Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1Background of the research
In the words of Fenton and Mott (2017), the women violence is something that have been
increased considerably in the contemporary times, Even residing in the 21st century the social
evils of this sort still find their existence in the society. The reports that have been collected in
this sector clearly points out that these things have been increasing greatly with the passage of
time. The violence has currently taken the form of domestic violence where the women turn out
to be the direct victims within the household in which they are residing. The particular reasons
that have contributed towards the development of these kinds of practices are still under
research. There are a number of theories that have tried in analysing the reasons in their own
way- but most of them are hypothetical. The main agenda of the research is to acess the current
state of the women violence and also determine the different factors that have contributed to
the development of this type of activities.
1.2Aims and objectives
Aim of the research
The main aim of the particular research project is to have comprehensive idea as to what the
domestic violence actually means and how the younger women in particular of UK are are
affected by these factors.
Objectives
The main objectives of the research is
To determine the current status of the domestic violence in UK
To identify the direct victims of these kind of activities
To analyse the different factors that have contributed to these type of activities
To determine the various steps that can put a stop of these type of social evils

1.3. Research questions
The different research questions that may prove to be useful in this regard are:
What is the current status of domestic violence in UK?
What are the different factors that give rise to situations of this type?
What are the different activities that can be adopted by the victims to get rid of the activities of
this kind?
1.4. Research Rationale
In the contemporary times, the issues like women violence have increased to a great extent. If the
reports are to be believed then the issues of this type have increased to a great extent. There are
indeed a number of factors that have contributed to these factors and if such unfortunate events
factors are not controlled, then the activities of this type may go on increasing (Sanghera and
Thapar (2017).
There are of course a number of factors that have contributed to the activities of this kind. In a
century where the human have laid their footsteps in moon the practices of these kind still
continues and that too in case of a modern country like UK. In the era where the women
empowerment have turned out to be one of the “hot cakes” of the town, there are areas where
the practices like this are still continues and are practised extensively (Walklate and Fitz ,2018).
.
It is however a tough decision to make as to why these type of factors is still in practice in the
contemporary times. There are ample debates about the topic as to what are the factors that
instigates the feelings of torturing an individual (women to be specific) both emotionally as well
as physically. Some of the researchers point out that in most of the cases, individuals belonging
from unstable family backgrounds turn out to be the host of this kind of thinking. However,
there are no specific reasons that have been identified so far (Potter and Feder, 2017).

Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.0. Women violence
As opined by Fenton and Mott (2017 the term women violence identifies the ways of torturing
women either mentally or physically or both or even a combination of both. In most of the cases
women from all over the world are subjected to mishandlings of this type. The researches that
are carried out in this regard points out that gender based violence is more in case of women as
compared to the male citizens. The recent investigations that have been carried out in this regard
points out that 3 out of every 5 women are subjected to violence of some kinds and in most of the
cases 10% of the total victims actually complain against the cases thus passively promoting
women violence (Potter and Feder, 2017). However in the contemporary times, it has been
accessed that the younger woman of UK are greatly subjected to abuses of these kinds.
One of the shocking facts that have been unveiled is that these types of practices are present
extensively in advanced countries like UK. In the words of Wistow et al.,(2017), previously the
researchers were under the belief that the practices of these kinds are present extensively in the
developing countries. The researchers were really shocked when the reports of UK (one of the
advanced countries of the contemporary times) showed a steep increase in the overall graph of
women violence and that too on the younger women showed a steep growth.
2.1 The factors that are contributing to these kinds of practices
There are indeed a number of factors that have contributed towards the increasing graph towards
practices of this type. Most of the concepts are drawn from the psychological theories ad these
are
Culture- It is a word of shame to confess that in most of the cases torturing the women are
considered as a symbol of masculinity. In the words of Potter and Fedder (2017), these are
particularly achieved n case of the feudal or the conservative societies where the women have no
right to take any of the decisions. In the modern era also there are also a number of houses where
the practices of these types are being carried out extensively and the women are subjected to
extensive physical as well as mental violence.
5
Document Page
Family background- In most of the cases, it has been identified that the individuals from the
disrupted family backgrounds often develop a sense of hatred and intolerance towards women
and these turn out one of the major drivers for these individuals to tolerate the female gender in
all ways possible. According to Walby et al.,(2017) these are the individuals consider torturing
the women as the only way of taking revenge. In most of the cases the younger women turn out
to the direct victims of these practices. The younger women in most of the cases are ignorant
about these types of practices and these make them an easy prey in the whole process.
2.2. Steps that can be adopted to reduce domestic violence
However, time has come to put a stop to the evil practices to a great extent. Though there are
number of steps that are adopted by the local government in accordance with the local
government and the NGOs but most of them have failed to provide the expected results owing to
the lack of awareness among the women of the society. Sanghera and Thapar (2017),have
underpinned that the laws and the regulations are needed for the women and in most cases the
women themselves are not much aware about these rules. The assaulters take the advantage of
the lack of knowledge in the women and hence utilise the chances to assault and torture them in
all ways possible.
As put forward by Fitz et al.(2017), since the laws are made for the women of the society,
hence the women should always have equal rights to get an effective idea about the rights and
the regulations that they are subjected to. Since the young women are the individuals who are
the direct victims of these types of activities, hence the respective schools and the colleges
should adopt proper sessions of educating the women about the basic rights and figures.
The younger woman of the society should take a proper training on self defence. This will help
the individuals to protect themselves from these activities and the women also need to stand in
support of each other against all types of activities of these type that are occurring in their
surroundings.
Above all the women (younger or older) need to understand that none of the individuals have the
rights to torture them under any of the circumstances whatever is the reasons be. In accordance
with Walklate and Fitz (2018), if the women don’t respect themselves or are not able to stand
in their own support- no outsider is going to do that for them.

