Report
AI Summary
This report provides a detailed analysis of distributed databases, highlighting their advantages such as enhanced data sharing, support for OLTP and OLAP, accommodation of distributed organizational units, modular development capabilities, increased reliability, and lower communication costs. It also addresses the disadvantages, including security concerns and reduced administrative control. The report concludes by suggesting that the benefits of using a distributed database often outweigh the drawbacks compared to traditional database management systems, making it a more efficient choice for many applications. Desklib offers a wealth of similar resources for students seeking to deepen their understanding of database systems.

2DISTRIBUTED DATABASE
Distributed database has been acting as a configured database that helps in storing data
that are loosely coupled in nature. The storage devices are attached to the same servers. This
connection of the servers increases the communication tenacity of servers. Distributed database
function as a single database despite the fact that there are more than one hardware in the
processing of the database.
Advantages of distributed database
Advantages of distributed database are as follows: -
Need of sharing data: need of sharing data has been acting as one of the major reason to
use distributed database over general database management. Distributed data base uses
synchronised manner of connectivity which increases the efficiency in communication if
the servers.
Supports OLTP and OLAP: Online Transaction Processing and Online Analytical
Processing is supported in distributed database. This ensures the fact that the distributed
database supports synchronized data management.
Distributed nature of organizational units: Organizations in today’s society is
diversified in many parts, hence need of using distributed data is very important.
Requirement of local data for each sector is very important, leading to the fact that data
privacy in each sector is maintained. Distributed database ensures the fact that the data
that are stored in distributed database is not only secured with a proper robust
infrastructure but also the connectivity of the data that are present in distributed database
is very high and efficient in nature.
Modular development: In case of expansion of the data from one location or computing
device to another in database management system, action that is required is substantial in

nature, which might cause disruption of data from the database. In case of distributed
database, connecting new devices with the present servers will be enough for expansion
of data.
Reliability: in case of failure in database management system, the entire project comes to
halt and no functioning is done. In case of distributed database, functioning of the
datacentre will never stop (Khatib and Atique, 2017). Performance of the entire project
might loses its efficiency, but complete stoppage of functioning will never occur. This
feature makes distributed database more reliable over database management systems.
Lower communication cost: the cost incurred in the processing of the data storing in
distributed database is very less compared to the database management system, as servers
are host to all the database in case of distributed database but in case of database
management, servers are set differentially, increasing the communication cost (Jalan, et
al 2016).
Disadvantages of Distributed database
Disadvantages of distributed database are as follows: -
Security issues: the major issue with the usage of distributed database is that robustness
of the infrastructure is very low (Faleiro and Abadi, 2015). This ensures the fact that
imposters can get access to the data that are present in distributed database. Lesser admin control: control over the entire project is low. This causes the fact that
prioritising of admin control is not of much help. Project management is not very
efficient in distributed database.

4DISTRIBUTED DATABASE
Taking into consideration the advantages and disadvantage of distributed database, it seems
beneficial to use distributed database over database management system. Database management
system ensures the fact that usage of distributed database is much more efficient in compared to
database management system (Cellary, Morzy and Gelenbe, 2014).
