Introduction
The following report presents a personal assignment portfolio. My professional
competencies and learnings would be analysed and evaluated subsequently. My personal
strengths and weaknesses are assessed to understand my development needs in the professional
field. In this report I reflect on my understanding of leadership and management. In doing so I
assess my own leadership and management qualities. I utilize various models to develop an
effective understanding of the core concepts. Subsequently, I undertake a personal development
plan to provide an understanding of how I would develop myself in the professional sphere.
Moving forward I have analysed some of the most important aspects that are related to
management and leadership. These are supportive communication, motivation, empowerment,
conflict management and team effectiveness. These are the concepts that are much important in
the context of professional development in any corporate sector. I have also undertaken my
personal SWOT analysis and completed the skills audit template to enhance my self-evaluation.
The systematic development of the reflective report would help to develop better knowledge of
my own competencies and weaknesses. Subsequently, these can be addressed to make the most
of the future opportunities.
Task 1: Understanding personal competencies and development needs
Management and leadership skills analysis
Effective personal and professional development can be achieved by developing both
management and leadership skills within oneself. Irrespective of the roles I would be provided in
my organization, it would be important for me to develop essential leadership and management
outlooks. According to me leadership refers to the action of leading others in any organization.
Management is related to the controlling or dealing with various people or things (Peck and
Hogue 2018). Despite their apparent simple meanings, both management and leadership are very
difficult and complex factors that determine organizational success.
In order to further analyse my leadership and management skills, I would utilize the
Gibbs reflective cycle model. The model is based on a cycle that in the order to progress consist
of description, feeling, evaluation, analysis, and conclusion and action plan.
Firstly, I need to describe my experiences as a student in the course. Previously, I was
unaware of various intrinsic elements that were related to leadership and management. However
as a part of the course I learnt about both these aspects, both theoretically and practically. The
group assignments given to us were important in developing significant knowledge of both these
concepts. Secondly, the group activities helped me to feel good through teamwork. At the same
time I felt that there were people who could only be efficient if they were led properly.
Moreover, I felt more comfortable while telling my peers what needed to be done in various
situations. This was important for me in developing further learning about leadership and
management. Thirdly. I evaluated my own management skills. I differentiated between how a
manager and a leader works (Peck and Hogue 2018). I evaluated my personal strengths and
weaknesses to know more about myself with respect to these two roles. Fourthly, upon analysing
by management and leadership skills, I found that I was more effective as a leader. This is
