The design of the template in using tables alternatively with pictures outlines the sections of

Q6: Is there anything that you think could be improved or that you would change on the
pamphlet?
The design, particularly the background needs improvement to make the pamphlet more
legible and attractive. Besides, the pictures need to be enlarged for a better understanding
with labelling of some pictures like the red one.
Q7: What else do you want to me to consider for the final pamphlet?
The font of the final template can be changed to ‘Comic sans’ to make the pamphlet more
appealing. A section on reducing the risks of the disease can gain more interest of the readers.
Step 2B: Summary of all five interviews
The responses of the first interviewee, who is a high school student suggests that he could
understand the pamphlet well and gained a general overview of the disease. He faced difficult
in understanding the differential diagnosis section and the language used in it as it consisted
of many scientific terms. He found this section of differential diagnosis irrelevant as well in
the pamphlet. The student also mentions that the design was fine but the combination of
colours used were not appealing. The second interview was of a homemaker with an infant
child. She was keen on understanding the causes and recognising the symptoms of the
disease to identify it during initial signs. She did not understand some of the terms used in the
diagnosis part and the significance of acetaminophen as a treatment option. She also found
the background too dark to read easily. She seems particularly interested in knowing the
measures to lower the risk of the disease in her child. The third interviewee is a teacher who
has a background knowledge of the disease. She suggests mentioning the occurrence of the

disease in adults. She does not find major difficulty in understanding the scientific
terminologies and thinks some of them are justified in the pamphlet. She also suggests
labelling of some pictures like the one demonstrating redness in the infected ear. The fourth
interview was taken from the owner of a bakery who is a middle-aged man. He seemed to
understand the fundamental concepts of the disease from the pamphlet but faced could not
identify the difference between diagnosis and differential diagnosis and found the latter
particularly difficult to understand. The design of the pamphlet was appealing to him and he
liked the bright appearance of the pamphlet. He suggested simplifying the language of the
pamphlet a little more to make it more understandable. The final interview was taken from a
young web designer who demonstrated a brief understanding of the overview of the disease
from the pamphlet. She was more focused on the design of the pamphlet and suggested
specific modifications in the font, picture size and the use of a different background for the
different sections.
Step 3B: A reflection justifying the changes in the final pamphlet
An analysis of all the responses and feedback received from the interviews highlight that
majority of them faced trouble in understanding the section of differential diagnosis as it
contained many scientific terms. It is also seen that the apart from one, all of them found the
background and the colour combination too bright for the eyes and unappealing. I realised
that as most of them were from non-biology background, they faced difficult understanding
scientific terms and found the concept of differential diagnosis irrelevant. Thus, I decided to
remove the section of differential diagnosis in the final pamphlet. Next, some of the terms in
the other sections were simplifies such as opacification, Eustachian and affliction to cloudy,
auditory tube and pain respectively for easy understanding. Another collective suggestion that

I received for the final pamphlet included the addition of preventive measures of the
infection. This section particularly interested majority of the interviewees as it would give
them direction to stay alert and prevent the onset of otitis media. Hence, I added a section
discussing the steps to reduce the risk of otitis media in children as it is more common in
children than adults. Another valuable suggestion received was from the teacher who
highlighted that the disease can also rarely occur in adults which should be mentioned in the
section discussing the age group affected by otitis media. This suggestion was also taken into
consideration and changed in the final pamphlet. The five interviews depicted the need to
enlarge the images used in the pamphlet for a better comprehension of the disease which was
also changed in the final pamphlet. The pictures used in the draft template were magnified
and the image demonstrating redness as a result of otitis media was labelled as many of the
interviewees could not understand the hat the picture depicted. I carefully took into account
the modifications in the design of the pamphlet received by all of them as it is one of the most
important aspects of pamphlets. They must be visually appealing, attractive and easy to read.
I changed the background combination of the final pamphlet and the font to comic sans as per
the feedback.