2.4. Literature gap
Though extensive research work has been carried out in the above sections, but there are still
some of the gaps in literature that have been identified in the entire process. Though it has been
estimated that the domestic violence (women violence) have increased greatly in the
contemporary times, but the percentage of increase have not been identified. Moreover, it has
been identified that the younger woman of the society are the direct victims of these practices,
but the section of the society who are the victims have not been accessed in the sections.
Evaluating previous researches has helped in developing a background on the research agenda. It
has also been accessed that women do not prefer raising voice against these types of practices,
but the exact reasons behind these have not been accessed in the sections. However, it lacks
practical insight, which is gained with the help of this research

Chapter 3: Research Methodology
The research methodology is an important section of the research methodology as it provides a
clear overview as to the different steps that need to be adopted by the researcher to ensure that
the research is going on in the right direction. The different aspects that are considered in the
research methodology are the research philosophy, research strategy, research approach,
sampling techniques, data collection and the data analysis sections. As introduced by Denzin
(2017), all of them are equally important for conducting the whole of the research process
effectively. The research approach identifies the process through which the overall process can
be approached. The research approaches that are in practice are broadly of two types and these
are the inductive and the deductive approach As the deductive approach allows the researcher to
use the existing theories and models, hence it has been selected for the particular research. The
research philosophy helps in identifying the ways through which the overall data collection and
the interpretation process can be carried out. As part of the research philosophy the positivism
have been chosen and selected for this particular research process.
The sample size indicates the exact number of individuals who will be enquired to get a realistic
image of the chosen research topic. For this particular research, a sample size of 3 has been
selected. The participants will be selected through random sampling techniques and are mainly
the victims of these types of evil practices that are occurring in society. As part of the data
collection processes Focus Group Discussions and Individual in-depth interviews have been
considered.
Ethical considerations
The ethical considerations are some of the vital factors of concern of the entire research process.
The researcher indeed has to follow certain ethical considerations for the entire process. It has
been assured that the Data protection Act, (1998) will be followed and instigated for ensuring
that none of the data that are collected will be used for any other commercial purpose and if it is
used then the permissions will be taken from the participants. The Equality Act of 2010 will also
be followed and none of the individuals will be judged on the basis of racism, skin colour or any
other factors. It is also further ensured that none of the participants will be forced to take part in
8

the process and the participation of the candidates is always in accordance with their will
(Bulmer, 2017).
Chapter 4: Data Collection and Analysis
The data collection and the analysis is one of the major sections that provides a clear practical
representation of all the data and the facts that have been discussed in the above sections
1. What according to you are the factors that have contributed to the overall increase of
these types of practices?
Response 1: There are indeed a number of factors that have contributed to the continuation
of practices of this kind. The first response pointed out that she was a victim of such
situations because her husband had a bad and abusive childhood. Her husband was under the
interpretation that all of the women are of the same type after his mother cheated his father
and hence considered torturing his wife as the only means of taking revenge.
Response 2: The second response however pointed out towards the presence or a feudal or a
conservative background in her house. The 2nd response pointed out that in most of the cases
the victims of such situations belong to a family background that restricts the women in each
and everything and this is one of the major reasons of her being a victim of mental torture
throughout her childhood.
Response 3: The third respondent also agreed with the first respondent. The third respondent
also pointed out that the family reasons are some of the major reasons in this regard.
2. Do you think that there are indeed any government rules and regulations that are
present to stop these type of practices and even if they are present are they effective
enough in providing the necessaries?
Response 1: There are indeed government laws and regulations that are developed for restricting
activities of this kind. But these are not effective in most of the cases. The respondent also added
that these organisations have a limited existence in the society.
Response 2: The second response however pointed out that in most of the cases, the women are
not even aware about the presence of these type of regulatory bodies in the society. The lack of
9
Document Page
awareness restricts the individuals from taking any of the step in support of the women right and
hence the incidents of these types continues,
Response 3: The third response also pointed out towards the ineffectiveness of the regulatory
bodies that are present in the society. The respondent further added that there are a number of
steps where the victim has even lodged a complaint but the ineffectiveness of the concerned
body lead to the death of the victim.
Chapter 5: Conclusions and Recommendations
The above section has proved to be effective enough in providing a clear overview of the exact
status of women violence in the contemporary times. It has been estimated that even in some of
the advanced countries like UK, the scenario of women violence is worst. The report has pointed
out that 3 out of every 10 women are the direct victims of the domestic violence in all forms. It
has also been accessed that in most of the cases the individuals does not prefer lodging a proper
complaint against these type of activities sometimes owing to inefficient knowledge and again
sometimes due to family pressure.
Recommendations
It is recommendable for the schools and the other organisations to pertain proper training
regarding the basic rights of the women in the society.
The younger woman should also indulge in learning defence arts and should be strong enough to
stand against any of the social ill activities that are occurring in the society.
