CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Title: Sustainable Green construction management in UK
Background
The main concept behind sustainable green construction is development of environmental
friendly buildings in UK. The reason of promoting green construction to promote minima usage
of resources in the conventional building construction. With this the concept of green
construction have a constant belief of minimal waste production from conventional buildings. A
sustainable or green building is a resultant of effective measured focused on increasing
efficiency of the resources used in construction of building including energy, materials and
water along with minimizing the impacts on human health and environment through waste
produced by buildings. The achievement of green sustainable construction includes designing,
better siting, construction methods and use of technologies. The green building is a practice of
creating structures and use of different processes which are environmental responsible and
recourse efficient throughout the life cycle of building from construction, design's siting,
maintenance, management, deconstruction and renovation. There are different components in the
green sustainable construction and most importance are water, energy and material and health to
make green building more sustainable. The main motive behind promotion of green sustainable
construction is restoration and enhancement of natural environment for providing the occupants
an experience of healthy living.
The process of green house construction is recognized as an integrative approach
including assemble of people in order to generate new ideas of sustainability and sharing them
in order to implement them in the construction process of building to save money and encourage
healthy living and protection of environment. Under the concept of green construction the whole
cost of building is considered while conventional building project includes initial cost of design
and construction cost.
Green house construction management is the concept is related with building the
environmental friendly structures and buildings along with combination of other components
including sustainable constriction practices, use of sustainable building materials into
construction and reduction of the wastage and impact on the environment. The objective under
green construction management do not end with completion of the green infrastructure it also
includes the risk associated which requires continues monitoring in order to serve the exact

purpose with which they being constructed and being erected. The leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system given on the design, operation, construction
and maintenance of green buildings. At the current times the World Bank Building council is
conducting research over finding out the effects of green building on the health and productivity
of the users of green buildings. Under the management of green building the buildings are given
a statues of solver, gold and platinum indicating the level of energy conservation and the
contribution of green building in protection of the environment.
Conventional building projects relies on extensive use of natural resources and utilizes a
huge amount of energy. The conventional buildings usually account for 39% of the overall use of
energy and utilises around 68% of overall electricity produced in US. It was also presented in
green building data that conventional buildings usually lead to 38% of overall emission of carbon
dioxide which is considered as a major source of greenhouse gas. Thus, based on this it can be
analysed that conventional buildings are not safe for the environment as well as, human health. It
is engaged in excessive consumption of energy and resources which hampers the balance in
nature. Thus, there is a need to develop sustainable green construction project in order to
minimise the use of energy and resources and reduce the emission of carbon dioxide in
environment. Proper management of sustainable green construction will also support to conserve
and protect the environment and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
With the lack of proper knowledge abs development of the green buildings the issues
arises over how to effective manage the green building and reduce the carbon emission or
wastage from such buildings. With lack of knowledge and difficulty in identification of proper
measures to green effects in the buildings the management becomes more difficult in order to
manage the building after their construction. The challenges faced in management of sustainable
green construction also includes the limited information over the products which are used in
development for sustainable construction. The overall concept of sustainability green
construction is over erecting such building which are environmental friendly and its management
is related with managing the activities in such a way that the non-environmental friendly
activities and its effect re minimal. The challenges faced in this process are being investigated in
the present research study.
The present research project is made over the sustainable green construction in UK and
the challenges and obstacle faced in management of the green construction. In this regard a

research propose have been made which includes research aim, objective, questions and
hypothesis which is duly approved by the tutor. The present research study includes detailed
investigation over the issues and challenges faced in management of sustainable green
construction. The project is present in 5 different chapters which start with introduction including
the background of the study, aim, objective, questions and hypothesis along with presenting
rationale and significance of the dissertation. The next is literature review where views and
opinion of different authors, writers and researcher are presented over the research topic of
sustainable green construction in UK and challenges and obstacles faces in its management. The
literature review is presented over the themes created from the objective of the research. After
this the research methodology is explained which clearly define the methods of conducting and
carrying out the research. The research methodology have explained the manner of data
collection, analysis and with explaining the flow of research project form one to another stage.
After this data analysis have been presented in the research study which includes the data
collected is being analysed to reach the outcome over the research topic of sustainable green
construction and challenges faced in its management in UK. The last part of the research project
is conclusion and recommendation where the researcher have presented the findings and learning
form research project and have presented. Recommendation in form of strategies for overcoming
the management challenges faced by sustainable green construction are presented at the end of
dissertation and the study is completed by putting the relevant references and source material
which are being refereed for collection of data and as guideline for completion of the research
study.
Challenges faced by the green construction company in relation with retaining of
sustainable aspects includes factors such as Managing project cost, unskilled labour force and
employees, inappropriate designing & its related documents etc. It is very much important for
business organisation to undertake sustainable business procedure and process so that it can help
in reducing negative impact of business if any. Also by using the concept of reuse, recycle of
company owns products and services, every company can makes sustainable development and
growth as well. Furthermore, by having adequate knowledge and information about different
techniques and methods related to business procedures can help company in minimizing its
business expenses thereby increasing overall profit margin.

