INTRODUCTION
Employee development can be defined as a process in which employees with the support
of their employers undergoes various training programs in order to increases their skills and
knowledge. This study will show the importance of interpersonal and transferable skills such as
technical, time management, problem solving and communication skills (Pfau-Effinger, 2017). A
nurse has various strengths and weaknesses. In order to remove those weaknesses it makes
personal development plan which helps them to identify the areas in which it requires improving.
TASK 1
Reflection
There are various skills which is important for developing a career in nursing and for an
individual to have in their professional life. It includes those skills which can be transferred from
one job to an another. There are various skills which are my strengths and can help me out in my
career and in the future (Morrison, 2016). Communication skills, team working, problem solving
skills, computer literate with having proper knowledge of word, excel and internet and time
management are skills that are included in transferable skills. Interpersonal skills also can help
me in the future. I have some strengths and weaknesses as I have some interpersonal skills and
transferable skills.
Team working skills means to have the ability to work in a group and with any type of
people. As a nurse I have team working skills and I can work in a group with other nursing staff.
These skills can help me in my career. I can easily achieve my goals it can also reduce the errors
and mistakes in the work. With the help of this strength I can develop and improve my
relationship with doctors, nursing staff and patients as well which is very important for being in a
working environment for long run. It creates a strong and friendly environment which can lead
productivity and efficiency of the hospital. With this skill I can help and support doctors as I can
manage a team for cares in different shifts. I can effectively manage personal affairs like making
doctor's appointments, social events and family gathering.
Personal motivation is other main important skill. I am lack in this skill. It is my
weakness that I do not have the ability to motivate others as I can not motivate myself first. For
doing any type of work with ease it is essential to have personal and self motivation skill. It can
create various problems in my nursing career. There are several benefits and by developing this

skill I can achieve my goals and get success in my professional as well as in personal life. Self
motivation is the main key skill by which I can improve and develop myself and can also achieve
whatever I want to achieve.
Communication skills also play a vital role in an individual life. Communication skills
includes active listening, confidence, empathy, friendliness etc. I have an effective
communication skills. It is my strength which makes me able at hospitals to listen each and every
details of patients and doctors carefully. It shows my confidence level to listener. It shows them
that I have the vast knowledge about particular topic which can build trust. This skill makes me
able to pass all the necessary informations to other people. With the help of this skill I can
improve my relationship with doctors, patients and my colleagues. By understanding their views
and opinion I can help them out in solving problems. The ability to listen makes me able at
hospitals and at my workplace to being calm in all type of situations. It also reduces the chances
of conflicts. Communication skill also help me out in decision making process as it removes
misunderstanding and creates clarity of thoughts and expression. So there is an importance to
have this skill.
Time management skills also play a vital role in the field of nursing. I am good in
managing time and provide treatment to patients on the time. Without having this skill patients
have to suffer from many problems if nurses and doctors do not provide them treatment on the
time. With the help of this skill I can review patients' care plan, manage doctors appointments &
other appointments like district nurse. As I have worked as a child carer in a royal family. For
that I needed to prepare their meals and monitor their daily nutritional intake on time, This time
management skills made me able to get success and provide better services to children. With the
help of this skill I made children able to keep healthy by organizing outdoor activities for them.
Interpersonal skills also play a significant role in an individual life. This includes those
skills which an individual requires every day while interacting with other person. There are some
skill which I posses and that is my strengths. Patience, active listening and flexibility are some
skills which can help me in my future and career. On the other hand I lack in some skill and I
need to improve that skills such as: dependability and influencing skills.
I have flexibility skill which make me able to adapt new things, new situations and
changes without getting effected. With the help of this skill I can make myself able to work in
any type of situation at any time. I can work even under pressure without hurting myself and

without getting frustrated. As a nurse I have this skill which helps me out to solve problems
related to patients on the time. I try to do all the work on time and reduce procrastination. This
strength make me differ from my staff as I can take more responsibilities and do more at work.

keep patients and other staff healthy and calm in different types of situations.
Dependability is other main important interpersonal skill which make a person able to
produce consistent work. This type of people get to work on time. I lack in this skill and I need to
remove this weakness by improving this skill. Due to lack of this skill I miss the deadline of
work. I can work under pressure and also can do any type of work but for that somewhere I
require guidance of my seniors. I think without having proper guidance and leading I can not
treat patients and also can not provide appropriate treatments to them. It also decreases the
chances of taking various opportunities. By developing this skill I can make other able to
cooperate with others and with us.
Influencing others is also an effective skill which a person need to posses in order to
make get the work done from other in an effective manner. It is the ability to influence other
without formal authority. In nursing, I have several strengths as I can work on the basis of
guidance, work in a team, manage my time but can not influence others. It is my weakness that I
can not influence others which can create various problems in my professional life. For
improving this skill I need to learn to behave in ways that offers the initiative to change. The way
of interacting with other nurses, doctors, compounder can also impact on our personal
relationship. For influencing others it is important for me as a nurse to focus on building
relationship. The most important element of influencing others is credibility.
All these skills make me able to work well in a team and to communicate effectively with
friends, family, patients, doctors and colleagues. I have some weaknesses also and I need to

