Abstract
Education is one of the most important requirement in the life of an individual. It shapes the
personality of the person and also determines the standard of life he or she would be living. It is
through education that people get to earn about important subjects. Furthermore, education also
ensures the extent of communication that a person can engage in. For instance, a person can learn
the different languages of the world which leads to the increase in the communicative power of
the individual. In this respect, it is important to understand that English is one of the most
common language that is spoken and understood by majority of the people around the world. It is
through education and the formation of an effective curriculum that leads to the efficient learning
of English by the foreign language students of the world. The aim of the research is to
understand the effectiveness of curriculum and implementation in the context of the grade 12
students who do not know this language and the impact of this teaching curriculum on the
teaching methods of the teachers. In this regard, it can be observed that the research has
followed a positivism research philosophy, deductive research approach and descriptive research
design. The data has been gathered with the aid of primary data collection process in the form of
interview which has been analyzed with the aid of qualitative data analysis technique. The
research study is significant as it analyzes all these important fields in a great detail.

Chapter 1: Introduction
1.0 Overview
Education is one of the most important requirement in the life of an individual. It shapes
the personality of the person and also determines the standard of life he or she would be living. It
is through education that people get to earn about important subjects (Alsubaie 2016).
Furthermore, education also ensures the extent of communication that a person can engage in.
For instance, a person can learn the different languages of the world which leads to the increase
in the communicative power of the individual (Niehaus and Williams 2016). In this respect, it is
important to understand that English is one of the most common language that is spoken and
understood by majority of the people around the world. It is through education and the formation
of an effective curriculum that leads to the efficient learning of English by the foreign language
students of the world (Alsubaie 2015).
1.1 Problem Statement
Often times it is observed that certain difficulties are faced when a teacher attempts to
teach English to those students to whom English is a foreign language. In this context, it is
important to understand that the formulation of the teaching curriculum and its implementation is
essential for the teaching methods of the teachers.

The aim of the research is to understand the effectiveness of curriculum and

Since the ancient times, there has been an attempt made by the elders of the society to
pass important knowledge to the younger members in the society. This was done with the help of
oral communication in those times as the method of writing was still not in existence (Lindén,
Annala and Coate 2017). It was not until the development of technology and machinery that the
importance and the need of writing books was felt. From the beginning of the nineteenth century,
books were formulated which began important repository of such knowledge. Those people who
had access to such books were considered to be more knowledgeable than others. Similarly,
according to Wijngaards-de Meij and Merx (2018), it can be observed that such knowledgeable
people in the society had better chances of improving their life when compared to the other
people in the society.
2.3 Theme 2: Theoretical Framework
There are different ways in which education can be imparted to the students. One of the
most important theoretical frame work which is associated with the field of education is that of

2.4 Theme 3: Development of curriculum and its various characteristics
In the twenty first century, the method of teaching under went a change. Education
gradually came up to take a formal shape whereby there is a host of teachers present to impart
knowledge and information to the students. In this respect, according to Konokman et al. (2018)
it can be seen that such knowledge is imparted in a formals setting known as the classroom. The
aim is to make such children aware about the society and to develop their cognitive abilities to
the extent that they can fend for themselves in the society when they grow up. As a result of this,
education has undergone many reforms.
One of the most important reform is that of the development of curriculum. According to
Kohli et al. (2018), Curriculum is considered to be important as it provides a frame work to the
information that needs to be taught. One of the basic characteristics of curriculum is that it has
provided a guidance to the teachers to understand what needs to be taught to the children of
different ages Furthermore, it also gives the students a clear indication of what is being taught in

2.5 Theme 4: Significance of curriculum for the English foreign language students
English is one of the most commonly spoken and understood language all across of the
world. As a result, it proves to be an important language to communicate with people in
different parts of the globe. Different schools and universities provide the language of English as
a subject to be learned for the people who are not familiar with this language. The learning of a
new language requires the students to be aware about its grammar, the composition of language,
the different parts of vocabulary and sentence structure. All of this can be learned in an effective
manner if the subject sis dealt with in a structured way (Glatthorn, Jailall and Jailall 2016).
It is in at this level that the importance of curriculum arises for those people who are not
well-versed in the language of English. According to Rouvali and Riga (2018), Curriculum
provides a formal structure to the teachers as well as the students which enables them to
understand how their subject would be tackled at different points of time. It gives assurance to
the students of all the different elements that would be covered by their teachers in the course of