Research Rationale
The research rationale for the present dissertation includes the objective of conducting the
research on the specific topic and why it is importance. Apart form this the rationale also present
the motive of selection of particular area over which the research is being carried out. The
present dissertation is prepared over the challenges and obstacle faced for the management of
sustainable green construction. The objective of conducting research over this topic is that there
are research present overt the benefits and concept of the sustainable green construction and
green building in UK. But only fewer studies have undertaken the research in direction of
investigating the challenges faced by the green construction. The concept of green building is
only a decade older in UK which is not much explored and researched upon in context of

challenges and issues faced in managing green buildings and its constructions. This lead the
researcher to select the particular topic to investigate the challenges and issues faced in the UK
region as the concept is only decade older and this not much investigated by any researcher.
Research significance
The research significance describe the contribution made by the study with depicting its
importance for the society as a whole and contribution to individual and the future researcher and
academic learners. The significance of this research study over management of sustainable green
construction and obstacle and challenges faced there in, will make a huge contribution to the UK
society in understanding the concept of green construction and how its management is facing
problem in keeping its objective intact in meeting the environmental protection requirement.
The research will also proved assistance to the future researcher in conducting further research or
taking help from this research in conducting their research as well. The present searches study
will also assist the individual students who are academic learners to use this study as a base and
start their researches over similar topic in the future.

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
Literature review under a research study a detailed survey of books, scholarly article and
journals along with other relevant resources is done over a specific issues or area of research or a
theory. The survey done as literature review provides a summery, description and critical
evaluation of these works regarding research problems which is under investigation. Under the
literature review opinion and view point of different authors, writers are presented which are
relevant to the research topic. For the present report many books, journal and scholarly articles
were referred in order to select the best material over the sustainability green construction and
challenges faced for its management. The literature review for the present research study is
written with taking opinion and perception of different authors and writers from their books,
journal and article in critical manner.
Theme 1: Introduction to sustainable green Construction Industry in UK
As per the view of, Gibbs and O’Neill, (2015) the building industry is a vital element of
any economy and it has a significant impact on the environment as well. As seen by the virtue of
the size the construction industry is the largest user of material resources, water and energy and it
also contributes a lot in increasing the pollution in a nation. With the increasing negative impact
of this industry the response is coming from taking effective measure to mitigate the growing
consequences of organisations and commitments are made for better environmental
performances with setting targets and forming appropriate strategies and taking actions which
reflected the need to make buildings and its activities more sustainable. The sustainable green
construction have shown a high potential in making a significant contribution in the sustainable
development and protection of the environment and improving quality of life.
On the other hand, Zhang, Wang, Hu and Wang, (2017) stated that the concept of
sustainable green construction for the construction is at the early stage of making paradigm shift
and for accelerating green building in UK the professional under the green industry are required
to have the latest data to make informed decision. With a survey conducted over 69 nations it is
identified that a new green building scope is expanding with providing a scope on major
influence on the construction industry in both developed and developing countries. UK is also
non untouched with this concept and in order to attain sustainability for resources and
environment one of the major step required to be taken is constructing the green building and

reducing the wastage from the buildings including carbon emission. This also includes reduction
in the uses of resources, energy and waters for attending green building concept and making a
healthier environment to live. Focus has been made on adopting of better and more effective
means of development as well as growth thereby ensuring sustainability aspect. Furthermore,
sustainable development is considered as one of the most important factor which needs to
emphasise for overall economic development of UK.
It is stated by Dadhich and et.al., (2015) that sustainable construction term is generally
used to describe the application of sustainable development to the construction industry. The
industry can be defined as a combination of all those who produce, plan, develop, design, build,
alters and maintain the built environment. This also includes material manufactures and suppliers
and also clients, end users to the buildings. This means that under the sustainable green
construction the work do not stop with construction of the building rather it depends on the end
user as well that how they response to this concept and takes measures to reduce the wastage and
control carbon emission form building to protect the environment and taking a step further in the
chain of sustainable green construction. The construction industry of is going under changes
from past two decades where it is adapting the development of infrastructure through sustainable
green construction.
It is critiqued by Kibert, (2016) that in UK for ensuring the development of sustainable
green construction, UK Green Building council (UKGBC) is formed in 2007, which have main
aim of radically transforming the way in which built environment in UK is designed, planned,
constructed, operated and maintained. The council is established with to answer the concerns
related with impact on environment through building and infrastructure and in particular the
usage of energy, water, materials resources and the green houses gas emission and the health of
the occupant and users of buildings. As per the formation of UKGBC, it depicts about the
progress was made by the UK in the context of the whole construction industry sector. Also, it
helps in defining the whole journey of transforming the whole business operations of a
construction to sustainable green construction industry with the main motive of erecting
infrastructures and buildings within the geographical limits of the UK itself.
However, Darko and Chan, (2016) presented an opinion that sustainability and green
concept are often used interchangeably, which includes maintenance of resources specifically
renewable resources, maintaining technologies, economic development and enhancement of

