INTRODUCTION
Health & safety is an important aspect which should be focussed by care professionals while
dealing with patients to deliver medical facilities with satisfaction. It includes evaluating relevant
risk factors to formulate effective strategies to make sure about security of an individual at the
time of treating their respective health issue (Hui, Charlebois and Sun, 2018). In context of this
project, it is based on the Royal Brompton Hospital which is known to be largest specialist heart
and lung medical centre in United Kingdom. It was founded in the year around 1847, almost 173
years ago which is managed by Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust. This
assignment will focus on legislative framework and policies related to safety and risk
management. It will also include the understanding of balance between risk and rights improve
practices along with procedures of risk management. The areas related to risk management
policies needs improvement and relevant recommendations to make appropriate changes are
given below.
MAIN BODY
1.1 Explain the legislative framework for health, safety and risk management in the work setting
Health, safety and risk management are interlinked with each other that should be considered at
work place in every organisation. It includes the criterion of evaluating risk factors and make
strategies to avoid them which facilitate to improve safety and ensure better health status. It is
necessary for organisations to follow the legal regulations related to health safety at work place
to make sure security of staff as well as clients respectively. In context of Royal Brompton
Hospital, it has been analysed that they should follow health and safety regulations and policies
to manage safety of employees which are given here.
The health and safety at work Act 1974 includes the guidelines for organisations to establish
effective practices and procedures to make sure health and safety along with conducting risk
management in proper manner. It includes to guidelines about specific aspects related to safety
and risk management which are required to be considered at the time of ensuring safety of people
(Slemon, Jenkins and Bungay, 2017). Meanwhile, it can be considered as package of six
regulations which should be specifically followed in Royal Brompton Hospital. It includes
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Provision and use of work
equipment regulations 1998, Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, Workplace (Health,

Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, Personal Protective Equipment at Work regulations !992
and Health and safety (Display screen Equipment) Regulations 1992.
In addition to this, it is observed that all the legislation related to health and safety should be
used in Royal Brompton Hospital to make sure about safety as well as proper risk management.
It includes Chemicals (hazards information & packaging for supply) regulations 2002, Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002, Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous
occurrences regulations 2013, Transport of Dangerous goods (safety advisers) Regulations 1999

under Health and safety at Work Act in order to conduct different clinical processes and
activities carefully. Basically, it includes number of policies of carefully handling of equipment
and follow ethics with patients to deal with them in appropriate manner. It will provide support
to manage all the requirements related to health, safety as well as risk management accordingly.
Meanwhile, Royal Brompton Hospital has several policies and practices that are used for
managing risk factors and ensure safety of staff and clients which are mentioned here. Initially, it
is includes the criterion of making arrangements in terms of implementing the health & safety
measures determined as essential by carrying out risk assessment (Khan and et. al., 2016).
Secondly, it is necessary to appoint competent individuals (often themselves or company
colleagues) in order to help them for applying the arrangements respectively. Thirdly, it involves
the practice of setting up emergency procedures and render clear data as well as training for staff

complications and favourable for delivery of better quality of care for making patients disease
free. Meanwhile, it consist the utilisation of conducting raining procedures in order to improve
clinical skills and knowledge level which facilitates to make accurate decision of providing
desired treatment in effective manner (Kaassis and Badri, 2018). It includes the criterion of
evaluating actual needs of learning and improvement to prepare learning programs for employees
regarding maintenance of health and safety. However, it consist the learning to carry out risk
management by following appropriate policies to deliver effective care for wellness of people in
Royal Brompton Hospital.
2.3 Explain the actions to take when health, safety and risk management, procedures and
practices are not being complied with
The practices related to health, safety and risk management are required to be considered by
organisations by encouraging employees to do the same. It includes the criterion of making strict
policies and practices for staff members so that they should follow safety procedures in order to
maintain secure environment at workplace which is favourable for them as well as their clients.
However, it is required to establish the provision of strong punishments and penalties for
employees and take strict action against the workers who avoid to follow safety measures. It is
necessary to establish motivational sessions to make staff understand the importance of
considering safety policies for their own security at work place and maintain safe atmosphere for
patients. Moreover, it will impact positively on performance level and satisfaction of clients in
terms of becomes wellbeing.
In addition to this, it has been identified that Royal Brompton Hospital has policy of make
penalties according to severity of irresponsible behaviour of staff regarding work place safety. It
includes the criterion of suspension for specific duration of period for medical staff as per
particular clinical safety breach which helps to encourage other workers to follow security
measures in effective manner (Tepaskoualos and Chountalas, 2017). It consists the way
terminating medical staff if they have attempted some illegal and clinical wrong aspect which
has major impact on patient condition. Meanwhile, it is observed that Royal Brompton Hospital
has provision to provide professional warning letters or report the wrong attempt in clinical
settings to authorised organisation who has worked for ensuring safety of people at work place. It