Chapter 3: Research Methodology
3.0 Overview
This chapter seeks to understand the different methods and methodologies that have been
applied in order to execute this research in an effective manner. In this regard, it is important to
understand that the data collected is analyzed with the aid of qualitative data analysis technique.
Furthermore, data has been gathered from the primary sources by conducting interviews with
certain chosen students and teachers. This has enabled the researcher to get a clear insight about
the research study under investigation.
3.1 Research Approach
The research approach that has been employed in the making of this research study is that
of qualitative data analysis technique. In this research approach, the researcher has attempted to
analyse the collected data in a subjective manner. Qualitative data analysis technique was chosen
instead of quantitative data analysis technique because the researcher was desirous of conducting
an in-depth research (Silverman 2016). In this regard, qualitative data analysis technique
provided him with the opportunity of analyzing all the different sources of data in a subjective
manner and to get a humanist view about the information so gathered.
The research has followed the primary data collection process whereby certain candidates
were chosen from the target population. The researcher wanted to analyse the view points of both
the students and the teachers and hence, both of the groups were interviewed. To choose the
respective candidates, the process of random non-probability sampling was utilized. This method
of sampling was resorted to by the researcher so that everyone from the target population had the
equal chance of being represented (Houghton et al. 2015). Students and teachers alike formed

part of this survey and equal number of candidates were interviewed in order to get a holistic
idea about the research study under investigation.
The data has been collected from various primary sources where a questionnaire has
been prepared. The questionnaire consisted of semi-structured interview questions to which the
chosen candidates had to answer to (Gaber and Gaber 2018). This questionnaire was then
circulated to the candidates who were chosen as a result of non-probability random sampling.
The chosen candidates were then asked to fill in the questionnaire so that their responses could
be recorded in a better manner. The data collected from them was then related to the information
gathered from the afferent secondary sources of literature in a qualitative manner.
3.2 Participants
The participants for this research proposal has been chosen from the categories of both
the students and the teachers. For the students, those belonging to the 12th grade and those who
have English as their additional subject, has been chosen. This has enabled the researcher to
understand the various problems the are facing as a result of learning this language (Willemse et
al. 2017). Moreover, for the teachers, those who are engaged in the teaching of the students who
have English as their addition language gas been chosen. The researcher has attempted to find
out the various problems and challenges faced by the people who are engaged in the following of
curriculum with respect to the teaching and learning of English as a second language (Deane and
Stanley 2015).
3.3 Research Design and Context
In the making of this research design, the descriptive research design has been adhered to.
Descriptive research design includes a combination of both the exploratory research design and

explanatory research design (Radulescu and Repovs 2015). Under exploratory research design,
the is an attempt to find out the different reasons and causes of a particular situation under
investigation. On the other hand, explanatory research design includes the explanation of the
occurrence of the particular situation. Descriptive research design on the other hand, includes the
features of both exploratory research design and explanatory research design (Glaser and Strauss
2017). This has aided the researcher to find out the various reasons for the development of
curriculum and in explaining its importance for the adherence for teaching the grade 12 students
who have English as a foreign language. In this regard, the curriculum for the Bridge to Success
Book has been analyzed in detail so that the researcher can understand in a better manner about
the alignment and need of curriculum.
3.4 Data Collection
There are two different ways in which data can be collected in the field of research study.
They are secondary data collection process and primary data collection process (Smith 2015).
Secondary data collection process includes the reading of various secondary sources of literature
such as that of books, academic articles and journals. This assist the researcher in finding out
about the various data that is relevant for the research study under investigation (Fisher 2017).
Primary source of data collection on the other hand refers to the conduction of interviews and
surveys in order to gather the relevant data (Morse 2015). This ensures the collection of data in a
first hand manner.
In the making of this research study, the researcher has engaged in the primary form of
data collection process. In this regard, the students who form part of the research study have been
given certain questionnaires which they were required to answer. Interviews were conducted for
the teachers so that their responses could be noted (Tseng et al. 2015). Such interviews and