well-being of human life along with fostering and enhancing comfort and fulfilling lifestyle for
human inhabitants. The construction industry is said to be the one which uses most of the
resources. Introduction of green or sustainability in this industry mainly focus on use of water
and energy more efficiently, enhancement and protection of the health and well being of the
occupants and reducing negative impact in form of waste, pollution and sewage. The
Construction Industry plays an important role in the development of economy of every country.
All the operations undertaken by the construction industry mainly emphasises on making
significant difference in between current as well as future development.
According to Abuzeinab and et.al., (2018) stated that the green construction are usually
adapted by the public to make the environment positive and stress free from various pollution
which is harming the health and life of the people in daily routine. By viewing the extinguishing
condition of the environment mainly people are implementing this concept of designing their
building through green construction in context of bringing more positive impact to their life. By
this procedure it bringing such concept they are getting more fresh air and also save wastages
which they are facing more nowadays (Ilhan and Yaman, 2016). Thus, to manage the sustainable
green construction for longer time period thus is mainly used by examining the negative impact
of wastages which are to be thrown in water or changes in climate condition whir resultant in
bring more challenges to the UK to overcome from such issue. In such cases green construction
is imposed which bring more positive impact to people and also their health life are to be
improved in productive way.
Chew, Conejos and Asmone, (2017) argued that green building concept is mainly not
known by many people and also not implemented in right way. Thus, there is a deep study to
implement such matter to get more productive results. In such cases to manage the green
building concept in normal life, people had to spend more of their time in designing and learning
their concept in right way and also use to reduce the wastages in daily life. As the concept green
building not results in imposing more trees and getting fresh air but also it requires more renewal
items which is to be enhances in building to change the environment and reduce pollution and
decorative items in their building to make it look different (Wong, San Chan and Wadu, 2016).
From the above suggestion which is stipulated regarding the usefulness of green construction
building requires to be more knowledge and techniques to bring this concept and also to manages
it is better way. If they are not manages and constructed in right way, it results in getting more

expensive regarding clearing such products and also it charges more cost if they are not
examined and implemented properly.
GhaffarianHoseini and et.al, (2017) suggested that by choosing this concept of managing
the building through green it also saves cost as usually if any person designed their own building
it results in bringing more changes to various decorative items which they used to decorate at
their house. Market is boom for decorative items and also bring various unique products which
attract the public interest. But the major reason by adapting the green construction is resulting in
saving water and resources which they are utilising in making green construction sustainable for
longer time period (Lu and et.al., 2017). The main reason which also came across by adapting
this concept so that government also not impose to bound any specific rules and regulation by
implementing this concept. It also acquires proper and unique design are available and reuse
such products to decorate their home and improve their quality of life through this concept.
Letcher and Vallero, (2019) in controversy of stated above as the concept regarding the
green construction are easily but the major impact arises by the green architect which design
such product according to their own needs and demand. If they are to be managed according to
the person needs that it results in more expensive as it requires lot of cost to maintain such green
building and also lot of skilled person are needed to design such structure. The main reason for
bringing such concept is that it provide awareness among the people regarding the usefulness of
their procedure it results in lacking such strategy to bring more awareness strategy among
people. It also examines the usefulness of choosing their method to changes their housing
designing and also save wastages to bring more productive results in their unique home decor
system.
Herazo and Lizarralde, (2016) identifies their opinion in relation to determining the
importance of using the green construction building for sustainable growth and also provide
opportunities to the communities to implements such changes in better way. Thus, it results in
bringing more awareness to the people by having the positive impact on natural environment and
also save cost and resource which is to be spend in designing such concept. As this is mainly
imposed for green building which bring more quality life and changes the condition of
environment for future development. This concept is mainly based on 3 aspects such as reduce,
recycle and reuse the available wastages to get more productivity results and the benefits by
implementing such method in right way (Schmidt and Osebold, 2017). Thus, sustainable design

