Understanding Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

This article provides an overview of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), a network management protocol that assigns IP addresses and other related information to devices on a network. INTRODUCTION
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is refers to a server or client protocol which is
mechanically provided an internet Protocol host with its IP address and many other related
configuration information including default gateway and sub net mask (Hicks, 2022). It work at
application layer to a dynamically assign the IP address to clients and it happen through an
exchange of a series of the message known as DHCP transaction. This report will be based on an
article related to DHCP that include ts function, importance and so on.
MAIN BODY
In this modern hyper connected IT atmosphere, the admins need to ensure that their all
devices are configured appropriately and connected within a network. The IP addresses are
manually assigned to every device is prone to the errors. It is where the Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol comes into play. The DHCP is that network management protocol in
which server assign the IP address and other related information to all device on network from an
effective communication. DHCP reduce chances of the common errors that are occurring while IP
addresses assigned manually. This system play vital role when managing all the small network
where the mobile devices are being used and there is requirement for the IP address that allow the
mobile device for moving freely from network to network (Hitchcock, 2022). Further DHCP aid
to reduce typographical errors that are arising when the IP address configuration parameters not
properly defined. Since, every device have unique IP address as duplicate addresses may create
conflicts if devices are not able to connect with network. IP address information which is assigned
by the DHCP is valid for only a limited time period which is called a DHCP lease. When this lease
get expire, then clients can not uses this IP address and they have to stop all the communication
with IP network unless they request for extending the lease rent via DHCP lease renewal cycle.
There are four mainly four DHCP usage scenarios:
 The initial client connection- Client request from DHCP server the IP address and the
other parameter values to access network services.
 IP Usage Extension- Client contacts the DHCP server in order to extend the usage of
their current IP address.

 Client Connection After Reboot- Client contacts the DHCP server to confirm that they
can use same IP address being utilized before reboot.
 Client Disconnection- Client request the DHCP server in order to release their IP address
(Robalino Alcívar, 2022).
The most comprehensive and original implementation of DHCP services are offered by Internet
System Consortium.
CONCLUSION
Form the above report it is concluded that even though DHCP now is consider as integral
part of internet and established protocol within the network management. DHCP provide the
network resources to the mobile hosts including notebook computer. In current DHCP protocol,
the security is not considered. When clients configures the network resources including IP
address, every clients can use the network. DHCP lets the network administrators centrally carry
off a pool of the IP addresses among the host and automate an assignment of the IP address in
network efficiently.