questionnaire allowed the researcher to gain an effective analysis of the responses of the chosen
participants. Since the data was collected in a first hand manner, it ensured that no other source
consisted of such collected data from previously.
Furthermore, the atmosphere of the class room and the various methods of teaching in
such classrooms were also noted and observed by the researcher so that effective understanding
of the entire situation could be made. The observation of class rooms provided the researcher
with the effective understanding of how the teachers interact with the students. The level of
communication could be analyzed from such observations. Moreover, the understanding of the
class room techniques in the education of the children is also necessary as it is the effectiveness
of the techniques which guides the understanding of the students.
3.5 Research Limitation
One of the most important limitation of the research study is that the researcher did not
work in the school which was chosen to be the source of information. The school was located in
Al Ain while the researcher was living in Dubai. As a result of this, the researcher could not
effectively understand the behaviour of the teachers and the students and its changes for a period
of time. Another important limitation that was faced was that the researcher could not conduct
quantitative analysis of the data provided. As a consequence of this, the researcher found it quite
difficult to approach the data in an objective manner. This limited the scope of the research.
3.6 Ethical Consideration
For the effective and efficient execution of any research, it is important to understand the
various ethics which are involved in the work of this research. One of the most important ethical
consideration which should be adhered to in the process of primary data collection process is the

maintenance of anonymity (Harding 2018). The researcher should protect the identity of the
people who have formed part of the interview process and should take their consent before their
names are released in public. Another important ethical consideration is that of maintaining the
confidentiality of the data collected. The responses of the candidates are personal and they
should be protected by the researcher and not made public without the consent of such
participants.
3.7 Reliability, Validity and Feasibility of the Data
The data which has been collected is reliable as it has been collected by the researcher
himself. However, the validity of the data is considerably low as no other source of information
consist of sch data. The feasibility of the data is high as the data has been gathered from the
participants themselves who are most likely to be affected by this research study under
investigation.
3.8. Accessibility
The researcher had hard time collecting data. As the researcher is based in Dubai, while
the school is located in Al Ain it was not possible for the researcher to go to the school on a
regular basis. As a result of this, the researcher was unable to observe the changes in the
behavior of the students and the teachers and on the different techniques of teaching on all the
days. Furthermore, there was also the limitation of the budget that was provided. The teachers,
students and the school management were very cooperative, but obtaining the data was not easy,
as the timeline was short.
3.9 Summary
To summarize, this chapter provides an overview about the different ways in which the

Chapter 4: Data Findings and Analysis
4.0 Overview
This chapter aims to analyze all the data that has been previously collected in order to effectively
reach a conclusion. The aim of the research is to understand the effectiveness of curriculum and
implementation in the context of the grade 12 students who do not know this language and the
impact of this teaching curriculum on the teaching methods of the teachers. For this purpose, the
data has been collected from the teachers and the students themselves in order to understand their
perspective on the issue of curriculum development iand its implementation.
4.1 Data Findings
Three students and three teachers have been interviewed in order to find their responses.
For the students, those who belonged to grade 12 and has English as an additional subject, were
interviewed. The students were asked the question if they thought curriculum was an important
part of education. To this, two of the students responded that indeed curriculum was important. It
aided them to understand the various elements of the subject that would be covered in the course
of the work. Furthermore, the students could also get a comprehensive picture about the subject
and its importance in the course of life (Gonzalez et al. 2017). The students were asked if
English proved to be a difficult language to learn in their grade. To this all the respondents
replied that it was indeed quite difficult. In grade 12, they had to concentrate on their exams
which would determine their course of life and their college they attend to. In this level, it
becomes quite difficult to learn something new (Alvior 2015). However, English is important to
learn as it is the most commonly spoken language and since they had the desire to pursue their
higher studies abroad, English could come in significance during that point of time. This shows
that the subject of English is quite important for maintaining the basic communication skills