mainly related to using the products and resources which are organics and more hygienics and
results in improving the health condition of the people by reducing through air pollution or any
other smell which is used in decorative items to design house in more innovative way. The
importance of using this method is that it can be maintained and replaced easily and also these
things requires lees man power to conduct such procedure in effective way.
Theme 2: Sustainable Construction Implementation
As per Bringezu and Bleischwitz (2017) stated that the process is requires from the
journey of structuring the green construction building to the application which results in bringing
more sustainability to building by choosing such methods. As this concept is not that easily
which is to be adapted at same scale as various research and techniques are to be made which it
lasts longer. There are various factors which are required to bringing new innovation in such
concept. By choosing this concept it results in bringing awareness to people by implementing
such methods in their own building as by using this concept it results in making the environment
neat and clean. The public can recycle and reuse the wastes in more productive way (Hasan and
et.al., 2018). The important things which is requires in green building concept is that there is
close inspection of the contactors, architects and engineers and clients which their suggestion are
required at every stages. As once the building are designed it is to be maintained and further
designed by the clients themselves.
Wong, Kanellopoulos and Edmonson (2018) criticised that the major steps which is
required at the time of construction of green building are related to examine the accurate waste
which come up during the process of construction of building. Thus, this step is to be
controllable at every phase to reduce the waste which results in harming the environmental and
also causing many consequences which results in affecting the economy of the country. The
resources to establish such products are to be needed at larger scale as to designing such building
requires lot of resources which is to be gather to publish a particular product. Thus, in case of
green building, lot of resources are to be needed to get the better productivity.
Umer and et.al., (2016) examined that the another step which is required in sustaining the
green concept building for longer terms stay is that to use the more eco friendly products in form
of resources. The whole sustainability in business examined through the supply chain which is
used in products till the final completion of such products and building. Usually the
sustainability also occurs in case of transportation of goods and products to the final places.

On the other hand it is stated by Lizarrald and et.al., (2015), the current demand for
economically viable buildings in UK is combined with the requirement of maximizing the
efficient use of the natural resources. Lack of this consideration have resulted in generation of
considerable issue of sustainability which lead to situation of higher consumption of energy and
material during both construction phase as well as operational phase of building projects. In this
regards value management approaches offers crucial methods for achieving a better built
environment with upgrading the construction process which includes effective use of the natural
resources such as water, material as well as energy. The concept of sustainable construction is
taken into account for implementing efficient use of natural resources, minimisation of negative
impact on environment along with satisfying human needs while improvising their quality of life.

in order to eliminate wastage from the brief before commencement of the construction is

As far as is Yang (2017) concerned, stated that under the concept of economic
sustainability the planning system is a mechanism for linking national and local goals. They
prepare different strategies and plans to make the cost effective. The local and regional
government support the construction project in getting investment from the various sources.
They encourage the construction houses to prepare plan, cultural & community development and
infrastructure pieces to attract more and more investors. For the sustainability they construct the
building with proper planning and resources also they plan to manage the waste from the
construction. The usage of heavy drilling machines, equipment’s etc. create unnecessary sound
which increases the noise pollution and affect the natural resources. The proper planning
regarding the construction equipment and its usage help them to reduce the pollution. They also
have to use the alternatives at necessary places to improve the construction work and
sustainability of environment. The construction industry has the great opportunity and authority
to help the government in tackle or resolve the environment issues by using the government
sustainable construction strategy.

As per the views of Affolderbach and Schulz, (2016) it has been criticised that the usage
or alternatives may affect the quality of construction or increases the cost. The alternative
machines or equipment may not give the desire output of the construction process. They
unnecessarily increases the cost and require more time to construct building which affect both
project budget or time. According to the views of the author construction project require proper
planning in respect of usage of resources and try to minimise the resources without
compromising with quality. It would help them to protect the resources for the future generation
and provide them different benefits of natural resources. The natural resources such as plants
help to increase the carbon dioxide level and protect the life of human beings by providing
oxygen. Construction project can treat the waste in 3 categories like hazardous, non-hazardous
and inert. It helps them to separate their wastage in different category and then treat them
according to their nature which ultimately decreases their negative impact on environment.
Theme 3: Poor Performance Of Construction Industry
Yang (2017) suggested that the major challenges which is faced in relation to developing
the sustainable green construction are to be related to the designing process as it requires the
skilled person to design such activity which is too interpreted in better way. If the person had not
sufficient knowledge regarding the ability to use such process in designing the green
construction building it results in facing challenges in constructing and managing the activities
which is related to green construction. As for longer term sustainability it results in facing issue
is relation to the unskilled labour which are not working according to the guidance and
instruction given by their architectures or designer. The needs of the labour are to be needed at
every scale and also their supporting in relation to such establishment are to be made to
accomplish such task in stipulated time. Thus, to construct the green construction building it
requires the major challenges which is to be faced in relation to appointing the skilled person
which are more dedicated towards such works and also the importance in bringing awareness by
conducting such process in better way.
Fewings and Henjewele (2019) viewed that the unskilled person are not the major
challenges which is faced by construction company built the major challenges arise by not
guiding them in right way. As every person are not skilled regarding such work as their work is
not demanding and also not provides much profit to the labour to continue and balance their
livelihood in better way. Thus, in such cases they are to be well trained to conduct such activity