which are barriers for me, I can develop and make my self able to adapt all types of situations.
There are other various skills which are required for nurses in order to manage works of
hospitals and provide better treatments to patients like Technical skills and computer literate and
having proper knowledge of word, excel and accessing internet. Technical skills and adaptability
skills are very important skills which can helps an individual in their career. Technical skills play
a vital role in nursing field. It is required for performing a specific task like knowledge of
programming language, mechanical techniques, knowledge of excel, word etc. By having word
and excel knowledge I can make list of total number of patients, appointments of doctors etc. As
I nurse it is important to make an effective use of internet on daily basis. With this skill I can
easily review data about past and current health situation & plan of care on the electronic health
records. This strength also makes me able to access clinical knowledge like nursing assessments,
drug informations, nursing best practice guidelines etc.
There is also requirement of having attention to details skill in nursing. Unfortunately I
lack in this skill as I can work if someone guides me but I think I do not give proper attention on
details. There are several things which need to be documented in their patient's charts. For
providing better services it is important for them to listen closely to their patients' description of
symptoms and also to ask right questions in order to bring medication to appropriate times.
Adaptability is other main important skills. It is my strength as I can adapt situations and
make them in my favour. There are various types of uncertainties happen. There are various
internal and external factors which impacts on the performance of leader. As a nurse I posses this
skill which helps me in my professional and in my personal life. It is my ability to fit in all types
of situations. Situations changes in workplace quickly and when a nurse do not have the ability
to adapt situations then they likely to left behind. It decreases opportunity to being in a
competition. It also makes me able to achieve my determined goals by performing the best in the
new situations. For adaptability skill, there is a requirement of an individual to have higher level
of emotional intelligence. It provides the greater job satisfaction over the long term. Adaptability
skill includes decision making skills, self management skills, patience, positive thinking etc.
Being positive and calm in all types of situations make me able to achieve respect from patients
and in making effective decision. It also allows me to use the power of optimism. Adaptable and
positive skill are crucial for dealing in every type of situations.

and achieve objectives. Strong work ethics play a significant role as it shows the behaviours of
an individual. The way of treating and behaving patients ethically is important because it
increases their morale and loyalty. Work ethics is a set of values that are based on ideals of hard
work and discipline. It is my another strength which makes me able to train myself. There are
various good habits which includes in ethics such as staying motivated, to finish all types of task
immediately and to have higher level of concentration power give a positive impact and
impression to employees. It also includes punctuality. In order to make a good impression, an
individual should always punctual for their meeting and appointments. It is my strength and
helps me at my workplace. With the help of this skill I can easily create and maintain a work life
balance. It shows my colleagues and doctors that I have dedication and have willingness to strive
hard.
There are various types of situations arises at workplace and at hospitals. Some of that
situations become the reason of interpersonal conflicts. Conflicts create bad working
environment which leads staff turnover. For solving this type of problem there is a requirement
to have the ability of solving conflicts in polite manner. It is my strength that makes me able to
decrease labour turnover and satisfy them. For having this ability it is important for an individual
to have another skills such as: problem solving skill, communication skills, team working skill
and emotional agility (Johnson and Parmenter, 2017). Conflict solution is a combination of all
these skills and I am lack in only influencing and negotiation skills. Except this skill, I can
handle all types of situations and can solve interpersonal conflicts which increases employees
morale and also decreases labour turnover. It also creates a healthy and strong and healthy
working environment. Problem solving skills help me out in decreasing the chances of errors
and mistakes on work and tasks. By solving problems on the time I can easily build and develop
strong relationship with other nurses and my staff.
With the help of Kolb's reflective cycle and model I can develop my skills and analyse all
skills in a specific manner. It is called experimental learning. This model has 4 stages such as
experience, reflects, conceptualize and plan. According to the first experience stage, it is stated
that life is full of experience and we can learn and increase experience by practising and can also
take several continuous opportunities. In the 2nd reflective stage, we need to analyse and see that
what we needed to be done and what we have actually done and experienced. Some people are

good in reflection, I also have the ability to reflect myself. In addition, in the next and 3rd
conceptualize stage, an individual tries to find out different ways of doing the same thing and

better understanding & further ideas. In the next planning and experimentation stage, an
individual practise the new theoretical knowledge. By taking own reflection and by analysing

which are my weakness and create several problems at workplace. There are some types of

(Rubens and et.al., 2018). It is an effective tool that provides a framework in order to identify the
areas of weaknesses which needs to be improved. Before making a development plan, it is
essential that to develop a personal vision. Without making and developing vision it is not
possible to make development plan. Feedbacks play a crucial role in order to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of an individual. Each employee has their opinion that differ from
others and that views helps a leader to analyse those areas which they require improving.
