STRATEGIES IN NATURAL DISASTER AND SEVERE WEATHER
Natural disasters now a days are very frequent. They are increasing and affecting more
number of people. Regarding ocean carrier of DHL, the organization must identify what will be
the problems they can face. The organization should have a clear idea about finding the solution
of the problem (Masood Badri, and et.al., 2016). There are more than one issue, if the disaster
has affected more than one country. In the disaster management, the organization must have all
the data required to solve the problem.
The company should be prepared for the disaster. There should be enough disaster
management technology system, so that it will help them in saving the life of people.
Prevention- the company must take all the preventive measures. They should outline and
note down the impacts, that can happen to the organization. All the impacts and hazards
should be noted down, so that they can develop a strategy to overcome that hazard.
Preparedness- there are various services and capacities which are deployed by the
government that can be used by the company in case of disaster. These facilities will
help them in overcoming the natural disaster.
The sea level is rising at the time of full moon night and that can have significant impact on the
port infrastructure. To overcome this, the port must maintain their jetty at a certain height, so that
will not affect the machines on the port. The port trust should dig a little deep, means the depth
of sea bed form the port should be more (Jonas Flodén, Edith Sorkina, 2014). That will reduce
the water level near the port, and at the time of water level rising, the water will not come on the
platform.
The port should equipped with such facilities that, if in any case the lightning strikes on
the communication, and the transmission gets disturbed, that will be avoided with a second. They
will be having a backup plan and emergency satellite communication system which will make
sure that the port is maintaining good communication with the ship. In the condition of heavy
winds, all the port equipments must be fixed, so that they will not move from their place.

STRATEGY TO REDUCE THE TIME DELAY IN DELIVERY
The delay in the delivery of the product can cause the economic loss for the charterer as
well as the port. There are some strategy for each loss, the port must follow, if they want to avoid
that risk. The first thing is the traffic management at the port. There are different ships which are
berthing and de-berthing from the port. And some ships are anchored at the dolphins. The port
must make sure that they will distribute the time properly (Henrik Pålsson, Ola Johansson,
2016). The ship should get enough time to unload the products, but should not stay on port for a
longer period of time. This will be a problem for other ship which is allocated that place and at a
particular date and time. The port should have proper communication with the captain of the
ship. So that when the ship arrive on port, she will have her place ready for berthing. All the
cargo can be unloaded successfully.
If any equipment is malfunctioned while unloading, this will make delay in time and the
economic loss for the port as well as to the receiver. Port must have all the standby equipment
ready at all the time. If in any case, the equipment malfunctioned, then they can use the stand by
equipment and can avoid the delay in time. All the workers working on port should have good
communication with each other and good team spirit (Sharon Cullinane, 2014). The labor
disruption is another term which can affect the time. The labor should get enough pay and proper
incentives for the function. This will make them happy and they will complete their work in
time.

reduced by maintaining proper draft of the ship during rough weather. It is possible that due to
heavy rolling and pitching of the ship, some container may get slipped into the sea. This can be
due to the weak tightening straps which are around the container (Kristina Liljestrand, Martin
Christopher, 2015). The crew must make sure that all the container are properly tightened and
they should not fall during rough weather. In this way the product loss can be avoided.

happen that the due to the loading of the ship, and during ballasting and de-ballasting, the ship
became unstable. Then to make ship stable in that condition, some of the cargo has been thrown
overboard. This is called as cargo jettisoning. This can be considered as a strategy so that, the
ship will become stable again. This can happen either at port during loading and unloading or
can happen at sea when the weather is rough. Jettisoning is done to save the ship.
The cost of the jettisoned cargo is make up by the general average law. This strategy can
also be followed when the ship is collided, grounded or flooding in the ship etc.
STRATEGY EMPLOYED IN SECURITY
There are various terrorist attacks are going on at different ports around the world. This is
the major issue regarding the safety of the people on board. The port trust should employ all sorts
of technical advancement at their port. No one should enter in the port without getting

security at each gate of the port. The workers will have their specified identity cards. They can
show those cards at the gate and then there will be a metal detector machine. Each person has to
pass through that machine. If anyone is carrying any sort of metal, that will be detected by that
machine. Each individual is properly checked by the security guard.
There should be the surveillance camera at every corner of the port. All the parts of the
port gets covered in those cameras. There will be some specialists persons who are always
monitoring the activities going on in the port through the camera. They can easily identify any
suspicious person entering in the port and doing what kind of activity. This strategy will also
help in increasing the security of the port, security of the cargo, security of the workers and the
sailors.

STRATEGY ON RELIANCE ON OIL
Oil fuel is the most important fuel used for transporting through ships. Those fuel will be
having sulphur content which can cause harm to the environment. The main aim is to reduce the
marine pollution. This can be done by using the fuel which is having low sulphur content or less
than 0.01% sulphur content (Jamal Khan, 1995). This will give less noxious emission and thus
will harm less to the environment. Other thing the organization can do is to use LNG fuels,
which will give absolute clear exhaust and cause no harm to the environment. Now a days,
electric propulsion systems is also in use. Here various batteries will be use to propel the ship.
These batteries will be charged by the DG present on the ship. Thus this propulsion system will
not harm the environment.