and also learn new things in their life to bring changes in their techniques and also commit such
work to bring new innovation in their upcoming task.
Abuzeinab, Arif and Qadri (2017) concluded that the challenges which is faced in
adapting the green construction building is related to applying the cost. As it is considered to be
expensive procedure as generally the matters are related to reuse and recycle of products but it
also requires clearance and approvals from government in bringing such concept in building. As
government not easily approve such concept as they examined such concept by viewing the
every possible situation which bring changes in respect of positive and negative aspects. Thus, it
brings changes in such procedure as it requires lot of cost to use the organic products in making
the environment green and clear with natural positive impact. Cost are more important in
bringing and implementing changes in working and also if company having more cost they can
plan their activities in more productive way. As there is need to develop new ideas and
implement in designings such building to minutely examine the factors which is needed to make
it organise and save energy. The cost is also to be needed in cases of lightning facility to be
provides in building or indoor air quality which is required to accomplish the actual projects.
Thus, managing cost is the challenges which is to be adapted at the time of constructing the
green construction building.
Abuzeinab and et.al., (2016) criticise that this is not the major challenges which is to be
faces by company as they can prepare a proper planning strategy to overcome from the issue
which resulting in bring more cost in attempting the green construction building concept. As the
concept is mainly developed for long term profits thus it is to be planned according to the needs
and demands which is to be raised in such project. In this concept mainly it is to be used to be
organic and eco-friendly products thus to manage the cost and save the energy for future use,
green construction building is unique concept. If they are to be manages in right way they are the
most cost saving method and also the designing which is to be needed in respect of saving

industry are highly responsible for energy consumption. They use the non-conventional energy
while creating the buildings and infrastructure. Planning and designing of infrastructure helps to
reduce the usage of energy and protect the environment from the hazardous gases and disease.
The usage of alternative energy such as fossil fuel, wind power, nuclear power and hydro-power
reduce the carbon emission and provide the better environment in compare to the usage of
conventional source of energy like coal, petroleum, oil etc.
As per the views of the author Raven and et.al., (2016) quality of the constructive
building and project are also one of the major reason of poor performance. The quality of the
construction requires highly qualified raw material and equipment’s to increases the interest of
customer in green building concept and satisfying their needs and demand. As per the survey
conducted on the green building in the UK, it indicates that there has been use of 30% less
energy so as to protect the whole environment in comparison of the conventional building. On
the other hand also focus has been made on the conducting of corporate social responsibility to
manage all the waste, carbon emission by following requisite social norms and standards so as to
attain sustainable green construction. Also, it comes up with high cost and time requirement to
manage them which has created a big challenge for the construction project. The quality of the
construction project can be improved by the selection of proper material in constructive activity
which also protect the environment and welfare of human being.

only the major issue of sustainable or green construction. They also have to focus on the target of
reducing the carbon emission. The construction project are generating 25 % to 40% carbon
emission. Smart planning and scheduling activities provide support to construction industry to
develop their project according to the environment norms and use reuse or recycled material in
their construction. For example they can reuse the untreated concrete, bricks and wood in other
constructive work. The smart planning also help to focus on the treatment of waste material and
equipment to reduce carbon emission such as to separate the renewable or recycled items from

