CHAPTER 1- INTRODUCTION1.1 Background of the study This study is based on the concept of hegemony which refers to the leadership or dominanceof one state or group over others. In comparison to past years, dominance of one group over othersis continuously increasing (Surette, 2014). Political and cultural leadership places negative impacton the people who are dominated by others. Nevertheless, people are not highly aware about theconcept of hegemony and its impact on society. The political and cultural dominance can bereduced by the people when they are highly aware with this concept. Further, media also has highlevel on hegemony. The way in which people of the society perceive the concept of hegemonyhighly differs from each other. On the basis of this aspect, it has been assessed that people does not have high level ofunderstanding about the concept of hegemony. Thus, in the present research investigator willpresent the concept of hegemony in detail. In this, American crime story which is one of the mainsource of media has attempted to develop awareness among the people about the concept ofhegemony (Jewkes, 2015). This serial presented the fact that how Americans discriminate people onthe basis of their race, religion and caste etc. Further, researcher will also describe the positive andnegative aspect of hegemony. Relationship between the hegemony and mass media will also bedescribed by the investigator. Hence, the present research helps in developing awareness among thepeople of society to the large extent. 1.2 Aims and objectives Researcher prepares aims and objectives which assists them in conducting investigation inan appropriate manner. Under this section, researcher willevaluate the books, journals and scholarly articles etc. with the aim to prepare brief synopsis aboutthe research issue (Byers and Johnson, 2009). Under this, researcher evaluates secondary sourcessuch as books, journals and research papers which helps in addressing the research aims andobjectives more effectively (Newburn and Stanko, 2013). In this, researcher makes criticalevaluation of the viewpoints of different researcher about hegemony.
