better employment prospects. The employers will
count their international experience. Employers
believe that as the students adapt new cultural
skills from the foreign environment, it makes
them self dependent, flexible, adventurous and
decision maker (Forbes.com 2015). Their newly
developed cross cultural skills, global networking
and global awareness add to the employer’s
benefit (Picardo 2012).
Malaysian parents act most receptively in
sending their children overseas for higher studies
(Kopenski 2015). 88% of them want their
children to pursue graduate or post graduate
degrees from a foreign university and 92 %
believe that it is absolutely necessary for their
children’s successful career in the future
(Hsbc.com 2016). The students’ dream of
studying in foreign universities is also assisted by

What concerned you about her studying the
USA?
Honestly I was worried about the cost, as it is
not just the university fees but also other
additional costs seemed to be huge. Then we
came to know about an institution in Kuala
Lumpur which helped us with the financial part.
The university she is studying also helps a lot.
How do you think her studying abroad is going to
help her career?
Firstly she gets to know a different culture which
will broaden her thoughts and perspective (Soria
and Troisi 2014). She gets the opportunity to
meet not only local American students but also
other international students from Japan, Germany
or India. There she becomes an active participant
of culture and knowledge exchange (Doerr 2013).

What would you advise other parents who want
to send their children abroad?
Do encourage him or her continuously. It is going
to be a life changing experience for them so be as
much supportive as possible. Find out a good
counselor who will guide you and your children
in the right directions.
Do communicate with your children always.

a better and happy human being and as parents
we just want that.