Research methodology under a research project is of crucial importance. The research
methodology describes the research method, approaches and designs in detail with highlighting
the ones which are used in the present study to conduct and complete the dissertation. The choice
of each element under RM is justified with describing the benefits which each specific element
gives and the contribution it makes in completion of the research study effectively. The RM can
be described as a framework which is associated with a specific set of paradigmatic assumptions
which are used to conduct this research. For conducting research methodology there two criteria
which must be met, first criteria states that the methodology should be the most appropriate one
in order to achieve objectives of the research. The second one states that the methodology shall
possess an ability to replicate the methodology used in any other research pertaining of same
nature. The following is the research methodology for this dissertation over the investigating the
challenge and obstacles faced in management of sustainable green construction within UK. The
following is explanation of each element of RM and the rationale behind choosing a specific
element.
Research type
Research type refers to the method that is been used by the scholar in making the study in
relation to the specific issue by using the scientific methods. In other words it means the
scientific or the systematic procedure used in collecting data, interpretation, analysis and
implications with regard to the business problem that is pertaining. Research methods are been
classified into two parts that is quantitative and qualitative research method. Quantitative method
referred as the technique under which numbers are been used for resolving the problem. This
method focuses on the collecting the numerical data, drawing the inferences and developing
summary of the selected data. However, qualitative technique reflects the words, emotions,
sounds, feelings and the other elements that are unquantifiable or non-numerical. Those
information’s are considered to be qualitative which cannot be assessed by using the
mathematical tools. This feature also indicates that a particular incident doesn't take place for
allowing the collection of the reliable data.
With reference to this study, Investigator is making use of the quantitative technique
which helps the researcher in making the analysis of the topic the in consideration with the

manipulating the existing statistical data with the use of the computational methods. This method
helps scholar in focusing on accumulating numerical data and in generalizing the topic for

As per this study, Deductive approach has been used for making the quantitative analysis
more useful as it describes the casual relationship in between the variables and the concepts. It
generalizes the findings to the certain extent and helps in measuring the study quantitatively.
Deductive approach explores for the known phenomenon and applies for testing that the theory
chosen by the scholar is valid or not in the given circumstances. Under this, the reasoning begins
with the theory and resulted to create for the new hypothesis. Thereafter, the hypothesis created
is been put up for the testing towards the observations that leads to rejection or the confirmation
of hypothesis. It allows for avoiding the risk and very short is available under this for completing
the study effectively through the use of the several resources, This approach resulted as
beneficial for investigator in relation to understanding the whole process of the sustainable and
the green construction of the management and also in determining the potential and the issues

information regarding obtaining answer to research question. This merely aims to explore
specific aspects of the research area. Exploratory research does not aim to provide final and
conclusive answers to research questions. For the present research study descriptive research
design has been selected in order to determine the challenges and issues faced in the
management of sustainable green construction in UK. The rationale behind choosing this specific
design is that it that is puts specific focus on the challenges and obstacle faced in management of
UK's sustainable green construction. With selection of descriptive research design it is ensured
that a focus on specific area of the research topic have been put and this result in effectively
answering the research question. This also assures researching to effective outcome of the
research study over investigating the challenges and obstacle which is the focus point in the
research topic.

also helped the scholar in assessing the challenges and the issues that are been faced at the time
of managing green construction sustainable project. It has also enabled the investigator in
gathering the information and the knowledge in relation to the requirements of the process and
the sustainability of the management. This has also supported in gathering information and
knowledge regarding requirements of green construction process and its management of
sustainability.
Data collection techniques
The data collection for a research study can be done through two ways, primary and
secondary methods of data collection. Under the primary research data is gathered through
interviews, surveys, questionnaires and observations. This data is collected first time by the
researcher from the selecting specific respondents or the group of population. It is selected from
the field work or from face to face interaction by the researcher. On the other hand, primary data
is collected from recognized and pre exiting sources including books, journals and articles, web
articles, magazines and others. The benefits of gathering information from secondary sources is
that the information is reliable and also this does not consume much time in collecting the data
over research topic.
Conversely, data collection from primary source is time-consuming but this gives

questionnaire is made with alignment to research objectives in order to assess the green
construction management and challenges and obstacles faced in this regard. This means that for
conducting this research study the both qualitative and quantitative data have been identified.
The quantitative data have been gathered from questionnaire method and the qualitative data
have been collected from the interview the experts and experienced workers over sustainable
green construction in order to identify its concept, management requirements in order to cope
with the challenges and issued faced in meeting the objective of green construction to attain
suitability in UK. The rationale behind selection of the survey method and interview is that it has
given research an opportunity of direct interaction with the respondent to know their views over
the sustainable green construction and its current position in UK. The questionnaire method is
suitable to collect data from the personnel belonging and working in this industry, while direct
interviews methods suits the purpose of collecting data from manager and higher authority
having detailed experience related to green construction in UK.
For every researcher the process of data collection is considered as one of the most
important process. In completing this research study, researcher has made use of both the sources
which are primary and secondary. Also, questionnaire has been prepared for collecting relevant
data from 50 staff members engaged in the Sustainable green construction business.
Data population
The research population under research is generally a large collection of people or objects
which have a focus of scientific query. The data population is a well-defined collection of people
who have a similar characteristic. All the people or objects under a population generally have
common trait or a binding characteristic. A population is the overall set of people form which
certain members are selected as sample form which the data is gathered over the research topic
by asking different questions under different methods of primary data collection. The population
is a complete set of the elements which can either be objected or people possessing common
characteristics. The data population comprise two groups the target and accessible population.
The target population is the entire group of people to which the researcher wisher to generalize
the finding of the study. This population is selected to meet the criteria of researcher's interest.

