Abstract
The consumption of alcohol and drugs or the combination of the two substances may lead to
dangerous interactions, health, and physical as well as behavioral complications. The
consumption of illicit drugs like heroin, ecstasy, cocaine and marijuana may result in causation
of bodily injury and similar life-threatening side effects. Substance abuse includes the chronic
use of drugs and alcohol and any person who is subjected to prolonged consumption of alcohol
and drugs enhances the tolerance of the person consuming, thereby requiring more of the
substance in order to achieve the same desirable outcome. Initially alcohol and substance abuse
may be seen as a minor problem but eventually it turns out to be a significant concern, giving
rise to other health related problems. Drug use in the United Kingdom seems to have been
widely stabilized since millennium with fluctuations in the rate of substance use though; the rate
has mostly been high majority of the times especially in terms of using crack and cocaine. The
United Kingdom is said to have the highest level of dependent drug use and is also known for the
highest level of recreational drug use in Europe. The situation worsened over the last quarter of
the twentieth century when there was an incline in the number of dependent heroin users in
Scotland and England. The principal cause of the drug problems in Britain cannot be said to be
occasional drug use but dependence of people on Class a drugs such as cocaine and heroin.
Alcohol drinking is an integral part of social, family and occupational life for several
people in the United Kingdom. The rationale of this research is to identify the prevalent causes
that are attributing to the substance abuse in the United Kingdom. The availability of the drugs
and their easy accessibility is the most significant reason for the teenagers and youths to be
engaged in drug and alcohol abuse, in particular.
