senses, memory in place, regulation and physical interaction. With first one I know about feeling
sense of other stimuli. Memory in place means how we put or intervene historical memory. I
gained skills of interacting with people via digital technology. I came to conclusion that
regulations are policies, signs, etc. which might constraint our movements. Thus, I was able to
identify history of anthropology and how scholars, designers, etc. did mapping of cities. I
evaluated purpose of mapping cities. Furthermore, I got those basic learning on how behaviour
of people showcases their needs. Why it is necessary to observe people in daily life and what
reflects their behaviour. Thus, the main concept I learned was design of city developed by
scholars, geologist, etc. by understanding people behaviour. Hence, it made it easy to observe
things closely and identify reasons of why there is change is people behaviour.
Week 8
In this week 8 lecture tutor has described about different types of pop ups used by
designers. The most common way is to go mobile or pop up design experience. In that there are
various other studios as well like virtual, pop up shop, in house, community pop ups, etc. In each
one there is different thing required to be included (Han, Kyonghee, and Moonhee Choi. 2018).
Pop up shops are most popular in recent times. It helps in creating shirt term impact on society
and offering services to public. The pop up in house shows workshops designed for students by

institutes, museum, cultural centre, etc. Moreover, in community pop up there are different issue
raised of local community. These all mobile design used by designers. In Atlanta city community
pop up was set up. Similarly, in London cloud architecture was set up for mapping space. It uses
user fieldwork for offering services by corporate. Now, many new things has emerged in way as
pop ups. The designers are using it as way to create an impact on society. It has highly
influenced people behaviour and raised crucial issues to be solved.
I realised that there are various types of pop ups which is used by designers. I learned that
in virtual studio are base camps that can be used as project management tools. The next thing I
learned is pop up shop such as Nike or adidas. I faced difficulty in learning all these as I was not
having any knowledge related to it. But I learned certain things of designers use of pop ups. I
gained knowledge of features and examples of pop ups used by designers. So, I understood it
with examples and relate it with designer view of point to engage with people. However, I got to
know that museums, conference, etc. are things through which communities are interacted. Here,
I came to conclusion that it is important to highlight community issues so that it can be solved.
The best example taken is in US where community pop up was set up. I got to identify
importance of pop ups in community and how it supports in solving issue or interacting with
people to determine their needs. Hence, I learned a lot of things related to pop ups used by
designer. It allows me to use that skills in my next assessment.
Week 9
The week is about repairing or making things as designer. Here, it is explained about book
known as The art of motorcycle maintenance (Müller and et.al., 2015). In this it is described
about how father and son maintained motorcycle in 17 days trip in California. Possessing
knowledge is not enough to repair anything but it also requires to have feeling of quality of work.
It supports in moving forward. In addition it is described that there is nothing as object or subject
but the thing we experience in this world. There are some philosophies discussed as well like
Buddhism, Japanese, western, etc. They all are connected to each other. The reality is not static
which means it is not based on set of ideas. Moreover, reality is not static but dynamic in nature.
The use of technology has broken down object into subjects making it easy to understand it.
Technology is placed at ready to hand making flow of system. In lecture it is also described on
augmented reality with humans. It is known as phenomenon experience of humans going on. In

order to understand real world, the first thing that is done is to identify how subject is related to
object.
I learned about book and how motorcycle is repaired. Also, I got to know different between
object and reality. Now I realised that with experience it becomes easy to understand things.
There is no role of object and subject in it. However, I was able to gain knowledge on
philosophies of various religions. It gave me insight on that reality is not static but dynamic.
There is vital role of subject and object in reality. But I have to use experience of things which
will support me in understanding. I got to know examples of philosophers, authors, etc. I
analyzed that we are fragile humans that can be easily threatened. In outside world, nature
control us. But we use it as subject or resource and exploit it. At last I learned on craft and
craftsmen that how it is related to crafting (Parappilly and et.al., 2018). However, by getting
view of philosophies I realised its role on reality. Now, I emphasis on experience of events rather
than on subject. I concluded that there are some process which is not object but are nourished for
satisfaction.