consider safety measures and relevant guidelines for improving the condition respectively.
4.3 Evaluate own practice in promoting a balanced approach to risk management

comprehension respectively. Moreover, it will facilitates to increase the effectiveness of clinical
performance of employees in Royal Brompton Hospital which impact positively on respective
outcomes.
On the other hand, it has been evaluated that balanced approach is connected to risk management
because it is favourable to provide appropriate teaching about the same to employees. It is
helpful to make staff understand about the way of dealing with risk factors in order to avoid their
negative effects. Basically, it is necessary for providing knowledge related to appropriate codes
of conduct, quality standards, and national standards of care and safety measures to staff
members (Shkrum and Kent, 2016). Meanwhile, it is favourable to encourage employees to
follow clinical procedures and policies effectively in terms of reducing relevant hazards at work
place. The balanced approach is beneficial in respect for determining risk factors along with
managing the same for delivering better quality of care. It will facilitate to avoid the complicated

treatment, right to informed consent, right to privacy & confidentiality, right to information, right

right to medical records. The consideration of patients right is helpful to improve the
effectiveness of treatment decision making in respect of gaining increased patient outcomes.
Moreover, it will impact positively on clinical procedure of providing care services and
medications to people for making the disease free respectively.
5.2 Evaluate the health, safety and risk management policies, procedures and practices within the
work setting
In context of Royal Brompton Hospital, it has been analysed that risk management policies and
procedures were established by considering important factors to deliver appropriate care
facilities for welfare of individuals. It includes the set of number of policies which are required
to be followed by staff members of selected organisation for managing safety concerns and risk
management. However, it is necessary for providing learning to employees about safety practices
for managing the risk factors in more effective as well as efficient manner (Alston, 2017). It

principles, rights of clients, legislation and codes of conduct for maintain safety factor of patients
in Royal Brompton Hospital. Meanwhile, it consist the some of the areas related to safety and
protection in selected organisation that are required to be improved in which some of the
explained here.
Advanced technology: The technology plays an important role to monitor everything happened
in patient wards to take immediate actions for protection of them. It is required to provide some
advance technical equipment to patient so that they can call help quickly in their wards in Royal
Brompton Hospital. However, it is required to set a device for patient with mental health
problem having episodes of memory loss so that they can be identified quickly to provide
medication on time (Zarrin and Azadeh, 2019). Advanced equipment and software should be
used to monitor patient to protect them from attempt of self-harm attempt.

enhance the effectiveness of clinical procedures and practices in order to deliver appropriate care

some of changes should be made in regards to safety policies, practices and procedures in Royal
Brompton Hospital for which effective recommendations are given below.
It has been recommended that supervisor and management should consider regular training
sessions in order to update the knowledge of employees about management of risk to gain better
outcomes. It includes the criterion of providing appropriate information about updated codes of
conduct, developed effective clinical practices, ethics and updated legislation to deliver accurate
care facilities by managing safety factor for patients. However, it is necessary to increase
effectiveness of safety procedures by providing desired care services.
It has been suggested that innovative and advanced technology is required to be used in case of
patient suffering from severe psychological problems having symptoms of memory loss and self-
harm. It will provide support to nursing staff for monitoring such patient easily which is
favourable in case of client who has violent behaviour and aggressive nature due to specific
mental disorder (Engemann and Engemann, 2017). However, use of advanced technology is
suitable for protecting them from severe injuries related to attempt of self-harm or suicide by
them.

It has been recommended that escalation system should be used in Royal Brompton Hospital
which is favourable to provide complaint of client directly to high authority which impact
positively to sort out safety issues as well as other complaints of patient which increase their
comfort level for gaining satisfaction of care facilities. However, the increase of comfort level is
favourable to gain cooperating of patients which impact positively to remain calm and never
harm themselves which impact positively on treatment outcomes respectively. Moreover, the
escalation system is an important factor in terms of maintaining safety of patients and manages
relevant risks as well.
CONCLUSION
From the above project, it has been concluded that health and safety can be defined as managing
the risk and hazards for avoiding relevant injuries and incidents. It is necessary to follow the
relevant regulation of health and safety at work Act in order to carry out clinical operation in
more secure manner. However, it is essential to make an individual wellbeing with the help of
providing more effective as well as efficient treatment services along with maintaining safety
factor via conduction risk management in appropriate way.
