Response to Question no 1
All the business organisations, in Australia have to adhere to guidelines while managing
their corporations relating to environmental guidelines. All businesses have their role in
managing the environment. The Federal state and the local governments jointly administer the
laws governing environmental issues. The Department Of Environment has laid down the
Environment Protection and Biodiversity conservation or the EPBC Act which guides business
organizations with the norms that are to be followed to operate in Australia. The regional
authorities have specific Acts that define how environmental management has to be done.
The legislation of the New South Wales will be discussed here for understanding the
environmental management in NSW with respect to impact of hazardous wastes, emissions, and
other pollutants that contribute to environmental degradation. The regulatory body in NSW is the
Environmental protection Authority or the EPA1 which has brought certain laws into effect to
maintain the environmental standards and protect the environment.

The major act is “The Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 or
the POEO Act and is instrumental in environment protection legislation in NSW
which is administered by the EPA. The Act enables the government to penalize
and impose restriction if the guidelines are not maintained. The POEO Act
provided protection to the environmental policies or PEPs through
environmental protection licensing, regulation of Scheduled and Non
Scheduled activities, and granting licenses2. The POEO Act allows the EPA to
send Environment Protection Notices which include Clean up Notices,
Prevention Notices and Prohibition Notices. The EPA incurs penalties for
Offences related to environmental protections. The offences are classified into
various Tiers, based on the degree of offences committed. Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier
3 are the various tiers and penalties are imposed based on the level of the
offence.
The act also requires business organisations to report or notify pollution
incidents and prepare environmental audits. These corporations are also
required to prepare and implement pollution incident response management
plans.

Response to question no. 2a
According to the advertisement by the Hotel, it is a form of Green Washing since no proofs or
reports have provided to support their claim of their environment friendliness. This is unethical
and does not adhere to laws of the consumer forum. The strategy of the organisation simply
emphasizes an eco-friendly program but does not provide evidence of their business practices.
This is completely a case of Green Washing3.
Response to Question no. 2b
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission protects the consumers form
misleading or misguiding done by business organisations in order to promote their growth.
According to ACCC, businesses are not allowed to make statements that are incorrect or present
an incorrect fact or are designed to create a false impression4. Consumers are allowed to make a
complaint against the company or the organisation that are claiming or representing false facts.
These organisations are then penalized if found guilty and the companies would have to repay a
fine back to the company.

Response to Question no. 3a
According to the department of Environment and Australia, carbon offset is an activity
that promotes reduction of the carbon output generated by a company by investing in a
programme or a project that is aimed at reduction of carbon outputs. Thus the main objective is
to balance the net green house emissions of an industry to zero. The process involves reduction
of Carbon emissions as much as possible and balance out the remaining emission by investing in
a program that is reducing carbon footprint. This exchange of carbon footprint is known as the
Carbon offset programme5.

The results of this programme can be distributed and reported back to the stakeholders
and the shareholders by providing quantitative reports of the amount of carbon footprint that had
been reduced due to the offsets programme and the way this carbon offset exchange has helped
in reducing the impacts of the industry in the environment.

Sustainability can be defined as the practice that promotes development and growth without
compromising with the environment. Sustainability is in fact the simultaneous growth and
development of the humans along with the environment. It also promotes prevention of these
resources for the future generations and using the natural resources responsibly, to create
sustainable world. The three main pillars of Sustainability include environmental factors,
economic factors, and social factors.
Response to Question no. 5
Carbon Trading refers to the trading of emission rights. According to the United Nations
Framework for Climate Convention introduced the idea of Carbon Trading on the basis of The
Kyoto Protocol, which states that countries can trade their limits of emitting carbon di oxide. The
countries those will have credits and trading can be done by the countries who would require to
produce carbon emission but is left without any credits6. These countries can trade extra credits
from nations who have not used or would not require such amount of credits. The countries those
who do not produce carbon emission or are carbon neutral can also trade their credits with the
nations in need to carbon credits.

Response to Question no. 6
Ecological footprint relates to the human activities that increase the carbon content of the world.
The ways we can reduce the ecological footprint of an organization can be discussed as follows:
Example: 1
Introducing Car Pooling or Common transport, for the employees thereby, reducing the vehicular
emissions contributed by the staffs. This will reduce the number of vehicles used, and taking off
car from the road will contribute greatly on an annual basis7.
Example: 2
Introducing recycling of resources, for example Porcelain mugs or cups can be introduced
instead of disposable cups which will reduce the amount of daily waste generated. This will also
reduce the carbon footprint altogether.
Example: 3
Introducing Energy Efficient appliances, this would contribute in reducing the total energy
consumption. Switching to LED lamps over CFL or Tungsten lamps can bring effective changes.
Simultaneously increasing green spaces within the office can reduce the necessity of air coolers
and purifiers eventually contributing in reducing the ecological footprint of the organisation.
Response to Question no. 7
The Green office Initiative is programme introduced by the Australian Green House Office in
association with other energy associations. This initiative promotes the sustainable use of
resources in the office to reduce the impact on the environment. The programme encourages

introduction of energy saving or “Green Office” appliances to reduce the energy consumption in
offices8.
Initiatives as an IBIS Officer
As an IBIS Officer the most important change I would like to introduce is to switch to
power saving lamps in the property. The hotel uses several decorative and industrial lamps,
which if converted to energy saving lamps can lead to a huge reduction of energy. Secondly
introducing energy saving air conditioners in the property in order to curb down the energy
consumption will also align with the green office programme9.

Example 1:
The organisation ACM Parts have been contributing greatly towards sustainable business
growth. ACM Parts are a company that is engaged in offering automotive parts as an alternative
to sourced parts. The business has recovered 35 million kilograms of steel, in the last 4 years and
has prevented lead release to the environment. They have won the coveted Australian Business
Awards 2018 for sustainability. Seven of the eight facilities are credited with a green stamp by
Sate Motor Trade association10.

Example 2
Fauna drop down structures made by ACCIONA and Ferrovial led to their winning of the
sustainability awards at the Australian Sustainability Awards. The company has dedicated itself
towards sustainable construction which would reduce the impact on the environment. The Drop
down structures for Fauna cultivation are one of the finest examples of sustainable
construction11.
