IntroductionThe topic that will be investigated for this project is, "Does Prison SolitaryConfinement Effect a Persons Mental Health". This will explore whichfactors contribute to mental health within the prisons and if there is a correlationin solitary confinement playing a part in the deteriorating of mental health. Thiswill be exploring what solitary confinement is, the reasons why it isimplemented and what the benefits of practicing it within prisons by comparingnegative consequences it can have on prisoners themselves. It will then exploreall the methods available to prisoners to cut down the risk of mental health,what healthcare is available for prisoners and what and considering whatprevention strategies are available. Throughout this project, theories whichprovide evidence, case studies, professional opinions, and statistics tounderstand the implications it can have overall on prisoners themselves.Aims and LimitationsThe aim of this project it to explore what, if any, factors contribute to mentalillness, if there is a direct link to solitary confinement and how this can beprevented. When exploring the factors which influence mental illness withinprison, it is important to look at what else might affect it. For example, gangculture can have a huge impact individual’s midst, as they develop violent traitsto "survive" prison; as these factors can have a serious influence on theprisoners, which can lead to mental illness.