population are the people who work in the green construction filed. Under this, the research have
reasonable access to those who particularly worked in UK under this target industry.
Under the quantitative data collection through the survey questionnaire method over the
green construction, the sample population have been selected as 50 staff members who are
associated with the sustainable green construction and its management. Here the people working
in green construction industry is the overall target population and these 50 staff members are the
accessible population. For the qualitative data collection of survey interviews, the data
population is the constructions of green building and of this accessible postulation is 5
constructors who are engaged in the process of sustainable green construction management. The
constructors have been selected on the basis that they are the one with more and relevant
information related with barriers and challenges faced in management of sustainable green
construction in the UK.
Data Analysis
Data analysis is the practice in which the statistical techniques and the logical methods
are been applied systematically in order to describe, condense and evaluate the data with
assessing the patterns within the observation through entire collection of the data. The data could
be analysed by using two major techniques that is SPSS and thematic analysis. SPSS is the
statistical package which is used by the researcher in order to make the analysis of the complex
statistical data. This method is useful in assessing the survey data and in data mining for getting
the most from the research projects. On the other hand thematic analysis emphasize on
examining the themes within the data. Coding is counted as the primary process in order to
develop the themes in the raw data with making recognized essential moments within the data
and in encoding it before making the interpretation.
In this study, researcher has used SPSS technique as it is the best tool through which
quantitative study could be done effectively. This technique helps in organizing and managing
the data as it offers lot of control to the users. As software remembers location of variables and
the cases, it provides for the accurate and the quicker analysis of the data. In the present research
study the application of SPSS tool for generating the research outcome have been done where

mean, median and other descriptive analysis are conducted to extract the outcomes over
management of sustainable green construction from the responses given by the 50 staff members
associated with this field over the questions asked to them through survey method.
For collecting relevant data and information pertaining to the research topic, 50 staff
members has been selected as interviewees as engaged in the business of Sustainable green
construction management. It has helped the researcher in gathering most appropriate as well as
reliable data about the subject matter of the research topic. Also, by using such SPSS tool for
better interpretation of data collected, it has assisted many other scholars as well as researcher in
completing their research study as well.
Ethical consideration
It is very important for the researcher to consider all the ethical aspects while conducting
the research study. Ethics refers to the norms and the standards for the purpose of conducting
study ethically which means in compliance with all the laws and legislations. It helps the scholar
in identifying the difference in between unacceptable and the acceptable behaviour.
Under this study, Researcher has followed all the ethical consideration as he had focused
on ensuring adequate level of the confidentiality of the data and also ensures for maintaining the
appropriate protection of privacy in relation to the research data. Scholar has avoided the
deception and the exaggeration relating to the aims and the objectives of study and has not
presented any kind of the misleading information in the study. The data collected in the study are
taken from the appropriate sources so the results drawn from the study are considered as valid
and reliable. Investigator has not made the use of any offensive, unacceptable and the
discriminatory language in conducting the research which is also counted that he has made the
study ethically. For collection of date through primary method the consent of respondents is been
duly cared off. This means that before taking the information from the respondents an informed
consent have been taken.
All the participants were given information over the purpose of data collection, the aim of
the research and the final use of the data and information given by them to the researcher. It is
also ensured that all the respondent give correct and true information over the questions asked
them. The researcher have not manipulated any of the participant to give the desired information
which can be good for the research and give desired outcome for the study. References are been
used from the appropriate style that is Harvard style through which validity and the reliability of