(Leask 2015). The students also believed that there is a clear linkage between curriculum
development and the effectiveness of teaching. They opined that curriculum enables the teachers
to have a proper frame work to which they can adhere to in order to understand what has to be
taught. For the easy learning of such information and knowledge, curriculum aids in to make the
process much simpler (Ramzan, Jalal and Amjad 2016).
Three teachers were interviewed in order to find a clear understanding of their teachings
method.In this it was found out that the teachers abide by the Bridge to Success Curriculum
Book which provides the course outline for the students who have English as an additional
language in their classes. This book is meant to give a guideline to the teachers so that they can
understand the needs and demands of the students and try to adhere to them in an efficient
manner. The basic objective of the teachers is that of imparting appropriate knowledge and
information to the students (Blyth 2017). They can only do this if they have a clear
understanding about the needs of the students and their ability to understand of what is being
taught to them (Rogers 2018). The researcher asked the teachers if they feel there is a linkage
between teaching and the development of curriculum. To this, all the three respondents replied
that there is a very close linkage. It is with the aid of curriculum that the teachers are able to
proceed with the course work. In a course of a year, the teachers are required to teach many
things to the students (Riccomini et al. 2015). This becomes very problematic if they do not have
a guideline on how to go about the topic and the lessons. In this regard, it is the factor of
curriculum which comes to the lime light. Curriculum aids the teachers in their teaching process.
Furthermore, it also enables the teachers to improve on their teaching methods and techniques as
the effective learning of the students is the prime requirement of any institution (Eris and
Kiliçoglu 2019).

4.2 Data Analysis
From the above data findings, it can be seen that the importance of curriculum is
paramount in the field of education. The aim of the research is to understand the effectiveness of
curriculum and implementation in the context of the grade 12 students who do not know this
language and the impact of this teaching curriculum on the teaching methods of the teachers. In
this regard, the researcher has analyzed the data provided by the respondents of the target
population, that is the students belonging to grade 12 and the teachers who are engaged in the
teaching of English to such students. In this context, it has been found out that the curriculum
provides a guide line to the teachers and the students alike to understand the course of their
education (Mesh 2016). The Bridge to Success Curriculum Book is a prime example of such a
development of curriculum. It guides the teacher to make the student learn through various
tactics. For instance, the book upholds the importance of learning about the English vocabulary,
the importance of oral speaking and the consequent development of oral skills and also, the
significance of writing skills. All these different methods as espoused in the book shows to the
teachers the various teaching techniques that can be adhered to for the effective teaching of the
students (Kondo-Brown and Brown 2017). Thus, this shows the importance of development of
curriculum. Curriculum aids in the generation of such mechanisms which provides the teachers
different mechanisms and methods to adhere to in order to teach to the students. Since the field
of language is quite difficult to understand, such methods have proven to be necessary and
effective in the process of learning (Tomlinson 2016).

To summarize, this chapter provides an over view of the data that has been gathered in
the course of the research.. The primary data that has been collected with the aid of questionnaire
and interviews have been related with the data examined in the literature review section. This has
proved to be important in trying to prove that the development of curriculum is indeed important
for the course of English as an additional language for the grade 12 students.

5.0 Conclusion
To conclude, it can be observed that the element of curriculum is quite significant for the
course of education. Curriculum is quite significant as it gives a proper frame work to the field of
teaching. Moreover, the teachers are able to realize what the different topics are which have been
covered and are left to cover. The students also get a all-embracing opinion about their course
composition with the help of this curriculum. The aim of the research is to understand the
effectiveness of curriculum and implementation in the context of the grade 12 students who do
not know this language and the impact of this teaching curriculum on the teaching methods of
the teachers. This has been proved in the course of the research work. It has been found that the
development of curriculum is quite important for the teaching methods of the teachers and also
to ensure the effective learning of the students.
5.1 Recommendation
It can be noted that the field of education is quite dynamic in nature. It is being constantly
upgraded and innovated so as to provide a clear frame work to the teachers and the students
alike. The imparting of knowledge becomes effective only when the students are able to utilize
this knowledge in the course of their life. In this regard, certain recommendations can be
provided to ensure the proper and effective development of the process of teaching and learning.
First, there is a need on the part of the teachers to adhere to the curriculum that has been
developed. It is the curriculum that ensures the effectiveness of the method of teachings and
hence, proper adherence to it would bring about the efficiency in the field of education. In this
manner, the teachers should follow the various methods of teachings that have been mentioned in

Second, the students should be attentive in the classes and should try to understand what

better manner and thus ensure that their desires are completely realised.
These recommendations would therefore improve the field of education to a significant
level so that the teachers are able to realize their primary objective to an effective level.
Furthermore, the students would be able to ensure a decent standard of living for themselves
which is the desire of every human being.
5.2 Future Scope of Research
This research would prove to be significant for all the other research that would be
conducted in this field.This research makes an in-depth analysis about the importance of
education and the development of curriculum. In this respect, the future research would be able
to draw information and data collected in this research for their own investigation.
