CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION1.1 Background of the study This study is based on the concept of hegemony which refers to the leadership or dominanceof one state or group over others. In comparison to past years, dominance of one group over othersis continuously increasing (Surette, 2014). Political and cultural leadership places negative impacton the people who are dominated by others. Nevertheless, people are not highly aware about theconcept of hegemony and its impact on society. The political and cultural dominance can bereduced by the people when they are highly aware with this concept. Further, media also has highlevel on hegemony. The way in which people of the society perceive the concept of hegemonyhighly differs from each other. On the basis of this aspect, it has been assessed that people does not have high level ofunderstanding about the concept of hegemony. Thus, in the present research investigator willpresent the concept of hegemony in detail. In this, American crime story which is one of the mainsource of media has attempted to develop awareness among the people about the concept ofhegemony (Jewkes, 2015). This serial presented the fact that how Americans discriminate people onthe basis of their race, religion and caste etc. Further, researcher will also describe the positive andnegative aspect of hegemony. Relationship between the hegemony and mass media will also bedescribed by the investigator. Hence, the present research helps in developing awareness among thepeople of society to the large extent. 1.2 Aims and objectives Researcher prepares aims and objectives which assists them in conducting investigation inan appropriate manner. Aim of the present research is to analyze the concept of hegemony and howit is constructed through American crime story. Further, the objectives of research are enumeratedbelow:To evaluate the relationship of hegemony with the American crime story. To identify the extent to which hegemony and mass media are associated with each other. Why it is an issue now?Hegemony is an issue because it places negative impact on the society of people. Inhegemony specific group of people have cultural dominance on others. In America, residentsdifferentiated people on the basis of their race, caste and religion. In this, it is vital to developawareness about the the concept of hegemony. Mass media also places emphasis on developingawareness about the concept of hegemony. In the present era, hegemony also exists in theenvironment which places bad impact on the people of society. Thus, it is necessary to developunderstanding of the people towards the concept of hegemony which helps them in reducing thecultural and political dominance to the significant level. How and when the issue is going to be investigated?In order to analyze this issue researcher evaluates the concept of hegemony. Further,researcher also makes deeper assessment of mass media to know the level to which hegemony isassociated with it. Through this, researcher is able to able to present the suitable framework abouthegemony and how it is constructed through American crime story. What could this research shed light on?The present research will shed light on the concept of hegemony. Further, aims and objectives are also framed by the scholarin this section which helps them in carrying out the research in the right direction. Introductionsection of the dissertation also includes the causes behind the occurrence of such issue. Chapter 2: Literature reviewIn literature review section, scholar critically evaluates the findings and viewpoints ofdifferent researcher about hegemony and its construction. Under this section, researcher willevaluate the books, journals and scholarly articles etc. with the aim to prepare brief synopsis aboutthe research issue (Byers and Johnson, 2009). This section of the project helps researcher in gainingdeeper insight about the subject area. Chapter 3: Research methodologyThe main purpose of this section is to prepare the framework which assists researcher inconducting the study more effectively and efficiently. CHAPTER 2 LITERATURE REVIEW2.1 IntroductionLiterature review may be served as framework which is prepared by the researcher toconduct investigation in an effectual manner. Under this, researcher evaluates secondary sourcessuch as books, journals and research papers which helps in addressing the research aims andobjectives more effectively (Newburn and Stanko, 2013). In this, researcher makes criticalevaluation of the viewpoints of different researcher about hegemony. In this section, researcher alsomakes evaluation of the relationship which take place between the mass media and hegemony.Thus, by evaluating the current aspects of hegemony researcher is able to present the fair or suitableoutcome of theresearch issue or problem.Hegemony is considered as a concept that specifies cultural and ideological means throughwhich the dominant or the ruling class retain their dominance on subordinate classes by buildingspontaneous mass consent. The view point of Scharff (2011), contends that hegemony is acontinuous battleground in which the middle class and the working class people constructeconomic, political and cultural alliances with other social groups (Mason, 2012). Particularly, thisideology is represented as a social aspect that bind people together different class alliances. Further,Newburn (2013), argued that this subsequent ideology works only when it is related to the commonsense of the people and along with this, it also identifies how hegemony influence people forchange. Thus, from the overall discussion, it can be said that dominant social group in society havethe capacity to exercise intellectual and moral direction over others on larger scale. This also aimsto build a new system of social alliances to support people's rights (Gill and Scharff, 2011). Fromthe concept, it has been found out that the dominant class develops and upholds its hegemony incivil society through emphasizing on media sources and other voluntary associations. Thus, in suchcontext the study has been describing how the concept of hegemony has been generated fromAmerican Crime Story and it assists the society to spread awareness about cultural dominance. 2.2 Meaning and concept of HegemonyHegemony has been defined as a leadership and predominant authority and it is alsoconcerned with power that is available with the defined communities where the working classpeople has the right to vote. Under hegemony, a group of people in the society dominates otherpeople because of having their cultural dominance (Andrade and Urquhart, 2009).