the data can be assessed. This sets the authenticity of the data which is collected for the research
over the concept and management of sustainable green construction in UK.
All the ethical norms and standards has been followed by the researcher. Furthermore, no
data and information as collected has been copied as it. Total rephrasing has been for using such
data in completion of the whole research project. Also, consent form has been filled in by the
respondents pertaining to their willing participation.
Research Limitations
While undertaking the whole research project, researcher has to face many challenges
and limitations. At the time of gathering relevant and proper data researcher has to be more
focused about means and procedures to be followed so that adequate data can be obtained. It has
been assessed that in completing the whole research study, researcher has faced limitations in
relation with time as well as financial constraints. Because of limited time period, researcher has
not been able to conduct survey for collecting fresh data. As a result of which, secondary sources
has been used for collecting required data. It has saved a lot of time of researcher and assist in
completing the research study in more effective and efficient manner.
For overcoming financial limitations, researcher has made use of available data sources
such as books, journals, articles etc. Also, use of official websites has been done for collecting
data without incurring much cost. Furthermore, researcher has made use of keywords such as
Sustainable, Green construction management, globalization etc. for gathering proper data.

that, 52% of the participants said that, people are very much aware about the benefits and
importance of green construction building. They said that, green construction building has
various positive benefits which in turn results in higher sustainable environment. It also explains
the various economic as well as social benefits. People are aware of the fact that, green

etc. They expressed their view and said that, green construction building leads to higher cost and
also helps in reducing the negative impact. This in turn results in long term sustainability of the
building for the future prospect. Use of advanced technology helps in creating strong building
which in turn results in high operational growth. As supported by literature review, green
construction is adapted by the public to make positive and stress free environment from various

approval is one of the crucial steps in order to effectively establish green construction
management. However, from secondary analysis, it is outlined that the local and regional
government support helps the construction project to raise funds from the various sources.
Construction company and industry have great opportunities and authority in order to help the
government in resolving the environmental issues with the help of government sustainable
construction strategy. Literature review states that, government also not impose to bound any
specific rules and regulation by implementing this concept. 20% respondents said that,
equipment analysis helps in analysing the resources and equipment’s required to establish the
green construction management without any problem. This helps in analysing the various
equipment’s which will be used to carry out the project with accuracy and efficiency. As
supported by literature review, proper planning regarding the construction equipment and its
usage help company in reducing the pollution and controlling cost. Remaining 18% of the staff

construction resulting in bringing lot of wastages in country and also it results in affecting the
nature by viewing the changes in environment and the techniques which is used by the company
in constructing the building. Thus, from the views of 5 constructors, 4 are agreed with the
statement regarding the usefulness of the green construction building. According to their view
point, there are various benefits which is gained by adapting the green building. As through this
procedure the money can be saved by using the wastage products or reusing the products which
are less in demand. As this statement is supported in the literature reviews that the benefits for
this concept is only gained if the person having adequate knowledge’s of using this concept in
better manner. Thus, the skilled person is appointed to trained and build such structure so that it
results in raising sustainability for longer time period.
The remaining constructors which is not agree with this statement is that they find this
concept as the time consuming manner and also lot of knowledge’s is required to applies such

Interpretation: From the above, it has been interpreted that out of 5 constructors, 2 states
that a green building incorporates the environmental considerations into every stage of the
building that mainly focus ion the designing and maintenance phases. Moreover, in this, the
major consideration that should be taken into account is its designing and development
efficiency, water and energy efficiency, resource efficiency and indoor environmental quality.
On the other side, 2 respondents state that the green building is mainly stress on protecting the
existing ecologies and also improving the ecologies that may also damages in the past.
Therefore, as per them, the major key consideration are how the company utilize the fewer
material through efficient design as well as elimination of unnecessary finish material. So that it
will help or promote the material as well as water recycling in their operations.
Beside this, 1 respondent out of 5 state that while constructing the green building, the
major consideration is an increase in respiratory ailments and the allergies or use of chemicals
which give off gas from the material that also contribute to the sensitive awareness of the air
which an individual breathe in their homes.
Q.5) Why do green building cost more than traditional building?
From the data it can be determined from the above analysis that green building cost more
than traditional building in many ways. In the interview two constructors interpreted that cost of
green building is more as compared to traditional buildings. Because green building requires
more renewable energy equipment to be installed in buildings and the roofs are vegetated. The
construction cost of green buildings are more as compared to the traditional buildings. People

in the budget of people that is why its demand is more in the market. Green building costs more
because it has potential to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. On the economic level the
efficiency of saving global energy and spending it to reuse cost less for people once green
building is constructed. Another reason is that green buildings designs are complicated than
traditional buildings and requires lots of work in architect, electrical, specialized green building
consultants etc. The construction of green buildings takes more time as it is cost effective and the
planning starts before starting of the construction. Construction cost is more because use of
material in construction of green building are made up of mud or sun dried. And skilled labor are
required for preparation standard building.

important strategy in respect of overcoming from the challenges. Majorly companies fails in
